If you want to become educated about diamond (and colored stone) buying I highly recommend the forums and FAQS at www.pricescope.com they discuss important issue such as the importance of the correct angles of the cut being maintained, that go beyond the 4 c's mentality of your average buying guide. they also recommend reputable online resellers of unset stones (the only way to fly). The material is somewhat involved and technical but hey, you're dropping big money, right? Highhly recommended reading is the "diamond tutorial" Faq on the front page. EDIT: should have read the thread better and typed faster *repost* of old material. Curses. |

I would like to see someone actually PAY you that $20K... Diamonds are a horrible investment - just try selling one and you will see. Most people purchasing diamonds stay away from private sales, and the dealers won't give you more than maybe 20-30% of the "value", since they can buy that $20K diamond for $5K or less.

I agree. I always feel pixxed when I look at my insurance policy, knowing that I can get the same diamond a heck of a lot cheaper from my friend who is a Belgian Diamond dealer than what they put down as the value. I think diamond "appraised values" are just one big insurance scam. |

I guess I must be an idiot. I always thought champagne colored diamonds were much prettier than the clear one.

Don't waste your time with this deal- same deal was posted last year from Boscov's for the 1 Carat for like $399 or so - I bought it - it went back to the local store the same day I received it - horrible quality - Huge Inclusions & very bad color. - You will be dissapointed with it - it is not a Price mistake.

With respect to quality, I called and it is at least SI. Not bad at all for this price. I didn't get any more info (about cut, etc).

This thread is not going anywhere as it's no deal at all. So where is a good place to get a diamond? I haven't bought my wife a dianmond ring when we got married a few years ago. Back then, I have just graduated and was too poor. Now that I have my house, my son , my job, it's more stable, I would like to buy her a diamond. Where is a good place to get me start looking? |

daffydk said:Ok its one thing to to argue about "good" expensive diamonds vs cheap inexpensive diamonds.
But lets face it, its pure dumbness to pay thousands for a ROCK (even if it is really the good type diamond). I wouldnt want a girl who just 'feels' happy by wearing a $5000 - $10,000 rock; or her respect and attitude is somehow measured by how much I spend on a rock for her. I would rather use that as a down payment for a house.
People used to buy diamonds and Gold becuase that was the only way to preserve currency (they didnt have paper bills). Although paper currency can also be generated (like diamonds) hence depreciation or inflation...therefore, It is stil a good idea to buy gold becaues gold is limited in the world and no one can make gold in a laboratory (it has to be made in star supernova). I read that the whole earths gold can be gathered up and it would be the size of a football stadium.
Anyway, buy her something ok ($1000 or less) and if she is not happy. then find someone who will be happy. There is plenty of fish in the sea and some are smart enough to know there is better things to spend your hard earned money than on Rocks!
I take it you would rather like to give a FW h/w deal or so to your wife on your engagement/wedding? Good Luck

3 years back,I bought Tiffany ring VVS1 for my wife and I would do it all over again. I don't know much of diamonds but It looks beautiful on her finger and that is priceless! It's one thing to get a cheap electronics and another to buy a quality stuff.Quality does matter.
I know one day she will pass it on to my daughter and I think it is simply beautiful!

Brings new meaning to the word "Flatwallet"
Well, my personal circumstances at the time let me afford it pretty easily--no kids, a big sign-on bonus, no mortgage payment, no car payment. Now, ten years later, with student loan payments ending, but with 3 kids and a pretty big mortgage, I would probably be able to do it again with not much problem. But, it would have really been difficult in the intervening years.
It's not really just about the diamond you know. It's about personal circumstances, your relationship and understanding with the girl and where your values are. I could have afforded more at the time, but we both felt comfortable for various reasons at what we chose.
We still marvel at it and enjoy the memories behind it and thinking about how far we've come in that time. That's worth something as well.
Well said! Me and my wife think about time and memories and yes it is priceless.I overstreched my budget then and I am proud of it.My wife will not trade it for anything in the world even when I offered her to buy a bigger diamond

Being a recent wife who recently got an engagment ring, I just want to let you guys who DON'T have tons of money to spend:
If the girl the right one for you, it doesn't matter that much.
I mean, get her something, but if she knows your circumstances, she should not be expecting the Hope diamond. My brother-in-law had to have his parents help him get (pay) for his fiancee's ring, and she complained to him about how it wasn't "perfect." Her sister said "Oh, well my ring is going to have two diamonds like your center stone on each side of my center stone." She was a materialistic harpy from a family of materialistic harpies. Guess what, they divorced a year later.
I'm not telling you about my ring, but let's just say that it better than this champange one and not as great as some of the others mentioned here. But I love it because it's the ring he proposed to me with, and because I love him. The ring is just a pretty rock, it's the marriage that counts. |

With a Tiffany label, the cost will be at least double on what it is worth. |
