Great magazine. Got my sub off eBay too last year for $40, but all of a sudden all these Economist deals disappeared from eBay simutaneously a couple of months ago, anybody know why? Now the cheapest I cant find is $77/yr. JayGatsby said: Got my sub off eBay for less than $50/yr.
I don't know how those sellers do it, or if it's legal, but it sure is cheap!

This is a good price for subscriptions. There were couple of miles program offering Economist but they have stopped it in the recent past. It will be nice to know any other miles program that offers Economist.
On the side note, I am of the opinion that quality of Economist is being degraded in the recent past and I will not continue my subscription once it expires.

I like Economist's compactness and breadth of areas that it addresses but I don't like the way it addresses. Few issues that I have observed in the last few years are: Strong political bias in their reporting, their stand on various geo-political issues (I feel its getting more and more leftist), selective information reporting (especially in their 'country' specific surveys), and often lengthy but not much informative articles. Not that other magazines do not have these issues but I feel that Economist is just becoming one of them. This is just a personal opinion.

I have been reading for several years and noticed nothing of the sort. The joy of viewpoints!

You can usually email the customer service and ask.
Foreign Affairs offers a nice discount to students, but they want a copy of your student id.

Haven't noticed this myself, but then maybe I'm just drifting left along with the magazine. (Or skander is drifting right, hard to say!)
Either way, The Economist is still has the broadest news coverage of any magazine. I'd bet that if you compared the wordcount of The Economist with Time/Newsweek/USNews, it would have 4-5 times more content. (Then again, it's not like I actually read most of the news articles about S.America and Africa.)

Isn't there a pricegrabber type site for magazine subscriptions?

Yeah, that's how I got my current subscription using Delta miles. Can't remember exactly how many I used, but it wasn't many. Also got a subscription to WSJ that I've enjoyed. They sent me the offer with a statement saying my miles were going to expire soon. And the 5K miles I had were from a FW deal that I got for free!

It was probably only 2000 miles. Still kicking myself for not taking advantage of it while it lasted.
A current subscriber to the Economist can give a gift of a subscription to another person at a very low rate. Last year I believe the rate was $69 per year. (I don't know the current rate.)

Umm,, $98 - $25 GC = $73, which is less than $77 without lying (if you aren't a student). Assuming you were going to spend the money at Amazon regardless.
sweet the economist is a badass magazine. its no fluff, it makes time/newsweek look like a joke it is expensive, but youget what u pay for i guess. its real reporting in todays full of shiet media, and no its not partisan either.
That's because Time and Newsweek ARE a joke - all infotainment and little information or investigation. But the Economist is indeed partisan - they make no bones about admitting to adhereing to a libertarian philosophy.
Note that's libertarian, not 'liberal' - a word which means something different to each person who uses it.
yea i guess they are libertarian. i think in parts of europe liberal actually means libertarian? labels just don't translate from country to country.
it just has the world coverage you don't get from other sources. it fills that huge reporting gap, and has actual in depth analysis instead of just headlines. and a foreign perspective on america is always interesting. the name does make it sound like a financial mag or something, but really it has news/science/entertainment along with the financial section.
"Magazines for Miles" is the site where you can use Delta, American and perhaps other miles for magazines.
I used 3,000 or so miles for a full-year sub to the Economist a few months ago. It doesn't appear to be available now.

You could call Economist a lot of things, but 'leftist' is not one of them by any stretch of the imagination. Economist has historically had strong anti-socialist bias. Most Economist editorials has been (and still are) clearly on the side of free trade and less goverment intervention.
Regardless of their political bias, Economist have been relatively objective in their news coverage. They are one of the few print publications that cover most of the major events in the world on a weekly basis in great detail and mostly based on facts.
Isn't it nice to be able to read and not have an ad shoved in your face on every other page?

I've been reading the Economist since high school and it seems to me they've become more "American-centric", with feature after feature on US domestic crises and policy, while curtailing reporting on EU microeconomic issues. One of the hallmarks of this biweekly had been its global analyses of international economics/politics from a distinctly neo-conservative British point of view. Lately for me, it seems to have lost its "edge" and its articles are indistinguishable from the NY Times or WSJ.
But despite its shortcomings, what other magazine can drill into your mind phrases like: Schumpeterian, creative destructivism, moral hazard, and the holy Big Mac Index!
Don't forget, that you're (I'm assuming) reading the American edition, which will naturally have more American content. The British edition does have more Euro- and UK-centered news stories, all of which are available on their website to subscribers.
As for The Economist becoming more leftist, I think they're actually pretty politically consistant ... it's just that the US has moved so far rightward that what passed for the center 30 years ago is downright far left today.
To those who were comparing with the student deal, if you buy this subscription with dealpass GC's its a better deal. Your cost basis would be ~78.40 (after 20% GC discount) with a $20 rebate (cost of buying a $25 Amazon gift card). Leaving a year subscription to be $58.40, which is a hot deal.
bigworld said: dead deal as of today. Hope they offer it again -- looking for a cheap way to subscribe to this. Next to impossible.
Thank for bringing up this thread again, and of course, thanks to the OP as well. I just started my subscription Looking forward to a year of quality reading material.
