Yeah, that's how I got my current subscription using Delta miles. Can't remember exactly how many I used, but it wasn't many. Also got a subscription to WSJ that I've enjoyed. They sent me the offer with a statement saying my miles were going to expire soon. And the 5K miles I had were from a FW deal that I got for free!

A current subscriber to the Economist can give a gift of a subscription to another person at a very low rate. Last year I believe the rate was $69 per year. (I don't know the current rate.)

sweet the economist is a badass magazine. its no fluff, it makes time/newsweek look like a joke it is expensive, but youget what u pay for i guess. its real reporting in todays full of shiet media, and no its not partisan either.

yea i guess they are libertarian. i think in parts of europe liberal actually means libertarian? labels just don't translate from country to country.

it just has the world coverage you don't get from other sources. it fills that huge reporting gap, and has actual in depth analysis instead of just headlines. and a foreign perspective on america is always interesting. the name does make it sound like a financial mag or something, but really it has news/science/entertainment along with the financial section.

You could call Economist a lot of things, but 'leftist' is not one of them by any stretch of the imagination. Economist has historically had strong anti-socialist bias. Most Economist editorials has been (and still are) clearly on the side of free trade and less goverment intervention.

Regardless of their political bias, Economist have been relatively objective in their news coverage. They are one of the few print publications that cover most of the major events in the world on a weekly basis in great detail and mostly based on facts.

I've been reading the Economist since high school and it seems to me they've become more "American-centric", with feature after feature on US domestic crises and policy, while curtailing reporting on EU microeconomic issues. One of the hallmarks of this biweekly had been its global analyses of international economics/politics from a distinctly neo-conservative British point of view. Lately for me, it seems to have lost its "edge" and its articles are indistinguishable from the NY Times or WSJ.

But despite its shortcomings, what other magazine can drill into your mind phrases like: Schumpeterian, creative destructivism, moral hazard, and the holy Big Mac Index!
