Good deal.

If you want an extra $1, PM this against Circuit City or your favorite PM retailer.

on a maps note, google earth anyone?

Whats new in 2006??? Voice

But it is not clear whether all of the GPS features (trip trail, rerouting) are available in Pocket Streets. I have Pocket Streets 2005, and its GPS feature is pathetic: It simply shows your current location as a small circle. Not even a trip trail.

HATE REBATES....

Goto Sams Club and get it from there for $25.30 OTD (Including 7% tax)

Also if rebate is from MS, you can send that in, I always (20 this year) received MS rebates for Sams purchase.

Also those who want GPS unit with ST2006, goto COMPUSSR BM and get it for 86.xx OTD (tax 7% for me)

It is still same price and they are located in Camera section lockup where GPS/Handheld PC units are displayed.

That price was only good till yesterday from on online promotion. Current price is $129.00

Voice only works on XP. Not supported on PDAs. If you want voice directions in your car, make sure you bring along your laptop.

Ugh.

does pm hurt the rebate?

Thanks Poly! Works like a charm for me. $15 AR

It is $14.99 AR at Costco. Costco's rebate allows online submission and comes back very fast. Last year I sent in a rebate to MS also and got it with no problems, although lots of other people had it denied... So YMMV to get it for -$5 ;~)

Anyone used it? How about its "voice" function? will it prompt me HOW FAR AWAY to make the next turn? or just say "will turn R/L at xxx st."?

You can get for $9.99 at Shop.com:
http://www.shop.com/op/~Microsoft_Streets_Trips_2005-prod-10549709

It's part of the suite but has coplete version!

No, that's last year's version.

If I buy from Costco, where do I get the Microsoft rebate form? Thanks.

LOL, what a moron !

Tells you:

"In 0.7 miles, turn Right" / "In 2.4 miles, keep straight" / "**TollWay** Turn right onto ramp"

It does not pronounce street names.

The last 3 versions of DeLorme Steet Atlas give turn after turn with spoken street names and you can send anyone a map that you created without them having to have a copy of the software, unlike MS S&T's!The latest version 2006 has over 1 million more POI's......

I want to get a basic PDA with GPS function under $300. I need some expert advice or direct me to a helpful site. I googled w/o much result.

Thank you for your time in advance.

How about the $99 one from MS with GPS dongle?

Try www.gpspassion.com, good info there.

I don't think, 2005 and 2006 are much different. I was hoping 2006 has a voice command.

if this is true, what is the point of getting 2006 version? while you are moving at high speed 0,7mile may not be accurate, and it is so much easier to get BOTH distance left to turn (&R/L) and a name of street.

I have used their old versions. The map's display is a disaster. they use very multiple bright colors and bold lines. M$'s map is much clearer for viewing, IMHO.

How does this software compare to Street Atlas 2006? Which one is better, not taking into account price?

jbloggs said: How does this software compare to Street Atlas 2006? Which one is better, not taking into account price?

if what Inane said is true, i would stay away from MS S&T 2006 version, and stick with SA 2005/2006.

it feels like MS is always trying to develope (& do a mess job) the features which SA already has.

Directions are confusing and most importantly -- incorrect. I found that Yahoo maps gave better directions.

My magellan 700 doesnt give audio street names, its fine.

Is there a good map software for Palm OS (no need for it to work with a GPS card)?

try mapopolis for palm and windows mobile. the maps aren't pretty, but it provides voice prompts and actually "tries" to pronounce street names, which can be pretty helpful...and humorous when it's wrong (e.g. it always pronounces "st" as "Saint"). You can download an eval version and maps from their website.

Will the rebate also work on the one with the GPS model?

Thanks. Will check it out. I do not really want to use my Palm with a GPS card, just wanted to have the maps loaded for reference when needed.

If you buy from Sams, do you use the rebate in the box (prior version proof of purchase) or is there another rebate to submit. I did not see that a prior version was required from the Best Buy rebate form.

Anyone know if the MST 2005 with GPS is on clearance anywhere? Now that the 2006 version is out, stores should soon be clearing out the old versions, I hope.

Just picked up one from Costco and submitted rebate online. (34.99 - 20 rebate = 14.99). There is no Microsoft Rebate form in box, but try here.

Rebate Form Item 1:
"1. Acquire Streets & Trips 2006 (Note: Only specially marked packages that message this rebate qualify for this offer.)"

- so likely when they see Costco on the receipt (which is required) and reject it...

Microsoft does make Voice command (see link.), but as you can see this is only for Pocket PCs and Smartphones. I believe you are referring to directional voice prompts; Streets and Trips 2006 has this capability.

As for the GPS itself, if your iPAQ has bluetooth, I'd suggest going with a BT one instead of a wired one. The latest generation of GPS chips which have come out this year have amazing sensitivity and work in urban canyons and dense forests where previous generations did not. Some are so sensitive they can even get a fix inside a house (depending on construction). Find a good/recent detailed comparison at:

Thanks for the advice. Actually my employer is giving me a 39XX series iPAQ. Nothing fancy and no BT but I am not complaining because it is free. Do you think one of those that plug right into the SD slot on top is any good? I will check out the reviews on gpspassion.com.
