how is this better than mapquest?

alert mods

how is this bettern than using maps.google.com to get directions?

alert mods

I have an older version of MS S&T and liked it a lot. I have been looking for a deal to update. However, in the meantime, I found Yahoo Maps Beta version... and like it even more. The only thing missing is a point-to-point measuring tool, but I'm told they are working on that too. Very nice, free software that will not need to be updated. Overlays are nice features too. Just MHO.

thanks in advance!

Good post, OP. In for one.

Show you local attractions as you get near them? Give you voice commands to get off the highway at the next exit as you approach your destination? You need to have an optional GPS device to take advantage of some of those features, but the features are there and most of us already have a GPS receiver from previous deals.

*sigh* his answer really is "No, its better than google maps if you need it inside your car"

and if you happen to have a GPS device and if you don't mind lugging your laptop every time you go out (not knowing when you might need it) and if you don't mind a likelihood of a break-in because you left that shiny new laptop in the front seat.

Google maps may be fine for getting directions, but that's it. What if there's an accident that shuts down the highway and you have to get off and find a detour? What if google makes a mistake and there's no exit at a cross over point to another highway? What good are those directions now? The whole point of having an atlas on a CD is so you can have it on the road. I can't imagine anyone installing this software on a desktop home PC.

I've used paper atlases in the past and the trouble is they don't have enough detail when you get to local roads, unless you buy a county altas for each county you travel in. You may as well haul a library trailer behind your car for that. This software solves that problem.

If you're 'tarded enough to do that...

This program is great for mapping multiple points. I used '05 when shopping for a house. I just typed in the MLS addresses and made an optimized day trip. Good program, nice post OP.

So how is google maps going to help you in that case? You didn't know you needed directions so now you have nothing. Smart thinkin' !

where to find a good(& cheap) gps to go with this boy?

I've been a MS street & trip user since 2000 I think.

good way to get direction from place to place.
sure you have googlemap and mapquest or what ever online sites now.

but I perfer the easy interface of a standalone app. instead of that stupid having to wait for a map to draw or limited view. and u need constand highspeed net access.. (sure u can use 56k but its slow to annoying level)

with MS streets I get full screen maps that I can zoom in and out very fast. There are better and more feature rich mapping software like Garmin City Select which I have also but those run you like $100+ I always get MS street because it's usually around $20AR and does the job I needed to do.

If you want incar navigation and gps capability, you should just consider getting a standalone car nav gps.

MS street is good for area intelligence and pre trip direction mapping. to me the gps support is a bonus, but personally I woun't bring a laptop in a car for car nav. because it's just too big and hard to keep stable in my car.

hehehe this is what I do when I find a target.

use big yellow to locate their address based on the tel number.

use MS streets to find a local resturant really close to them and call up the res. to make sure it's still in business.

call the mark and say you're in the res .. "just down the block from you"

Amusing. So the purpose of such a call is to do what...create panic? Make them think they're surrounded when you're not even in the same town as them?

the pocket version of M$ S&T is bad. But it's a great software to have in your desktop or laptop.

For pda gps software, better go with mapopolis
