My parents have some VERY VERY VERY old humidifiers and they run pretty silent and get a good amount of moisture in the air.

Ultrasonic humidifiers are great if you need a silent machine. They do have the single drawback of spreading fine dust in the room, but there are models like the air-o-swiss that do a better job of removing the minerals from the water that cause the dust. Mine has spread some dust, but that was only because I neglected to change the mineral filter on schedule. You may be able to find a return for a decent price at Bed Bath and Beyond - or at least see one on display.
