probably nothing cheaper...and how much wide is wider for you? crop factor on this camera is 1.6x

Thanks oP, just want to ask one question. I have a Cannon rebel SLR, which has a 58mm(d) EF 28-80mm lense. If I buy this REBEL XT body, can I mount my old lense on to it?

Yes, XT takes both EF-S and EF lens.

now for a quality lense.
Does anyone have suggestions for the lense? Thanks a lot.
Canon 50mm 1.8f prime lens. $70, VERY sharp. The MKII is $70 and has a plastic body, and some have had quality issues. The older, 50mm MKI, is all metal but are hard to find <$130. Optically both are the same.

I also think if you use the DPA from Dell you can get intrest free until Jan of 06.
Its not black, but the silver body and comes with the lens, you would have to get a memory card. I think its the same camera. I called the rep and he assured me that the camera came with everything but a card.
Could someone else review before I buy from Dell and pay $100 more for just the body and an additional $70 for a lens.

Buying from a reputable merchant makes a big difference. I would ensure the camera I get is not from grey market and covered with U.S. warrantly, and no hard sale from the merchant. Dell is my choice!

The best bang for bucks are 50mm f1.8, and 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 and they seem to be good starter lens. Then I would save money for L lens, since eventually you want L lens mostly so I would save some efforts buying and selling medium level lens.

Many places, such as Amazon, or check pricegrabber. Too bad the price of 50mm is on the rise - I've been watching it for a while.
Ah, I thought there was a Dell discount. I've got a concession coupon but I dont want to buy at $99 price...

Thanks for all the information people. I am really new to this type of buying so appreciate all the posts. Question - I checked the listing for the Royal Camera Canon Rebel Xt @ 599.00. I know that I am niave - but it looked good to me. Is there a problem? It looks like you get camera and lenses for 599. Am I wrong?

Your instincts serve you well young Jedi.
They are rip-off artists and you'll never get your camera. Check resellerratings.com before buying anything from an unknown source.

I agree...get the fixed focal length lens (or two or three). In most every case you will be getting a sharper lens, a faster lens, a more compact lens, for much less money.
