You can use any carriers after you unlock it if Cingular is your carrier , you only need to use the old SIM card

Yes, but you will have to unlock it first. An ATTWS sim card will NOT work in a locked Cingular phone.

Check gsmworld.com (what used to be gsm.org - gsm.com was already taken by publisher of medical software), you can select your band and country and see the coverage.
As an example, in India only AirTel and Hutch would support GSM 1800 and each only in some areas, although most major areas seem to be covered by one or the other.
I had no problems in Egypt, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, France with GSM 1800 phone.

Why no one is considering Sony Ericsson T290a. Is it a good phone? The nokia 3220 has a camera, but reviews from Cnet said the camera is crap.

feature wise n3220 is more packed than the t290a considering both phones are of the same price. and by experience nokia phones have better reception and faster user interface (for SMS messages and navigating menus) than ericsson. and the 3220 supports 3 bands (850/1800/1900), which you can use in
most countries in Asia and Europe unlike t290a which limits its usage in the Americas only and probably some countires in Europe. At any rate it boils down to one's preference.

Has anyone on this forum unlocked Nokia 3220? Do we use the same method as we did back on the free Nokia 3120 phone? If so, please feel free to share this info... 3220 looks like a great phone without all of the bells and whistles although it does have quite a bit to offer.

Here is some unlock info I could dig up so far:

1. Nokia 3220 is a DCT4 phone. (Per this website)
2. Country/ Operator should be "Cingular/ Pacific Bell"

..looks like once we have the phones we can try this and hopefully it should work. Remember folks- you have 5 retries before the phone gets locked, after which you need to use a USB cable to unlock it.

I did the Cingular 3120 deal last year (where they gave away phones for free), as far as I can recall, it was very similar to this.

download, unzip, and install the v3.10 calculator
run the program
click the option button
check expert box
then click back
(now the fun part)
cellphone select = nokia
model select = 3120(RH-19)(don't worry if yours is a RH-50, it won't make a difference)
enter your phone's IMEI number
(you can find the IMEI under the battery, or by pressing *#06#)
country select = USA
provider select = Cingular - pacific bell
MCC+MNC: =(auto generated)
select (Asic 2)
(now the important part in order to generate the correct code)
for Gen you must select (Custom) and type the value (32835)
then click Calculate. You will see bunch of code on the right side just like below

Important!
Don't try codes 2-6, you only get 5 tries to unlock your phone. If neither 1 or 7 works, try the below sites.

Update - I just received my phone. I used the v3.10 calculator for which bangis provided instructions. I copied down code 1 that was generated. Just to make sure I had the correct code, I went to the http://www.unlocknokia.us site. I registered and posted my request. In just 5 minutes a moderator named etowah replied with the same code. I used the code that both had generated and successfully unlocked my phone.

To access TZones after unlocking

Don't have time now to explain step by step changes but basically you have to change the wap setting to goto tmobile not Cingular. Here are the correct setting from hward forums. They can be found under the services->settings menu


Menu=>Services=>Settings=>Select=>Activate "Set 1"

Scroll down and select Edit active service setting

Rename to Wap (or whatever you want to call it)

SE phones can be unlocked only by using a data cable and softwares unlike the nokias that can be unlocked via codes. most local cellfone shops charge between $5 to $10 for the unlocking
service.
