Hi guys,

My second deal post; I am just not as crafty as JokerSmoker yet...

I was looking for a battery for my Cannon S300 which I bought on a tip here on FatWallet (thanks, OP of that one!), but I wanted to buy a few spare batteries to take with me on vacation. I came across this site, with pretty freaking great prices:

Linky

A high-capacity battery for $0.01 + $7 S&H! I was in for three...

Received them all and they work as advertised. I also noticed that I can take about 50% more photos with this battery.

Give me green if you like it...

Sigh.... I'll tell him.

Those batteries are the ones you hear about exploding and causing burns on the news. Trust me. Yes, those who skipped stats in high school will say "I got (insert number here) and none failed" - that is not proof. Want proof? My mostly melted SD400 that canon will not replace as they discovered through examination that I was using an aftermarket batty. Good luck with that though, I really hope this doesn't happen to you.

Crafty? I think you spelled that word wrong. Anyway, dont worry about keeping up with the joneses and posting just to post..a la some people, just post if u think it pretty good to hot.

Good for a practical joke or ex-girlfriend. "Ha-ha! Now you have to spend 4+ years in rehibilation acid girl!"

Your suggestion that they "explode and cause burns" is as valid as my statement that "I got X and none failed." Did you buy it from the same store? Was it the same model? Maybe you had a rare instance of batteries going bad, or maybe I have a rare instance of 3 batteries going good? What makes you sure that your experience carries more weight than mine?

Come on: a deal's a deal. Don't generalize, it's like bigotry for batteries.

Green for you. Thanks OP. I got a NP-FR1 and its charger.

Feedback from more established FW member

In my experience their batteries are junk but YMMV. About 5-6 months ago I got two from power101 for $11.80 shipped: one "high capacity" battery for a Canon S410 and one normal battery for an SD500. I charged both up and they each power their respective camera for about 5 minutes before the battery icon flashes and the cameras shut down. For the price, I decided it wasn't even worth my time to send them back and get new ones. For all I know that's what the proprietors of power101 are counting on...

Reading the feedback linked below, I'll send them an email to complain, but I don't realistically expect anything to come of it.

Counterfeit batteries could blow up.

Thanks OP!

I've been using aftermarket batteries for years, and I just bought more from eforcity.com through eBay, and I highly recommend it. To each his/her own, but I've had great experiences with them.

scored two for $11 A deal as long as they do not blow me up. Lucky so far. Thanks OP

You will void the warranty if these junk batteries damage the camera.

I order batteries on eBay from Hong-Kong. OEM, not aftermarket. Why risk $300 to save $20 ????? Thats plain stupid.

What if they blow up, ha-ha.

Only if a dood is dumb enough to leave the after-market battery in the device when sent in for repair.

My NP-FR1 lasts for 300 pictures.

But you actually posted a GOOD deal, not something that is the same price or cheaper at other retailers.

A lot of people think that camera and cell phone batteries thats made in JAPAN is good, but the truth is that most of the cheaper "made in Japan" batteries are counterfited batteries made in China. Most of the batteries thats made in China aint bad, although quality can be YMMV.

I got one of these for my Canon SD230 years ago and its been working fine. It was specifically made for the camera, and even uses the Canon charger.

YMMY, but mine's been good.

I looked for Sony FM50- It says made in China. The battery I have is made in Japan. I guess this is why it is cheaper. It is still 50% cheaper.-B

I have tried many of similar aftermarket batteries.
They usually do not perform as good as the "original" ones.
However for the prices per performance,
they still make good economic sense, especially for spares.

Come on folks. Stop the moaning about "blow ups" and "burns". The old saying buyer beware holds.

i have bought the batteries long time ago. the batteries (2 of them) quited working less than a year.

while battery charger shows that they are fully charged, it gives 'battery low' signal on the camera after 2-3 min of use.

thanks OP ordered 4..

They charge tax on the shipping and handling to CA. Still not a bad deal, though.

Following up to my earlier post, I finally heard back from power101. They're not refunding my $ and shipping like they did for the established FW member who posted glowing praise of their customer service. They want me to ship their defective batteries back to California at my expense. IMHO when you have to waste this much time, power101 isn't such a hot deal after all. I'm sticking with Canon batteries from now on.

Are there any other stores other than the eforcity mentioned here for cellphone batteries?

I believe you actually have a S230 instead of SD230, since Canon never introduced an SD230

I bought my batteries for my Canon camera at : http://www.sterlingtek.com

They have a 1 year warranty and a 30 day money back guarantee...

So far so good with their batteries!

Cheers!

Sorry, you can't realistically expect them to refund your money and shipping without verifying that your batteries are defective. Would NewEgg (or any other retailer) just take your word for it if you said that a video card you bought from them is defective, and refund your money while you kept the card? I think not. I don't see anything unreasonable about Power101's policy.

most companies have this RMA policy.

I have emailed them three days ago for a replacement request. I still have not heard from them yet. What is their typical response time?

I searched 4 some feedback on power101.com... looked OK 2 me so went ahead & bought a battery & charger for my new Canon ZR100. So far so good.... I especially like the quick "smart charger". Very small... looks nice... charges fast both my original Canon battery & the new P101 5 hr battery. Worst "Con" argument went something like..... "U get what U pay 4". Best Pro comment was that "the markup on OEM batteries is atrocious.... as N ludicrous". I went with the "Pro" dudes comment. I figure with the ZR100 battery pressed up against my face (yes that's where Canon put the battery) I will know when & if the battery is overheating & about 2 explode.

I bought 2 BP-511 for my canon G7. They both work great no complaint yet. Keeping my fingers crossed.

haha i was going to say that!! you beat me to it TS!

hmm to risk or not to risk... well i use generic batteries for a lot of other stuff (used a generic one for an ericsson phone for awhile and that one actually works better than my original ericsson one) but ppl are probably right about the elevated risk. how long is the canon warranty anyway? it's almost my baby sd300's first bday.
