According to their sales flyer, the week of Sept 3 to Sept 9 Best Buy is selling the 500 gb Western Digital internal SATA 2 drive for $159 out the door. If you have one of the 10% off coupons Best Buy sent out and can get a CSR to do a override you can get it for $143.99. And if you are extremely lucky you can get a CSR to do a override for the 30% off computer accessories coupon in the Back to School coupon book and get the drive for 111.99. Highly YMMV for the use of coupons as internal hard drives arent listed as one of the eligible items for the coupons.
Correction: The WD5000KSRTL drive only has a 1 one year warranty because its a retail drive. The OEM drives come with 3 year warranties.
This drive was on sale at CompUSA 2 weeks ago for $199 after $30 rebate. Time for a price match.

IIRC, the WD retail drives only have a 1 year warranty. The OEM drives carry a 3-year warranty. You may want to verify the warranty on the box if this is important to you.

Despite the 1 year warranty has anyone had problems with WD drives? I use dells and never had a problem with their WD drives that came with the computers. In the past I've added Maxtor drives and all of them eventually crashed. Fortunately maxtor has been bought by seagate. Furthermore, I use a seagate that i put into an external enclosure and have had no problems. By the way are the SATA 2 more reliable than IDE? Just trying to decide if this drive is worth it. Obviously, data protection is important.

That may be true, but my question really is: if seagate is confident enough to offer a 5 yr warranty while WD only only offers 1yr, does that translate to Seagate producing better drives? Or does it just mean that WD makes good drives but doesn't want to offer a 5 yr warranty. Ultimately, the warranty doesn't really matter much if you lose your data. If you lose your data its a hassle and avoiding that situation is ideal.
it's a decent deal if you can get the coupon or got gift card to spend, with tax it probably comes to around 160ish. On newegg, you do get the HD for 189.99 and that carries 3 year warranty, slightly more expensive, but if you do'nt get charge tax and want more warranty, it's not too bad

I've probably used every brand on hard drive since the late 80's. The only brand I ever had repeated problems with were Quantum hard drives. I've had drive failures from all the manufacturers. I usually lose a drive every two years for whatever reason. I leave my computers on all the time so I can't say how if one drive brand handles daily power cycling better than another. I also tend to upgrade my hard drives every two years for size or performance reasons.
With that said, I feel WD, Maxtor and Seagate drives are all good quality and can expect them to be trouble free for about three years. I think the 5 year is mostly a marketing ploy in that it instills user confidence but the are betting the user forgets or doesn't bother filing a warranty claim. If your 500GB drive fails in 4 and half years and the 10TB drives are $100 new at Best Circuits Depot what are you likely to do?
Anyway, the last drive that I had fail was a Seagate with a 5 year warranty. The sata connector snapped off when I disconnected the drive making connection impossible. It wasn't covered because it was deemed "abuse".

WD makes only One WD5000KS, the quality of the ones with 3yr vs 1yr warranty is identical. If a disk drives is going to fail in almost every case it happens immediately, not after 10 or 11 months of use
