Thanks...... I didn't really need the third drive, but these are so fast and cheap!

damn, i already bought two the other day for $95, but I forgot about the code.

What's the advatage of PRT over the regular stuff?

Just bought two (two separate orders so I could use the code twice).

Just received a new Dell 9150 with an 80gb drive in it. Now I just have to figure if I'll start my new system off with 2 320gb's separate or as RAID 0 or 1. hmmmm

isn't the perpendicular drive use to be around $400 when it first came out last year? since when did it fall under $100 for 320gb

Thanks in for one. Almost bought it the other day without the coupon.

Im on the fence still. If they dropped it to $85 then I'd surely jump.

got one as well. thanks OP!

does this hard drive reuire a special motherboard?

bestco said: does this hard drive reuire a special motherboard?

Any motherboard that supports SATA/150. There is a jumper on the drive to switch between SATA/150 and SATA/300, and perpendicular recording doesn't require a special controller.

anyone know where to pick a good enclosure for this HD?
Thanks.

Based on what I understand, you need less hardware to store same number of bytes. That means, this is more advantageous to makers and has much less to do with end user. So, it should be even cheaper.
Can someone explain me what advantage as an hard drive user do I have with this Perpendicular technology? I see advantages only for hard drive maker. Please correct me, if I am wrong.

im new to this technology, but the manufactures claim that this new tech lowers the chance of having corrupt data.

According to NoMoneyInMyWallet's link,

One of the key challenges facing the hard drive industry is overcoming the constraints imposed by the superparamagnetic effect, which occurs when the microscopic magnetic grains on the disk become so tiny that they interfere with one another, thus losing their ability to hold their magnetic orientations. The result is “flipped bits” – bits whose magnetic north and south poles suddenly and spontaneously reverse – that corrupt data, rendering it and the storage device unreliable and thus unusable.

New technology is always more expensive in the beginning. Since you need new production lines to take advantage of the new technology. Prices will drop when new production lines are up and old production lines are getting old, too expensive to repair, thusly being scrapped.

Finally bought one. Wow what a difference $5 makes

Here's how this drive sounds for those curious.

This isn't low priced, but Adaptec makes quality hardware and compatibility's guaranteed. By way of a Froogle search, I found and ordered this enclosure from Provantage:

Adaptec ACS 300 Enclosure at Provantage

Cost breakdown:

89.99 shipped and AC for the drive from NewEgg
72.69 shipped for the enclosure from ProVantage
(25.00) Enclosure MIR from ProVantage that may or may not arrive--it's f______g Parago)

Cost per GB = ~ 0.43 lukewarm for a high-performance HD with a 5-year warranty.

Cheers,
~tdr.

You might check out a couple threads over at storagereview before you pick up this drive. I havn't tested one myself yet but i hear that they are pretty loud in comparison to other drives.

For a comparison wouldn't we need to have a sound recording for the 7200.10 as well?

what is the speed difference between SATA 2 and IDE. REALWORLD difference, not some theoretical numbers please.

....get per-pen-di-cu-lar-alar!!

thanks OP

hah, i love that perpedicular song

I only have an SATA I compatible motherboard. Will this work on that motherboard or does it require an SATA II mobo?

rhart00 said: I only have an SATA I compatible motherboard. Will this work on that motherboard or does it require an SATA II mobo?

yes it will work. from what ive heard theres no noticable diff between SATA I and SATA II, yet, anyways.

ranova said: what is the speed difference between SATA 2 and IDE. REALWORLD difference, not some theoretical numbers please.

I got SG 200GB ATA drive as well as SG 300gb SATA 2.0 driver(300ATA speed version). I was expecting 3 times performance gain. However it is not actually even 25% gain. Yes buffer read (i.e. in these drive it is 16MB) has better gain, still not double or tripple. I installed new OS on this drive. I don't see much performance gain. Super pi calculation and 3DMarks result is same.

Note: mine is 7200.9 not 7200.10 i.e I don't have PRT, however Seagate says it is ATA300 Speed, which is same for 7200.10 too. So I don't expect 7200.10 would be great gain.

It will be good if someone can share their result with 7200.10. You can get PC-Wizard from http://www.cpuid.com/

SATA drive speed: 300ATA 7200.9
======================
Sequential Write : 44.98 MB/s
Sequential Read : 48.33 MB/s
Buffered Write : 96.69 MB/s
Buffered Read : 117.56 MB/s

Rerun
Sequential Write : 46.70 MB/s
Sequential Read : 51.15 MB/s
Buffered Write : 96.33 MB/s
Buffered Read : 117.59 MB/s

ATA Drive
=========
Sequential Write : 30.84 MB/s
Sequential Read : 50.52 MB/s
Buffered Write : 83.84 MB/s
Buffered Read : 81.00 MB/s

Rerun
Sequential Write : 34.77 MB/s
Sequential Read : 49.65 MB/s
Buffered Write : 83.69 MB/s
Buffered Read : 81.21 MB/s

Buffer read:60Mbyte/seconds

I used PC-Wizard to test

thanks netphillac. So unless youre running tests or extracting big files, the difference between SATA and IDE isnt noticable?

I just bought the Dell Dimension 9150. how do I check to see if this HDD is compatible with my system?

Wow sidewinder..... that sounds pretty loud for a hard drive.
Maybe its radio active.

Thanks for the link.

i have the IDE version of this seagate 7200.10 PD, and its the quietest drive I have ever had. Not sure about the SATA version.

Could the "Get perpendicular" video look / sound much more like a Schoolhouse Rock ripoff?
When it first started, all I could see what "I'm Just A Bill" - instead of "I'm just a bit"?

Does this SATA2 drive requires a different cable other than regular SATA cable?
Like, can I use a regular SATA cable with this SATA 2 drive?

if you check newegg, there are sata 2 cables, but from what Ive heard its just marketing and that you can use SATA1 cables.

I have 2 of these and have yet to hear either of them make any audible sound in my case unlike my noisy raptor.

Did you bench marked these drive with ATA drive? Can you run PC wizard on these drive and let us know the speed gain?

ranova said: thanks netphillac. So unless youre running tests or extracting big files, the difference between SATA and IDE isnt noticable?
I don't think there also I have seen much gain.

The new SATA 7200.9 added extra noise. I never used to notice hard drive noise with ATA SG drives, but now I do hear metal cutting sound. Someone has send the link for that, it is exactly the same.

I'm patiently waiting for the day this guy hits the $100 mark.

December 2007 sounds about right, or possibly the BF sale in 2007.

i've bought a couple of these a month ago for 100 bucks each. The only problem i get now is that I'm getting confused b/w the drives letters on my computer. There are so many of them and it's hard to remember where u stored what
