if this doesn't provide directions, how could it tell you to take the right exit (since that is providing directions)? also, what good is the voice prompt?

sorry, but i just see some seemingly conflicting posts...

For the link clicking/reading impaired:

Microsoft Streets & Trips 2006 is customizable trip-planning software that helps you get accurate directions, easily explore new areas and find the services you need along the way. You can plan fuel and food stops, add scenic detours or easily alter your route. Any trip can be simplified with detailed door-to-door directions thanks to updated maps of the U.S. and Canada. Voice and text-prompted directions keep your focus on the road ahead, while online information about road construction helps you to avoid frustrating delays.

Features:

Customizable trip-planning options allow you to plan stops, add multiple destinations and quickly alter your route

Includes more than 1.8 million points of interest, such as restaurants, ATMs and hotels without the need to be online

Get accurate and detailed door-to-door directions for any trip

Updated maps for the U.S. and Canada include more than 5.9 million miles of roads and highways

Free, up-to-date road construction info from the Internet helps to avoid potential delays

GPS routing features include GPS trail, rerouting and distance-based voice prompting (requires a GPS device that supports NMEA 2.0 or later)

Includes Pocket Streets for Pocket PC and Smartphone

The voice prompt is so you don't have to look at the laptop screen to see when the next turn is coming up while driving at 60mph.

jason745 said:Pocket streets should work fine with your axim, but if you are looking for software that will route you to a destination PS won't do that. It only shows your gps location on a map and tells you various types of destinations in a city but not how to get to them.

aah, i mistook this to mean S&T too...

my bad!

This stuff ccomes in two different packages one without the GPS locator. it is the size of a car remote, with a long usb cable and the software CD and manual. The second one is without the locator which is usually priced 39.99 on sale. the one with GPS locator is priced around 129.99 on sale at about 89.99

This thread is talking about the one without the locator. For all you screamers.

True, using this is as not good and comfortable as a window mounted GPS or a PDA form. but they cost a ton. I have used it and it is pretty good. Yes you do have challenges. YOur laptop is going to time out and go into hibernation if you dont keep keying in something every 4 mins as it will be on battery. and if you have to log in every time after hibernation you cant do that when driving .. but all overcome-able situations with modifying the settings. If you are travelling and stuck it certainly is a big help. You dont need a net connection to be on for this to work.

If you don't want your laptop goes into hibernation, it can't be easier. Change your power management scheme and you're fine

Why does it say it requires previous purchase in the BB ad though?

Anyone try pming at Staples?

the software still has some flaws.

When going east on De Zavala Rd (San Antonio, 78249) to hit I-10 East go downtown San Antonio, instead of making a right turn at the traffic light (which can actually be done), the software stupidly tells you to cross under the highway, make a left turn and then a U-turn. That's just plain silly.

Mapping data is not always accurate, when zoomed in, I always see myself "flying" on the side of the highway.

No route map for insde of State parks, national parks.

Voice command doesn't say the exit name, sometimes only number, sometimes simply say "turn right" or "take ramp right"....

Anyway, there's still a lot to be improved in this software.

Works for me. I always carry my laptop when I'm on the road

of course that can't be done for rides longer than a few hours, unless you use an inverter...

unless you have a dock for the laptop (as in a stable stand), it's very unsafe (laptop could fall onto floor) and if it's night, could get you into trouble with the law.

My Staples did the 110% PM.
Got it for $17.99+tax

I plug my laptop into my Kensington Notebook DC power adapter. It works great because my screen brightness is on high. I can also leave the DC adapter in the car all the time compared to if you use an inverter the AC adapter has to follow the laptop to the house for each use.

Great idea! I actually bought a copy at Best Buy but I am happy to return it and get it for $2 less at Staples! The rebate is from MS, good anywhere.

By the time I got around to it. All the BB's where OOS. Hence it would be a tough Staples PM when they call to verify stock. I just stuck with my BB copy.

What the h*ll am I going to do with my rewards check that expires on the 30th!!!!!
