The 2nd post of this thread clearly indicates to order "SBC/yahoo DSL - Express Package - Modem Take-Out Kit". You (and others who are to do this) should bear in mind before making the store trip. If the clerk selected different one, you would know it was wrong. If you cannot find the modem, in store, you should also have known you should not do it (this is widely discussed here that no modem, no deal).
But I still think you might get the deal better than simply subscribe via the sbcglobalnet |

I just talked to some stoner dude at best buy rebate center about the two $75 rebates with the same promotion number but with different skus..
His suggestion was, "like dude what i would do, honestly, is like if you have a different address, then you should like send them to different addresses, but like if don't then like you might talk to the store, but basically i don't know, man."
I don't think i'll take him up on his offer, I'd rather get one rebate than lose them both for trying to commit fraud.
But I guess I'll just follow the instructions exactly and submit them both and see what happens. I expect I'll get one rebate check and one postcard telling me I wasn't eligible for the other one, which will be ok.

What is the difference between just the Express package and Express Package with Modem Take-Out Kit. I went to my local BestBuy store yesterday and he said I don't have to do anything for the Express Package option except sign up. He said I would receive a self installing kit from SBC and that's what the $12.95 s/h charge was for. Is that true ? Do I need the Modem Take-Out Kit ? I'm not very good at this stuff so any help will be appreciated. Also, on another thread I read about SBC offering 3 months of free service after MIR if switched from cable. Can I combine the two offers ?
Thanks so much. |

For what it's worth...My BB was also sold out of the modems. But the guy told me that if I didn't want to wait a week or possibly 2(my new service starts in 4 days) that I could order the modem online and still apply the rebates. I still don't know if I'm going to do it...but the modem he told me to get was modem #5531917
HERE IT IS
Good luck! |

I think that ordering the modem from store to ship to your home should also work. You may not get all the rebates form printed out like one guy has written that he didn't got the $15 rebate printed out. Still it is better than missing the complete deal since stores are OOS... |

sorry if this has been answered already. I've read the whole thread but I don't recall seeing this come up..
If I want to purchase the modem from BB now, to ensure availability, but I don't want to have DSL activated for another 2-3 weeks or so.. do I have any control over that?
I've got Earthlink dial-up that I need to transition out of, so I need a little time for that (deleting/archiving emails as I won't have that email addy anymore, saving favorite websites info, finishing off the remaining days or weeks of service from this current months billing cycle, etc.)
I've had Earthlink dial-up for the past 5 years, which has been my one and only IP and email account, so this is all new to me.
thanks. |

When u sign up they give you an activation date. In my case it took 7 days. The salesperson at the store said it would only take 48 hours to activate.

To answer the question of whether you can delay activation--yes, you can specify what date you want service activated. Up to ~1 month in the future.
BTW, I ordered the service instore but had my modem mailed to me because the clerk said I would be charged $99 on my first month's bill with an immediate $99 credit on the same bill. I also received a $75 gc form as well as a $75 rebate form and the $20 image card form. Considering I'm supposed to get the modem free (minus $13 shipping) I'm wondering whether I can or should submit the extra $75 modem rebate. |

I signed up at the westwood store in L. A. But not without a couple of problems, first the SBC web site would not let me complete the sign up without putting in my customer code number off my SBC phone bill so I had to come back on Firday with my phone bill, then after I left the store and I got back to my car I decided to check to see if I had everything but I was missing the $15 modem rebate. so I go back into the store find the sales person then he took me up to customer service where the CSR tried to convince me the $20 Image Lab card was the other modem rebate, there was no way I was going to fall for that BS so after me and the sales person spend 20 minutes arguing with the CSR the sales person brought up the modem price tag from the shelf, which clearly said FREE after rebate, the CSR scanned the tag and was able to bring up and print the $15 modem rebate.
So bring your phone bill with you and make sure you have all 4 rebates before you leave the store. |

I could have used my bank bill pay account also for finding the three digit identification number. Anyway, I have updated the quick summary for this problem... |

I only got 4 rebate forms. I believe they removed either item 4 or item 5 from the system. Or maybe I was just out of luck.
It may just means you're lucky, saving stamp and time to try the "not-going-to-get-passed-duplicated" rebate |

Just did the deal at BB. DSL will be activated in 1 week. Thanks OP.
I have 2 questions: 1) How much is the actual monthly cost once SBC fees, taxes, etc are added to the $14.95 cost? 2) Should I use the SBC Yahoo software, or install the modem and just access without it?
I have read that many FWers are by-passing the SBC Yahoo installation software. What is the major advantage/disadvantage of this?
Thanks in advance for the advice! |

Hi! I ordered SBC Yahoo DSL from Bestbuy last week and my service was activated today. Everything is great except one problem. I ordered the express package modem take out kit, so i paid for the modem in the store. Then today, i get a package from SBC Yahoo and i think that it is a self-installation kit, but i'm not sure because i didn't open the box. I don't want to be charged for the package. I was wondering if anyone else received a package from SBC after getting the modem take out kit instore from Bestbuy. THanks for any replies!! |

What do you mean "isn't active?" you get the info from SBC.com/orderstatus or just because you did not get their phone call? Once SBC set your phoneline for DSL (beginning from the activation date), you -- YOU need to regsiter to SBC (either via running the enclosed CD or via the tricks-without-using-cd" from your phone using the modem, to select your SBC ID to activate your service.
find the info on your self instllation package, written very clearly (on how to use CD to do it). or google how to do it manually, bunch of websites for instructions |

Did you get confirmation mail from SBC, I got one which lists the modem kit as not included (or perhaps not applicable).
I did not get the modem (again, but who knows what's to happen)
-- updated -- My SBC online order status (clicking from here), not from www.SBC.com/orderstatus, clearly indicated Equipment Package: Customer purchases own equipment.. For those who have received redundant modem, is that listed in your order status page? |

Hi TechKid, that happened to me too, and I tried calling but it was past customer service hours...will try again tm. I did open the box that came in the mail, and inside is a return ship label, so I'm assuming once you call in, they'll allow you to send it back to them. Does anyone else have something more concrete? |

yes, you will need SBC local service at a minimum to get dsl. I just had to do this in an attempt to use this deal. |
