After placing the order from D3ll for Adaptec enclosure, I was still looking different options and found out this at circuit_city which is pretty decent price for USB 2.0/FireWire combo, not sure about the chipset though. Ultra Mini Portable Hard Drive Enclosure 2 rebates $25 from mfg and $10 from CC for online purchases only. more details -
Ultra Mini Portable Hard Drive Enclosure (ULT31310) ULT ULT31310 • Converts internal drives • Supports 3.5" drives • USB 2.0/FireWire • Built-in fan • Hotswappable • For PC and Mac®
Sounds like it may have some issues. Here's what the only reviewer at CC had to say about it:
"This is made of really cheap plastic. It's junky! And XP wouldn't recognize this... finally set the drive to master and it worked great. (Instructions don't say anything about jumpers). The IDE cable and Power cable are so short that it was almost impossible to hook both. It really took some time to maneuver it. Once together she looks pretty and works great! However I only give it four stars as it is almost impossible to hook up, and the drive gets VERY HOT! Next time I run it the cover will be off. I will get more of these if I can get them for $40 or less... but as cheap as this is made, $25 is all it is worth. But it does work great."

Funny that they still gave it a 4 star rating!
Sounds like the person has no idea what he is doing. In an external enclosure, of course you want to set it to master. He didn't do so and it didn't work. His fault for not knowing what he was doing. When he did it right, it worked.

Good find, OP.. But I already jumped on the adaptec deal from Dell yesterday, otherwise I would consider this one. Haven't seen a USB/firewire combo enclosures this cheap yet.

You may never see that money again.
Are you bashing Onrebate cuz everyone else does, or from experience? From MY experience (about 12 rebates in last 3 months), ALL have been paid quickly with no issues. I think Onrebate is on the up-and-up, and certainly better than some others these days. I personally wouldn't let that be an issue.

I am in need of one of these, but I think I'll do the ADAPTEC version, more confortable with their rebate reports, and their service and support.
As well, I think I prefer metal to fan enclosures, especially when there doesn't seem to be much ventilation on this one.
I'm also going to put the 500GB seagate in there, which this drive enclosure doesn't seem to support.
Good deal, but they probably shouldn't call it "ultra mini portable" since you still have to find a wall socket to plug it in to (not bus powered). Too bad.

Even firewire would have problems spinning up a 3.5" HD on bus power, though The "mini" refers to the form factor being kind of tight; but there are a lot of cheap "tightly-packed" enclosures around now.
This is a good deal for the FW - but I wish it used a standard bridge board that I could have scavenged into an enclosure with more breathing room for air circulation etc. Instead it uses a full-length PCB - kinda like what you usually see in the 2.5" enclosures. Still nice at $15
If the rebate goes thru, then this is a great deal.

It is listed there. I just found it.

Can anybody please tell me where/what's the serial number of this product? Is it on the enclosure or on the box? I can't seem to find it. Thanks!

I don't think there is S/N for this product. Called the rebate center, CSR said just use her ID as Serial#. ID:G0705 name:Wendy. You can try to get one with a call.

email them or call them and get a name. then document or keep the email just in case they try to screw with the rebate. when they do, show them the proof.

i just called them and was told that they're not really strict with s/n. I can simply put "cannot find it" for all they care. I asked if it's ok to put the s/n of the power supply, and was told sure why not.
