Okay, I've been pricing the XT. Here is the BEST/HOTTEST deal there is for preorders (No credit card application required on this one! )
Amazon is offering a $50-$100 off Coupon on your next $500-$1000 shopping cart purchase (Check restrictions. PreOrders qulify).
You'll need to break the $1000 mark to qulify for the $100 coupon. So buy your favorite accessory (Ill get a monopod). Minus your http://a9.com 1.57% discount!
This effectivly gives you $100 coupon to put towards a nice zoom lense. such as the Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II $399 $100 Promotional certificate -$100 Total==========================================$299
It's a Canon Digital Rebel XT + $100 worth of stuff you may or may not want for $999.
There's no way to give Amazon.com $899 and have them give you a Canon Digital Rebel XT.

SoMoney said: Also found the 350D (Body Only) $819.95 at 47st Photo but Ive never ordered from them before..
First this is a repost from an earlier thread on AmazonLink
Also there are much better deals on the 300D than 47st foto. That price is only $80 off of list price. One Call has it for $650 body only and Circuit City has the kit for $709 AR. Costco is offering the kit for $769 and free shipping.
I already preordered the Rebel XT. Best deal is to combine the purchase with the Amazon CC and a9.com. I plan on selling the kit lens as I already own the 17-40L. Here is the breakdown:
Rebel Xt $999.99 Duracell MN2400B2 AAA, (2-Pack) $1.29 total $1001.28 Amazon Credit Card -30.00 a9 discount -15.25 grand total $956.03 Future Amazon gift certificates -$125.00 (extra $25 comes from spending over $834 on Amazon CC) net $834.03 sell kit lens ~ -$80 total cost $754.03
I sold my 300d on eBay for that exact amount! Now I just need to wait a month or so for my XT to arrive.

Well BestBuy appears to be the first retailer to have the 350D which is pretty much the same as when the 300D came out. Unfortunately they only carry the silver body.
No deals to be had from BestBuy on this aside from their 10% off coupons they send out from time to time. One of the BestBuy's in my area carry it so I'll be taking it through the paces later today. I'm really interested to see how it feels with my 17-40 lens attached since it is so much lighter.

Your bestbuy already has it? I didn't think it was shipping for another couple weeks. I've been debating if I should pre-order it from Amazon or not. I did that w/ the Fuji S5000 a few years back and just a couple months later the price had dropped quite a bit. I think the Amazon deal is pretty decent though and there is enough hype on this camera to keep the price up for a while. What do you think?

Only one of the BestBuy's in my area had it. The person I spoke to didn't have it out yet, but would take it out if asked. The other Best Buy's didn't have a clue that a new one was coming out (not surprised).
I think the Amazon deal is really good. The best deals when the 300D came out were from Dell, but I missed that one by a few days and ended up getting mine from Best Buy with the 10% coupon. Lately those coupons seem to exclude Digital SLR's, but I did get one that did not a little bit ago. I was debating getting the 20D with it, but decided to hold off.

Just got back from BestBuy and playing with the XT. Wow is it small. I also don't like the way the menus work as much as on the 300D. The main screen now displays the options for chaning ISO, WB, etc. I can't believe how light it felt. I took some 1600 ISO images and they appeared noise free. I'll look at them later on my computer in more detail. I was able to shoot 15 pictures in succession in Large JPG before it's buffer was full. Only 4 RAW pictures with Large JPG though.
As for the size, my pinky had to curl under the bottom of the camera. Also, my index finger didn't naturally rest on the trigger. I would have played with their 20D, but it was broken. Anyone know of any great deals on the 20D? I may sell my 28-135 IS to make the jump.
Update1:
Just checked for the best price on a 20D. Anyone know of a better deal than this from amzaon?
20D body only $1399.94 a9 discount -21.94 first time Amazon CC -30.00 order total $1348.00 future Amazon GC -125.00 total after GC $1223.00
Update2: I cancelled the XT order and placed an order for the 20D with Amazon. After talking to CSR I found that the $30 promotion is reapplied on the next order with the CC. Now its time to eBay my 28-135 IS lens. If anyone is interested in it PM me. It will come with the lens hood which is sold separately.

How would you compare the XT to the Drebel as far as PQ? I am considering either the 20D or the XT to replace my Drebel.
EDIT: Never mind, I thought you already bought the XT.

There are a bunch of samples being posted to dpreview. Definitely there is an improvement in quality at the higher ISO's. No 3200 ISO until maybe a future hack will enable it for the XT. I personally did not like the smaller feel of the body where the 20D is definitely more solid and a lot heavier.

