This thread was long due
Thanks OP

I can't seem to get the free dl to work, shows $9.95 in cart.

Yes, we need this thread. Thanks OP!

Still want to know if you use the online TurboTax, if it will look for previous years and fill in all the pertinent info like the software does. If not, I'd rather just buy the software. Save a whole lot of typing.

Yes you can import last years if you saved the file in .tax format.

Excellent. Thanks.

Great idea.

Got this link in an email the other day. Its for filing with H&R Block TaxCut Online, with free E-file. Both the TaxCut Online EZ and Premium are FREE making it a better deal than the BofA link.
FREE Federal Return: Prepare and eFile your Federal return for free if you're age 50 or younger with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $50,000 or less. Additional fees apply for state returns and eFiling.
or
FREE Federal, one State, plus eFiling: Get more FREE when you choose to have your refund deposited to the new H&R Block Refund VisaŽ Prepaid Card. Get your refund faster, and use the card wherever Visa is accepted.*

There is a EZ version, and a Premium version for all the other stuff, but both say they are free for federal return. The email mentions that there may be a fee for state returns and e-filing if you go this route, but the description for both online services mention:
FREE Federal E-file - Once you complete your federal return, you can e-file it at no additional charge.
Link

For basic taxes (family/normal work/etc.) I used freetaxusa for 2003 and 2004. Then it was free federal and cheap state. Now it's $9.95/each of state and federal, unless your AGI is <$50K. A decent system, well organized and complete. It took good care of me.

My wife owns a small business (sole proprietorship) so I needed 1040 sch. C this year. I went through taxslayer, a decent program though I couldn't get it to work with Mozilla. (Opera was fine.) $9.95 total for state and federal e-file. If I hadn't known all my deductions in advance, I wouldn't have gotten them, so YMMV if you're looking for a more wizard-ish program.

I e-filed both state and federal this afternoon; I need the refund.

Thanks for the summary OP! Great idea!

The "Essentials" is actually the 1040EZ version which costs $9.95 for everybody, even though not many people can use it (no stocks, itemezed deductions, etc) Where is the special 'deal'??

The deal is that it is free processing and free to print to mail. Normally you have to pay $9.95 just to use the software.

Anyone figure out how to combine the BofA 50% with the TaxFreedom free Federal?

"TAX CUT
$2.98 TaxCut Online EZ * $9.98 TaxCut Online Premium * $39.98 TaxCut Online Signature * from Bank of America"

after going through the TaxCut online Signature, the price still shows 79.99? Anyone have problem going through that link?

*update: per CSR, if you have filed with hrblock online before, you must create a new account for the discount.

Thanks OP, got taxcut 2005 downloaded for free.

I'm also looking for taxcut 2004, can anyone help me on that?

Thanks.

Thanks for the tip about MI, I couldn't find any deals and was about to pay for it

Has anyone tried using the Statefarm free TurboTax online. It is asking for a promotion code. If so, do you know what it is?

I acess Statefarm website when I was ready to pay instead of going thru Turbotax.com

I purchased TaxCut when there was only a $10 gift card given by Staples. After calling, I received an additional $5 gift card.Lefty loosey, righty tighty...

thanks leenga ... having state-farm actually paid off

TaxCut 2005 is always free. Can anyone find the free TaxCut State 2005 for free?

IT will if you buy the upgrade for $19.95 instead of 44.95. If you hadn't already gotten an answer

I assume if you use TTax online, then one doesn't end up getting a computer file with a .tax extension to use for future returns? So if I did TTax online, I'd be stuck with them if I want to transfer my tax data to a different program next year?

I am a State Farm customer. Does it give the State return free? I qualify for free fed. based on income, and want to get good price on state also.

Just so everyone knows (as I'm sure there are people who don't), most people can file California state taxes for free at CalFile. It's the California Franchise Tax Board's website.

That saves you the $19.95 or $24.95 most sites try and charge to file the CA return.

got in on last years freefile from turbotax. this year's free file doesnt allow you to auto-import from last year. you gota pay $20 to upgrade to turbotax online deluxe. and state is another $20.

grr.. if i would have known that, i would have just bought turbo tax deluxe from the store for $10 after rebates/coupon. And state would have been free (after rebate).

NOT just this year's free file doesn't allow you auto-import. Last year is the same. The Turbo-Tax online free file never allow you to auto-import. That's why people would rather pay last year (and this year) to allow suto-import.

So apparently the state e-filing is never free with them this year. Does anyone have free e-filing for New York?

Update, the above was asking for filing my kids' returns. Apparently, the answer is TaxSlayer, assuming they do not at some point ask for my personal income (it says "household income under $50k").

TaxEngine is also free for NY residents but you need income of 10-50k.

I have TurboTax (desktop) 2005 and would like to e-file. I am under the $50k AGI limit for free e-filing; however, the desktop TurboTax would like to me pay a $29.99 fee for e-filing. I don't want to go through the hassle of re inputting my info into the TT online app since I have a messy tax return with SE taxes part of the year, some payments from last year, etc. etc. It would take a long time I think, especially if I can't import it from 2004.

Thoughts on getting around this situation. Do I have to suck it up and pay the $29.95 on top of the $1k I owe in taxes? Why the hell did I buy TT desktop if it costs $$ to e-file?

I thought Turbo Tax was for people who didn't know how to do their taxes or to make it simpler for people. I bought it and sent my return in by mail.

I just filed my kids returns using TaxSlayer since federal and state returns are free. It seemed simple enough to use, although their data entry is not nearly as intuitive (pardon the pun) as TurboTax, which I have installed on my machine. For example for the 1099-B, TS does not have you fill in the fields exactly as they are on the form, so I missed entering the "qualified dividends" field initially, which caused it not to use the qualified dividends tax calculation, which would have cost an extra $2 in tax. Fortunately I caught it before submitting. Also there is no specific place to enter a 1099-OID, it just gets entered as normal interest. TT has a specific section for entering them. There is also no place to enter foreign income tax withheld from a 1099-DIV (I had to enter it manually under credits).

Also, when you submit the return, they do not immediately pop up the state payment voucher and tell you to print it (NYS apparently does not take online payments). If you print the return, it's in there along with the "do not file" pages that they print. They also did not enforce the minimum age of 16 for selecting a self-select PIN for the federal return. We'll see if they reject the return because of it (my son is only 15).

That said, you cannot beat the price! Now onto my return, which I think I am going to have to file for an extension on. I see that TS will file 4868's online for free. I wonder if there is an AGI limit on that offer as there is for normal tax returns.

Anyone use Tax Act? I usually use TaxCut, but T Act seems like a nice program and prices are great.

Update on TaxSlayer - both of my kids federal and state returns have been accepted.

I e-filed an extension (free) with Taxslayer last night. Nowhere do they tell you that there is not going to be a way to pay the amount due (I figured they would pop something up after the submission). WRONG. So I then went and filed another extension with Taxact (also free) and they managed to do things correctly and took my checking account number. Unfortunately, the IRS will only take one extension, so the Taxact submission was rejected, and even though I can resubmit it if I can clear up the problem, there is NO WAY to undo the first extesion, per the IRS guy I spoke to on the phone. So now I have to mail a check and pay a 1/2% late fee. I sent a really scathing note to Taxslayer and I am putting this here as a warning to anyone who might want to consider using them for extension filing in the future.
