Until you ever try and get service with Dell nowadays. I think for all the headaches getting "service", I would just replace the bad part myself.
I have had pretty good luck with Dell customer service. I just tell them that I did whatever they ask me to and tell them that i am not interested in doing any more troubleshooting with them and tell them what they need to do .. works for me always.. I have had to contact Dell for service only a couple of times in the last 4-5 years.
And for $25, i will highly recommend it again .. u cant go wrong with $12.50/yr !!! whether u use their service or not ..

In for 1. I have a dimension 3000 and love it. How does this processor at 2.8G compare to the Dimension 3000's P4 at 3GHz? Is it the same model, just 200MHz slower, or other changes too?

been looking for a new system to replace our old one....we need a new computer, but not really really bad yet..is this a pretty good deal, with enough power to do lots of picture, media, microsoft office kind of stuff? or should i hold out for something better and more powerful? it seems like a good deal, don't just want to jump on a wimpy system that most people may consider a second or third computer.....
thanks in advance!
oh, i also saw earlier about FatCash - not valid for dimension purchases

Ordered 13 of these on Friday for $519 not realizing this deal was going on. The machines only had 17 inch monitors and 512mb ram.
Called back today and they happily changed the deal to this one. Awesome deal.
Thanks for the heads up about NOT having a x16 PCI Express slot! I was all set to get this but I am out if I can't upgrade the onboard video! Bleh!
tzuke said: Depends on your use. Gaming? Yeah, big difference. Office/email/internet? Keep your money. Video encoding? Big difference.
The monitor is a huge part of the deal too.
This machine has a PCI Express x1 slot but NOT a x16 slot so no graphics card can be added.

if you're saying this computer is not vista compatible and also can't install a new graphics card, does that mean that you're limited to what's onboard? and also that when vista comes out, it won't be compatible with many of the features of vista?
in that sense, will previous dells also have the same limitations if they're not of the newer model? just doesn't seem to make sense that everyone with a older desktop model would have to change computers or upgrade just to be able to take advantage of the new OS

Change it to "3-5 days shipping" for free shipping.
Looks like even Dell is recommending avoiding this one for Vista.
Oh well, by the time Vista comes out we'll be buying Pentium 8's running at 900GHz anyway.

In regards to Vista: a) it's not coming out until at least Jan/Feb, maybe even after that if they continue to have problems and b) just because Vista comes out doesn't mean a user should go upgrade their OS, if winXP suits your needs now, keep using it. Vista is not, repeat not, a must-have upgrade. Even still, this computer will run Vista. It just won't run the new eye-candy interface.
If you want to play the latest games, don't get this computer. However, if you don't do 3d gaming, this is a great system deal. If your primary computer uses are office/internet/email this is a great system purchase.

hey tzuke - thanks for the great advice...one last question....if i intend to do a lot of video recording processing, such as transferring old hi 8 tapes to digital format, as well as transferring digital to my computer, will this system be able to do it? in my old setup i have a all in wonder....will i be able to plug that in here or could i still do the video editing without changing the video graphics card here...
thanks again!

I'm thinking about buying Dimension. Preferably 5150 but don't know too much about the computer. Could someone help me choose the right processor? I'd like to be able to run multiple programs including Powerpoint, Photoshop, and Illustrators at the same time. Should I choose the Pentium D with Dual Core or Pentium 4 Processor with HT? What is the difference between the two? Is there any configurations that anyone recommends? Any deals on Dell that I should take or wait for? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I am waiting for a good deal of 5150 with ultra sharp LCD that appears two weeks ago Can anyone comment on the performance of these two systems?
chronotrigger said: I normally expand the bigger Dimension PCs, but I thought even the 3100 would have those nice Dell plastic pieces that let you attach an extra hard drive?
If not, then when you buy a hard drive, you should have the screws. If that still didn't help, you might need some kind of mounting bracket, which you can also get. CompUSA probably is the best local choice for that.
These PCs are great for average users, like many people said. Great PCs. They even can play the older games that used to be the CPU hog back when Pentium 2 or Pentium 3 was the top dog!
Yeah, it has a braket, unfort, its for the SATA drive. I have a IDE hard drive I want to install and I don't think that the ide cable would reach it (one of the connectors already connect to the dvd drive). I can try, but I was thinking of putting the hard drive in the drive bay.
However, the drive bay is a little different that what I'm used to. I have plenty of screws, but the drive bay has slots, so you can slide in a drive and the screws would glid through. These screws, I don't have and the ones I have either too thick or too small. I already have the mounting braket to convert the hard drive to fit into a 5.25" bay area.
I'll try the bay on the bottom and hopefully the IDE cable will go to the DVD and the hard drive.
