The link is OK. But when you click 'Customize and Buy', it doesn't work.

Yeah, it didn't work for me as well when I used Firefox. But it worked fine when I used IE!

This would have been warm a couple months ago...with Merom released a couple days ago I'd say this is a poor buy now. Prices will keep dropping in the next couple of weeks on this type of old stock. This processor is old now! Pentium M < Core Duo < Core 2

Don't forget to select the "Free 512MB Additional Memory" offer after you click "customize and buy". This will be in the first set of choices on the customize page.
Here is my review:
the good: widescreen, 1gb ram, thinkpad, a/b/g, pci-express, xp-pro, only 4.8 lbs, 3yr warranty
the neutral: Pentium-M (yes, it is not the burning hot core duo, but good enough for most regular stuff)
the bad: 4-cell battery, not sxga+ (right?), no dvd burner
No SXGA is a huge negative. Once u go SXGA u never go back.

Not sure what this resolution would be called. It could be SXGA. This one has "1280 x 768" resolution, and it is widescreen 14" diagonal -- what is this called?

Beginning of the year this would have been pretty hot for a think pad with good specs, but I agree with waiting a bit for the price drops.

This laptop with 1 gig of emmory is super fast as it is. What else do you need? All this dual core stuff is a marketing BS Slow down a bit guys ... 95% of us use laptops for just browsing internet and watching movies!!! Dual core ... to run 4 browser windows?

You are forgetting that Merom greatly increases battery life. That is the biggest issue by far!

I do agree with the part where this laptop is fast enough for most.
But the part abt dual core being marketing BS is wrong. Not only will dual core help with multiple applications it will also give superior performance when running newer apps which are smp aware. I use my laptop to watch TV from my slingbox while working on email, word processing etc and dual core would definitely be helpful there.
P.S. I am typing this on my pentium m thinpad X41 and it more than suffices most needs but what many mentioned is correct. with core duo and core 2 duo out this may not be as hot as you think it is especially from a one year down the line standpoint.
I say the deal is cold. Compared to what Dell has to offer this is NOTHING. It's also Pentium-M =/

Lets think about this- 3 year warrenty (value $150?) I love the SD Slot XP Pro $99 value ( My son tells me its worth the money- I don't understand why) Free shipping
No DVD record (Don't think I used it on my notebook yet)
Tell me which Dell - sub 5lbs comes close- in value.
i'm typing this on thinkpad X31 and have no desire to take my HP dv2000t dual core laptop out of the box... 1.6GHz centrino is more than enough as well as 3 hr battery life. how often do most of us need more than 3-4 hours out of laptop battery? a couple of times a year? slingbox works fine on centrino platform as well. this deal is great! i just cant let go my good old X31, they dont make them this good anymore

I ordered the T42 last week from OnSAle for roughly the same price and marginally lower specs.
Should I cancel that and order this one?
What's the physical difference between the two?

I am typing this on my im thinkpad t41.
no it doesnt have the fingerprint reader built in, no its not wuxga, no its not dual core, only a 1.5ghz pentium D but its a great machine.
The dual core and faster pci-e bus would be great for me since i use photoshop and encode videos which normally take a few hours of overnight processing.
While compared to the Dell, i'd say the IBM wins in ergonomica. They keyboard is outstanding and the dimensions are elegant. At the time of purchase, looked at 3 Dell models. All were slightly bulky and had a cheap feel. i suppose thats a bit subjective but i havent looked back after making the switch over to ibm (now lenovo).
I'd be weary of jumping on the dual core bandwagon for the moment after the heated controversy with the USB2/ Dual Core and short battery life Bug or problem if you will. Intel nor microsoft claim responsibility as such, no fixes have been made as far as I am aware. Maybe this is resolved now by the powers that be, however i'd think twice if I were a large portable (battery reliant) user.
Either way, this is a solid machine that the OP has posted. Buy because you can use now... not for what you could possibly have. thanks OP. If i ddint have my thinkpad already, i would definitely consider this one.

I am trying to decide between this deal and the preconfigured one for $929 at:
Is $180 worth it pay for a little faster processor, CD/DVD burner, 80gig HD and 7 cell battery (but 1 year warranty)? Can anyone who has this recommend this laptop? I just ordered the Dell E-1405 and am dissatisfied, so it's going back.
Thanks,
Alex

Very tempting. I think the upgrade is worth $180. Does this one come with free 512mb memory also? If so, it's really not a bad deal despite the shorter warranty.

yup - you can get the 512 upgrade as well, though I am thinking it might be worth to pay $99 for the gig upgrade. You won't save any $, but don't have to go through the hassle of ordering it later and paying shipping. That aside, what do people think about the z60s? I need something small and light but is good quality. The Dell e1405 display was terrible - too much light loss, plus the Dell felt really cheap. Can anyone else attest to the quality/size/performance of the z60s?

The FREE MEMORY IS GONE in 24 HRs. I should have pulled my trigger on day 1. https://www-131.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=-840&storeId=10000001&productId=4611686018425101374&langId=-1&dualCurrId=73
The latest deal you can get with this system is discounted MS Office. It's $100 off, so only $79.
For this box, $749 is a good price.
XP Pro Intel Pentium M Processor 740 (1.73GHz) 512 RAM 60GB HDD CD-RW/DVD-ROM a/b/g wireless IEEE 1394 Firewire & SD Media Reader 3 Year Warranty Under 5 lbs

Looks like the price was lowered by another $50 (this is from the EPP program). I got the same system for my wife today for $699 (Free shipping) + tax. Time to retire my old T23 after all these years.

hi: whats is the EPP program and how come I can't upgrade the drive to a dvd burner? it only let me purchase a whole new drive in addition to the one that come with the laptop. Also, there is no upgrade option for the HD.
I would suggest go for the z60m, its well worth the upgrade.

epp does not allow free 512 mb ram upgrade and 21 days return. not that advantageous imho.

and one more thing to think about with Lenovo... I'm an old Dell fan, always thought Dell was the greatest... well, a recent Dell laptop I had was defective and I've spent HOURS on their chat system trying to get resolution, sending the laptop to them only to have it returned unrepaired. I got a different rep everytime, based overseas and there were language barriers. Sure, I saved a buck, but I am paying the consequences. Now, for my experience with Lenovo I was completely floored. I got my own personal rep with direct contact information including email and phone numbers!! I also got 2 day shipping from Hong Kong for FREE, this is a huge cost to Lenovo (standard rate for 2 day international express is $125 from Hong Kong to USA). Dell is small potatoes compared to Lenovo. On top of that the z60m I got for $873 is a work of art (including Titanium lid!). Great build quality and many better features than Dell includes. My DVD drive has DVD RAM capability, and is removeable for an array of different plugin modules including a slimline drive battery for an add'l 3 hours of battery life.
I'm a ThinkPad convert for sure. You pay a little bit more up front, but you are living in a different world with personalized service, and top notch build quality. Go with Dell to burn a coupon or two, but go with Lenovo if you depend on your computer to deliver consistent and quality performance.
ThinkPad is the best of the best. If you can ever get one via their outlet at these prices, make sure you hop on it, because it is totally worth it.
