You can't beat getting a free toy, but don't buy a vacuum cleaner without doing your homework.
I do not know how Dyson rates these days, When I bought our last vacuum, Dyson's rated poorly in terms of cleaning power. I bought a Consumer Reports' top rated Eureka Boss Smartvac at Costco for less than a Dyson. It is very powerful...and quiet.

Don't believe everything you read in Consumer Reports. Some of their reviews are terribly biased...even though they said they aren't.
Go and test them out for yourself if you are looking to buy one. If you don't like it, just take it back. This was one purchase that I wasn't sure of (I was ready to take it back if it didn't perform), after using it I'm completely happy with it.
It's ok. Some people buy rainbows and filter queens and they are way more overpriced than Dysons. As long as the customer is happy, let Dyson sell their stuff. Although the words Dyson, Filterqueen and Rainbow vacuums shouldn't really be on a bargain site IMO since they are are all overpriced.

If EVER there was a thing for consumer reports to test, it is vacuum cleaners. How can they get it wrong? There is no way. Now, they don't really test reliability but they have surveys for that. Besides there seem to be as many refurbished dysons as new ones so I'm not sure Dyson can claim great reliability. Ok, I've said my peace and I'll go away now.

I plan on getting a refurb from Amazon soon. I think a lot of their 'refurb' are just customer returns deciding they don't want to spend the $$$. I borrowed a friend's DC14. I literally vacuumed my townhouse with my vacuum. Eureka, don't remember the model - it has bags, and it was rated #2 by CR when I got it (but I don't agree with CR half the time either, that's a story for another day). When I used the DC14 after my run, I pulled up enough fuzz and cat hair that the wad was the size of a coke can. There was only 15 minutes in between the two runs, and not even my fat kitty sheds THAT fast.

I think it's more important to see how something like a vacuum performs over a period of months/years (much like how they get info for most reliable cars, based on recalls, warranty claims, etc). I know that this works better than any other vacuum I have had (or my parents have had). With an item like a vacuum it's easy to take it home and try it out for some period of time and with places like Costco(who has an awesome return policy) it makes it even easier to try things like vacuums. I'm not saying that they aren't overpriced, because they are really expensive at full price, but getting one for around $300 they aren't much more than some other high priced vacuums. It's been documented that their customer service is top of the line, I have never heard someone complain about it. Even if stuff breaks (which it always will over time) they seem to always replace it, a few people have had stuff replaced over a year out of warranty w/o question. I guess to each his own.

I recently bought a DC14 from Kohls for 288+tax and compared with my 5+ year old Hoover windtunnel. I fail to see Dyson outperform my 5 year old Hoover. Not sure why. People say once they vacume with their old vacume, then use Dyson, and the Dyson picked up so much dirt again. My Dyson did not pick up much, even after several days of vacummed with Hoover. So either my house is too clean or Dyson is not working as expected.
All in all, it is an over priced vacume with OK performance for me.
You can vacuum with any vacuum and then vacuum again with another vacuum or even the same vacuum and get dirt the second time. That's an old vacuum cleaner salesman trick.
I dont care what anybody says. We have 3 vaccumes at my house. An Oreck a hoover and a dyson. We got the dyson and its fanatical! I will never buy any other vacuum except the dyson (the purple one) if this vacuum cost $1,000 I would take out a loan and buy it. It has saved the future of my pets if anything

Would love to agree with you, but quite honestly we've been dissappointed with their choices for vacuum cleaners over the past 6 years. The issue of reliability is very big within a home with serious allergies and each time we have gone with their choice we've had a vacuum to literally fall apart within less than a year's period of time.

See, we experienced the same with a CR recommended Hoover which lasted less than one year. So, it's YMMV.

If reliability is an issue, there are better brands than Dyson or Hoover.
A toy vacuum? That's too bad, I was hoping for a Sphere.
Joking aside, I have a Dyson vacuum, and I wouldn't buy a different brand after this. It picks up everything, and made my eureka's vacuuming look like a roomba by comparison.
My Dyson was the most *I* spent on any ONE item in my apt. NO regrets as it is fabulous taking care of my 2 cat household. I have the Dyson DC14 Animal, which was bought new with pm'ing and coupons and no regrets!

My parents have a rainbow that's older than me and still works wonders. I've been looking into a dyson. I've heard some bad reviews on it, but more good than bad. I was just wondering, from the people that have it, how is it on human hair? We have a shorthaired cat, so the cat hair around the house isn't that bad. Sadly, I shed more than my cat and it's been getting stuck in our current vacuum cleaner.

I know, because monthly I have to get under there with a pair of needlenose pliers and a boxcutter.
In related long-human-hair news, I have found nothing better than a pair of rubber gloves and one of these when it comes to drains.

The dyson rep was at our store today. She showed us how easy the snap apart in the two areas that you would need to take apart if they happen to clog.
