But...when the wife and I went there to celebrate her birthday, my wife's buffet was free rather than giving us the "certificate" for a future visit.

Macoroni Gril is the place to go for your birthday. I am not aware of free food offerings, but what they do for you is get an OPERA singer (who happens to work there) to sing "Happy Birthday" in Italian (i think)... pretty cool

At Hooter's Resturaunts, on your birthday they have you stand on a stool and all the Hooter Girls stand around the stool below you, and sing. It's good for a laugh, even if its not your birthday...I've never seen an instance where they ask for ID.

Charlie Browns Restaurants in NJ have a "Handshake Club" - I think you get a free meal for your birthday or something.

I went to Benihanas for my birthday (City of Industry, CA) last year and I didn't get a free meal, do you have to request it?
