the ad specifically states there is a shipping and handling charge. you configure the computer in store, the computer is made in china and shipped to you

for this price, I'd rather get a similar cheap Dell.
A Dell B110 with all in one printer is the cheapest combo that compares and it is $452 with shipping and tax and the main difference I saw was the Dell had dvd. My state sales tax is 8% (of $430) and shipping $79 so my total comes to $215 not $240 +

AND $120 MORE WITHOUT MONITOR AND PRINTER.
It's $80 more last nite. Everyone of us here, and including you, have tons of FAR printers stockpiled in our garage, so no need for a printer. Monitor is still CRT, use as a paper weight, and can't Fleabay either. Therefore, the SR1620NX is still a better deal, IMHO. AND NO REBATES!

Also, the Compaq you reference is refurbished, this is not. Some don't have the FAR printers, and I don't see whats worng with a CRT, other than size and weight - they do the job just fine for most uses, except saving space.

CRTs produce more eyestrain and fatigure. They cook your eyeballs literally while you're using them. I will never buy another CRT and I'm depressed that I can't afford an LCD tv for same reason.

True...I should have mentioned that. But the more recent CRT have antiglare coatings to help somewhat. If using a computer all day, then LCD all the way, but for someone who uses it occasionally, CRT would suffice.

Oh, really? They literally cook your eyeballs? Literally, eh?
Somehow my cooked eyeballs seem to see things just fine.
This is a system for someone who is trying to get a complete setup on a cheap. And to me it looks like a pretty well balanced system and a good value, except for shipping ripoff. CRT and all...
xtrabad said: I suppose most of us FWers also have extra HD, RAM, etc. lying around that could be used to further upgrade this setup for little or no extra cost.
Well, the motherboard has 2 DDR2 slots, so it's not as easily upgradable as the Compaq AMD based systems with 4 DDR slots.

I dunno about that - provided the refresh rate is dialed above 60Hz, a CRT can be easy on the eyes. But many people don't know about refresh rate, and live with the extreme eyestrain of a CRT running at 60Hz.
On another topic in this thread, I am still surprised that people are so antsy about the Compaq '1620 being a refurbished unit. Those who snagged that deal yesterday did well. The key is that it is a loaded-up entry PC vs. this PC that is a stripper. I've dealt with refurb Compaqs before, and you can't tell them from new.
I'll agree that this is a hot deal for those who want a basic system, as the options are expensive. But most people can find a decent deal on DDR2 RAM to run the memory up, and the HP will accept a common DVD burner (after all, this HP and the Compaq share the same chassis). Look at it this way, here is a killer deal on a basic back-to-school system that does what is needed. Okay it has a CRT monitor, and the printer is kinda basic, and it lacks RAM... but out of the box, it will surf the net and do any homework that any college level course can dish out. Add another strip of RAM, and it'll run great.
BTW I do recommend that if you order one, spend an extra $11 for the optical mouse and multimedia keyboard. A combo drive is only $20 more if you want to watch DVDs - or you can add one for cheap next time Staples has a blowout. If you want a LCD monitor, FeeBay the Compaq one (which has the speakers in the box BTW) for around $50 plus shipping (remember, the box is oversize for UPS, so don't short yourself) and snag a deal on a 17" LCD. The '1410 printer is surprisingly good for copying, scanning and color prints - add a $50 laser and you've got a nice school system. Add Open Office (unless your college sells MS office for $10-$15) and nuke Nortons/McAfee and install AVG Free.

but if you wait for a Dell deal, you can get a decent dual core system for $350 like I did (E510, 2.8G dualcore, 80gb SATA, ATI, 1GB DDR2 PC2 RAM) a few mos. back.
$240 is decent only if you absolutely can't wait for a Dell deal. Dell boxes are built more conveniently than HP boxes and the E510 has more expandable options. All that makes it worth the extra $100 premium.

You have to stop by OD to order it. Then, HP will ship it to you directly.
Hey Noob, I'll save you the time, it ain't going to happen my friend.
It can happen if and only if you go through OD. If there were an Appeals process and MANY previous cases I would say go for it, BUT with Office Depot being the advertiser of this deal you will definitely have to go through them. It amazes me that in 1997 computers cost ~$3500 to $4000 but today a couple of hundred buck. WOW! I just remembered that I purchased a computer at those prices back then.

I have lot of extras to upgrade this baby; for example, just right now you can get a decent Benq 19" 2ms LCD and a ATI 256mb... video card for $240. If you need HD, memory, DVDRW etc., give it two month and average 1hour/day on FW, you have it all. Will stop by a rebateDepot today, but the thing is, can I show a Dallas newspaper ad to them? Anybody confirm this in other area? PS. please do not trash this deal for CRT, put a brand new box on the curbside, it will disappear before you know it. EOD
So .. anyone know what the shipping/handling charge is going to be? .. Checking it out at the HP store, they charge $49 for Shipping.

Thanks OP! Just placed my order at my local OD (Lawrenceville, GA). They said that due to response, ship time is now 30 BUSINESS days-so about 6 weeks. They also said that they are killing this deal at 5 P.M. today. I'm assuming that is my local store only, but I don't know for sure. This is perfect for dtr starting College in the fall. One more thing off the list!
