EMS has been around here (DC area) forever. Generally, their EMS-labeled stuff is good quality and I'd say maybe a little better than REI's and Bauer's. Don't think that I've ever been disappointed with anything that I've bought from them. Only knock against them would be that regular prices are on the high side, but they have good sales as things move off-season. I've never bought online, but B&M are very easy to deal with. Good place and good stuff in my experience.
Actually, EMS is more on the east coast while REI seems to be more prevalent on the west coast. I have heard of both of them but have only been in EMS as we have those in NYC.
anyone familiar with ems's return policy if it doensn't fit?

EMS is a pretty safe bet. I'm a rock-climbing instructor and guide, and would feel comfortable with just about anything badged EMS. Strongly considering purchasing this jacket even though I don't really need one.

Mountain Hardwear's Phantom. Of course, that jacket is twice this price.
I would have to agree since I own one myself. However, the EMS jacket is nothing out of the ordinary as far as looks go. I have definately seen down jackets that look worse. As far as I'm concerned, the EMS looks like your basic down jacket design, but with 800-fill.
