skander said:I like Economist's compactness and breadth of areas that it addresses but I don't like the way it addresses. Few issues that I have observed in the last few years are: Strong political bias in their reporting, their stand on various geo-political issues (I feel its getting more and more leftist), selective information reporting (especially in their 'country' specific surveys), and often lengthy but not much informative articles. Not that other magazines do not have these issues but I feel that Economist is just becoming one of them. This is just a personal opinion.
I've been reading for a while and I've seen a lot of this.
They definitely are not afraid to take a position. You see this all the time. It's their trademark. Actual statement: "Despite the latest scandals, linking executive pay to share performance is a good idea." They're not just reporting new on executive pay scandals, they're taking a position. It's what they do.
I don't see them as particularly left. They alternately back Europe's more socialist systems and the US more money-oriented systems.
They're 100% pro free trade and as I just quoted here, all for people making loads of money.
I don't see that as leftist. I do agree they richochet back and forth on some issues, possibly to increase circulation. It's also possible they do it because of difference of opinions in the authors of the articles. This is difficult to tell since articles (except the farewell of the editor a few issues back) are uncredited.
Anyway, more on topic, do any of these subscription deals work for renewals? The Economist are also firm believers in giving discounts to get you in the door and then charging you full price to renew. Anyone have renewal deals?

The price you pay for the honesty and integrity of the Economist is comparatively nothing and is something I haven't seen elsewhere in the news since Walter Cronkite retired. You need look no further than this weeks article on the failure of air power to understand why they are superior and worth every penny. Our leaders in government should be required to read it and pass a test on the content. We would have better government. |
