you must add a small filler to go above $50. either add batteries or single dvd-r disc both are less than $2. This is the best price ive ever seen online for this player. This is in my opinion is one of the best picture quality divx dvd players available. it plays everything, even xivd files encoded with gmc or qpel(which the old Philips dvp-642 couldnt play). its got a bunch more features i havent tried out yet. Ive been using it for a few days now as a replacement for my old Philips and i love this thing. This seems to go oos pretty quickly(it was oos for like a month or two, it just recently came back in stock at Crutchfield). so i wouldnt wait to long to jump on this.
This indeed does seem to have better playback than the notorious DVP642. It uses Zoran Vaddis chipset ZR-36882 which is far superior to the DVP642 Vibrato set.
However it sadly also has alot of reports of problems with DVD+R playback. Can you confirm this?
Thank you. I've just bought one. This DVD player is what i need. Good deal

How does the divx and xvid format compatibility of this compare to the Philips DVP5960 (which is $30 more)? I don't really care about the HDMI or upscaling on the Philips player, since I don't plan on getting an HDTV soon. The USB port on the DVP5960 is a nice bonus, but if the Toshiba can handle all the same files, I'd rather save $30.

vibe: havent noticed any problems with dvd+r playback, however both my burners have bitsetting. i have heard from a few reviews that this player is a little picky when it comes to media. ive been playing xvid files on Staples dvd+r(CMC media code) and no problems.
RotJ: unless you plan in using the usb feature on the Philips DVP5960, get the Toshiba cause it'll handle all the same files. i would even bet the Toshiba has better picture too. cause the Philips dvp642 was awful picture quality.

Thanks Dave316. I'm in for one. I used the $2.49 DVD+RW as filler.

So I checked videohelp.com
Here are some negs about this player: Won't play files larger than 720x480 (this affects at least 19 files in my collection) .srt subtitles placed too high on the screen? (this affects about 30 of my files)
Hmm. I'm considering canceling this order.
edit: Vibe tells me "There is only one divx chipset in existance that can play higher than 720x480 and those players START at $200". I guess I'll wait for it to ship and see what the subtitles look like.
sunmountain said: Just my 2 cents. At the similar price or maybe $10 more, you get a DVD+DivX player from WalMart, which usually means better return or exchange policy.
Let me add my 2 cents here I would disagree WalMart's return/exchange policy is better. Well, I guess depends on your local WalMart. I have a few WalMart near me, one of them's lowly paid customer service refuse electronic product return after I bought a MP3 player from them that stopped working after a week or so. They told me I can't return to them, go deal with the manfacturer (which defeats the point buying locally).
Long story short, I drove to anothe WalMart, and they return/exchange for me. I heard similar stories on BB too..so it's not exclusive to WalMart only. But I just don't think WalMart's return/exchange policy is better because their policy can be as 'cheap' too.

Wal-Mart returns have gone pretty smoothly for me.
However, Crutchfield pays for your return shipping and there's no restocking fee if you ship everything back in the original packaging. So it's not any worse than Wal-Mart.
Ah I didn't know Crutchfield pays return shipping, that is pretty cool. I'll keep that in mind next time I buy elect. product.
I dunno if I want to jump on this deal, not because return policy, but I spent too much browsing deal forums and spend a little much already. I think I'll wait until next month, otherwise my CC statement is ahhhh not fun to look at...

Had the Philips dvp5960 for about 1 week now. Overall I give it a "B" grade. I'm running with HDMI...good thing about that is that it runs both Audio and Video. Picture Quaility is great; plays all the dixv and xvids I have...mostly anime and TV downloads. There is a delay when the dvd drive ejects and loads. The USB port is GREAT! I don't have to burn a CD/DVD to watch it, just load it up on a 1GB SD and use a memory card reader.
It suppose to be compatibly with external HD...but it's picky...it doesn't support my Acomdata one. It would be nice to have it work with an external HD...then you wouldn't really need your comp. I would usually run the divx/xvid with my computer and have it dual screen up to my tv. But my room would get hot from the heat of the computer (prescott).

