Also, most after market systems (again I am not sure about this one)provide more power then what factory speakers can handle. So, you might have to upgrade those as well.
Actually, soldering is quite undesirable in the dash. Wal-Mart sells red screw-on dual connectors, very very effective. The UPC for these is 063561005600. And about the speakers, most factory speakers can handle the power. In fact, many stock stereos have more power than aftermarket ones.
Re. "many stock stereos have more power than aftermarket ones" - you are kidding...Right?
That statement is actually true. Take a car that has the upgraded stereo package (Alpine, Monsoon, Harmon Kardon, Bose, etc) and put it up against one of these no-name inexpensive HU's and it will produce louder and clearer music.
Now if you take that same car and place it up against a Kenwood or JVC HU and aftermarket speakers powered by a dedicated amp, the stock upgraded stereo will get blown out of the water. |

I'm guessing some diligent research or trial and error. |

I bought a MP3 CD car dash player from WalMart about 2 years ago for $89. Never ever again will I ever buy "their" brand crap. I say "their" because they are the only ones that seem to sell it...
It skips constantly (I tried numerous burn speeds and media) on burnt MP3 and CDDA discs, forget about even using CD-RW discs (its skipping it absolutely unbarable). On regular pressed discs its ok, but a lil bump is good enough for it to skip. Also the LED Display is going out (it keeps flashing dim, and yes I checked the splices on the harness).
I know its not the same exact player, but I was like "Wow 89 bucks what a bargain!". Sub-$100 WalMart dash players? Never Again for me. One of those cases where you get what you pay for. |

For those wanting this item,
Serious consideration should bve given to buying this at at TARGET because while there, you can also Use this $2 food Coupon and pick up a bunch of free food.
As i bought this $80 item (target), I also had no trouble picking up nearly $40 in free food.
Since your already spending $80, flying a huge stack of free food coupons by the clerk should be easy...

our local target B&M has these. They had one marked $59.99 so i picked it up for my wife, since she needed a replacement head unit. The cashier gave me the marked price, and it was an easy install. The remot eis mediocre, sound quality is better than the OEM stereo. All in all, $60.00 well spent |

Just thought I'd give my two cents on this deal: If you want a good stereo with a front USB port try CarDomain.com. I have bought two stereos from them in the past and I have not been able to beat their prices. When you buy a stereo from them it comes with the dash kit and wiring harness for free (usually you pay around 40 bucks for these at BB or CC even if they install it for you). You have to ad the wiring harness and the dash kit to your basket before you will see that they are both added for free. Usually free shipping and tax free as well.
Clarion CD/USB port MP3 player on sale for $130 with free dash kit/wiring harness and shipping: http://www.CarDomain.com/item/CLADB365USB
All of their CD/MP3 players: http://www.CarDomain.com/shop/list.pl?type_plural=MP3+Players&x=37&y=15&order=priceasc&start=1&show=67
No name stereos sound bad and have bad user interfaces. Good luck |

The installation kit and wire harness for my civic are so expensive everywhere. Each for $20. I found them at CC, fry's, and also that Crutchfield? I was just plugging the wire in the factory harness and taped them. Factory wire color code: (for 2001 up Honda) GND Black +12 ignite White/Red FL+ Green/Black FL- Green FR+ Green/Yellow FR- Grey/Red RL+ Blue/White RL- Blue RR+ Pink RR- Blue/Yellow +12 Bat Red
The Dimmer wire can't work here because the polarity is reversed from the factory. I talked to the tech at VR3, they said the dimmer does nothing when it's playing, it will be max bright when playing. The remote doesn't work though, they will send me a new one, still waiting. Can't make my 20G harddrive(enclosure with old lap drive) work with it neither, but for flash drive(512) works flawless. Compare to the factory, the buttons are too small! way too hard to reach them, that's why they includes a remote? The radio isn't good as factory. The AM is almost covered in noise. FM is ok. So for me, the best way is to burn several mp3 cds for it.

No name stereos sound bad and have bad user interfaces. Agreed. If you are just buying a headunit to replace your factory one (and not replacing speakers or anything else) the sound quality problem may not be an issue for you. but a bad user interface will affect any buyer.
Slickest way to use a USB capable player is to get a 3.5" external HD enclosure, buy cheap 200 - 400GB HD, get a 12V car adapter for the external drive, and plug it into the head unit.
this 'should' work on 'any' USB head unit, although the UI of the player has to support that many files/folders/etc.
I do know the kenwood players w/ USB can support this. not sure about an el-cheapo like this though.
but even if you are not going huge, anything more than 200 songs per storage device needs to have a GOOD interface. read reviews. check the users manual. etc. (google is your friend) BEFORE buying!
a better search on car-domain http://search.CarDomain.com/?query=usb%20mp3%20receiver = 15 results ($130 - $500) |

I went bought another one, the first one's face plate has problem, so the remote doesn't work. I changed face, and it works fine. Their quality vary a lot, the first face plate has significent alignment mismatch. And the IR receiver had burnt down. I'll return the bad one. But other than that, I like it, made my life easier than use iPod + cassette adepter on my civic |

I got one of these at Target a couple weeks ago for $80. It is very nice for the price.
Those hooking up a sub woofer: There is a "Sub Woofer On/Off" setting in the menu. I hooked my amp up at least 3 times before finding it, I kept thinking that the amp inputs were bad. |

I see alot of posts slamming this deal, so I wanted to contribute my $0.02.
I purchased the Virtual Reality Sound stereo from WalMart for $80. It's the only unit I could find in this price range that offers an SD card slot and an 1/8" Aux input. The 1/8" jack lets me plug my mp3 player right into the unit, but better yet, the SD card slot lets me transport music from my pc to my car stereo in just a couple of clicks! Fantastic! I like the blue color scheme of the unit, and I LOVE the way the song title and artist scroll across the screen when in Memory Card mode.
And if you don't wanna reach over to the unit, it comes with a remote control.
For the detractors out there...good luck finding these features elsewhere for this price.
The unit was a snap to install too. As for sound, I would give it an 8/10 using my factory (Chevy) sound system. This unit replaced an older Alpine unit, and I would say the Alpine sounded only slightly better. I listen with the treble on Max and the bass on 70%, with the Loud (boost) always on. This is a typical setting for Rock music. I think the unit sounds great...the only critique is that the highs could be a little brighter. However, this is often a SPEAKER deficiency in many cars.
I can't comment on reliability, since it's only been installed for 2 weeks. But I can say that I've already gotten much enjoyment from this purchase.
For a link to the exact unit I'm referring to, click below and scroll down to the VRCD400SDU...

On sale this week at Target $67.00. Picked one up for son for Christmas. Those that have had this a while now, what do you think? Happy with it, hate it, had to return, etc. Any reviews from those that bought it would be great. |

I bought one of these from WalMart about 2 months ago. It is buggy. It does not read all of the tracks properly on my SD card, and the USB won't work at all with my wife's Creative mp3 flash player (1gb - it should work but doesn't). Lately, it has suddenly stopped reading the CD, and then locks up and won't respond to commands. Eventually it comes back to life on its own, or I can take the front panel off and reboot. But even the CD player has been flakey. Sound quality is fine. I would not buy it again, knowing what I know now. |