B&H Photo just got in the Canon Rebel XT ( 350D ) for $999 They do price match so if you can find a quote anyplace else you might get a deal.
No worries on the Amazon shipping quote... Amazon always quotes worst case shipping time. I've always received my shipments days to weeks before the estimated time of shipent passed.
Still waiting for the a9 discount to show up. Noted that the ship date is now Nov 11!!! Must be a mistake.
Has anyone tried using gift cards to purchase this? There's a thread on 20% off gift cards. But don't think you can get $1000 worth, just $500. If one can use gift cards at 20% off and get the $100 gift cert... price would be $700 for the kit!

That's gotta be a typo. I'm thinking even though mine says late April, I'll see it late March or Early April. Seeing that other guys have them, like BB, B&H, etc, I figure Amazon can order a boat load
Amazon deal doesn't look good, I do not shop at Amazon, so $100 GC is useless for me. Anyway, bad feedback for this camera (people like 20d much more) makes me think that Canon will issue rebates pretty soon.

Looks like he liked everything but the size...I am looking forward to the smaller size personally... On dpreview I have read nothing but praises...I'd rather save the $400 and get some decent glass...I don't need/use all the 20D functions anyway...

actually, the size matters. the camera feels really small. not much room for your hand, when you grip it. seems to be really hard to grip if you put a heavy lens on it.
and for those of you with fry's electronics nearby-they have it too. and have had it (not sure if best buy is first, but i do know fry's isn't nationwide)

I agree. $400 can get you a pretty good lens, which is goign to help you take better pics than a 20D with the 18-55 lens.

If you are buying the 20d, you will also buy a better lense... You are only saving 266.00 bucks cause you can't factor in a gift certificate when you paid 999.00 for the camera.. You could of bought the 20d from Dell for 1265 with the kit lense.. So it is not 400.00 dollars saved.. I don't know how you can factor in a 100.00 certificate as buying it for 899.00?????????? That 100.00 certificate is only good on your next purchase and not on this one... So the 999 price is what you are paying... the math is 1265-999 = 266 plus you get a lousy 100.00 certificate at Amazon which in fact you will end up spending more for something else..

I doubt we will see any rebates on the XT for a while. Canon didn't offer any for the Rebel for well over a year after it had been released. We'll see if the current inventory will meet with demands.
Both the XT and the 20D are excellent cameras. I just did not like the feel of the XT personally but as far as operation wise and features it was great.
The more I am shooting with my 20D the more I like it. The fit is perfect and the grip is really nice. It has some time of tacky rubber that just molds to your hand. The only feature I dislike is that the ISO speed is not displayed unless you press the ISO button. I frequently change the ISO and would like to know what it is without having to press the button.
I just started playing around with shooting in RAW. I highly recommend shooting in this way. I've had many pictures ruined by having the image overexposed and in jpg there is not that much that can be done with blown highlights. IN raw, you just slide the exposure control and BAM you've got your details back. I way overexposed an image on purpose by setting the FEC (flash exposure compensation) up to +2 and was able to get a very nice picture after sliding the exposure control down.
Good luck in your choice no matter which camera you choose.

huh?
You can get the 350D body for $899 plus $14.xx from a9.. So it is $380. $380 plus $100 GC means $480 for a lens in the future.
EDIT: Ordered my 350D. Estimated arrival date is March 26-29.

Well it showed up on Wednesday. When I called about my XT before I canceled I was asking when it would ship the CSR also changed it to next day for free. Can't complain about Amazon customer support.

That is weird. I've used it for about a couple of weeks. Even though I did not really need to use this engine. I tried to get the discount for the Canon 350D. Till today, it is still not active. Regardless I called a CSR last week trying to make it active manually.

The Canon XT uses the Canon EF and the Canon EF-S count. The EF is the same as all the Canon EOS cameras. The EF-S count is only supported on the Canon Digital Rebel, 20D, and the XT. . One of the most important factors in getting great pictures is the quality of the lenses. There may be adaptors for the Pentax lenses to an EF mount, but you would have to check on that.

Why don't you try Pentax *ist Ds (for less than 700$ camera body) ? Your old pentax lens should be ready to go without any problem.

20d came out around September 2004. Rebel XT just came out in the past few months. If there's a 30d or the like coming out in September 2005, I'd personally wait for that... but I've been unable to find anything about future releases.