Doesn't mean much to many, but it has no optical output.
Where do you enter the coupon code? "Special offer or catalog code"? It wouldn't take it when I put it there. I don't see any where else before submitting the order for coupons either. Most Crutchfield coupons require at least $50, with this player being $49.99, perhaps that's the problem?

I have this player and found that it doesn't play divx files on dvd-r reliably, particularly if there are several files on the DVD. The same file would sometimes play all the way through, sometimes play a little and freeze, or not even load. I never found an acceptable solution to this problem. The Toshiba CSR said to unplug the player and try again, this sometimes worked but in general, it was quite frustrating to spend 15 minutes trying to get a file to load and play and then freeze. I bought this from Newegg and could not return it. Bought an tried another one from Sears and had the same problem, so I returned that one. It is fine for playing regular DVDs though. BTW, I have the LG ldx514 and that plays the files without any problems.
From a price perspective it's a good deal. The Amaszon reviews are split between great and horrible!
I've always had good luck with Toshiba. So who knows. My big problem has been JVC. No matter what I buy, it breaks within 6 mos to a yr.
i think Im going to spend a little more and get the Sony upconverting DVP-NS75H. With all the Fat Wallet magic, it can be had for around $70 to $80. It's also gotten rave reviews across the spectrum.

I think I'll pass on this aswell..I'm tempted to get it to replace my Norcent dp-220 divx dvd player, but all the little discrepencies with this player are pushing me away from it. I'd definately pick it up if I didn't have a divx player though.

Long thread on how to get external USB drives working with the Philips. Some quotes "I was able to get my external hard drive to work. The drive is actually a maxtor 80gb usb drive. I replaced the drive with a 300gb maxtor 7200 drive.
I used swissknife to create one huge fat 32 partition and then I threw all my divx files on there.
As soon as I hit the USB button on my remote my drive showed up! I get no stuttering at all. I was having all types of stuttering and freezing up when I burned these files to dvd discs but playing them through the drive is really smooth. "
"1. Make sure your drive is formatted FAT32. For drives larger than 32GB use this tool: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm 2. If your drive needs external power, make sure it is powered up and ready to go BEFORE plugging it into the DVP-5960. "
thats very good tips, but it still doesnt work with some enclosures. i think someone mentioned that if drive comes up as a removeable drive in XP, it will probably work with phillips. my iogear ion drive didnt work, but i had a mediacard reader+HD combo drive that comes up as "disk drive" in xp but works just fine with phillips. plus even the card-reader part works!! so it can read from drive or card reader. makes the card-reader+drive combo totally worth FW-deal. very happy with phillips but mighty tempted for this as well. y'all know how it is. and i have 3-4 divx players. but seriously i am thinking of getting another phillips instead of this, just for the hard-drive convenience.HDMI-upconversion is a good bonus.

Just reminiscing.Whoa. Not at all. DivX was founded in 2000. the Divx was a different company i believe that was owned by CC.

WalMart's return policy is black-and-white written and posted at their service area. Clearly the customer service you dealt with was incompetent and did not know enough of their own policy. This is nothing unusual in a B&M store - at one time a Sam's Club employee told me I could only return their mechandise within 30 days which was of course non-sense. In such case I would either ask for his/her supervisor/manager, or simply go to another store if I'm not in a confrontation mode.
Can it watch divx burned onto dvdr? it only says it will work with cdr on the website.

Just reminiscing.Whoa. Not at all. DivX was founded in 2000. the Divx was a different company i believe that was owned by CC.I'm pretty sure the DivX codec was named after Circuit City's colossal failure, as a tongue-in-cheek reference. It was originally called "DivX " (pretend that emoticon didn't automatically get converted to an icon), after all.
Received mine on Friday.... Tried AVI, MPEG, DixX movies recorded on DVD-R, DVD-RW... works great!!!.... doing fast-forward and stopping it at a particular point is a issue, but not for all movies. ...... FF in AVI movies was fine, but with MPEG movies it skips a lot (this could be a premature evaluation) ....
Overall, I am pretty happy with this player... Thanks OP
