I'm not going to praise this.
Some will understand the 'no praise' stance. Some won't. I don't want/need to explain.

I didn't like this new star rating system either. But I still think the older rating system could be vastly improved upon to help people sifting through deals in order to find the better deals more quickly!
As I said in the original thread, and which may have been stated before, I don't know as I wasn't about to read through the entire old thread, but to me the best system is to show 3 different bars next to each deal posted (there's plenty of room for 3 bars in the rating column, one under the other) ... a RED, a GREEN, and an AVERAGE bar showing the average between both RED & GREEN votes! This way we can sort by GREEN and still have those voted with a lot of RED still show at the top of the sort! Or we could sort by the AVERAGE rating, and therefore be able to sort in order of the actual total voting of a deal's worth according to everyones vote!
For instance, even if I sorted the deals according to GREEN ratings, I might see a potential great deal which 100 people GREENED, yet just below the GREEN bar it would show 200 people actually gave the same deal RED, so at least I would be able to immediately see that so many people thought the deal was bad because the RED bar would be right under the GREEN bar showing that contrast, even if it had a large amount of GREEN given and was at the top of the GREEN sorted deal list.
Having an AVERAGE bar will show the GREEN vs RED ratings immediately as well. If there are more negative, then the AVERAGE bar will show as RED and give the number rating just as the old method, and if there are more GREEN, then it will be colored GREEN and once again show the number rating just like the old method used to.
This to me is a good compromise for everyone. It will allow all votes, both negative and positive, and allow us to sort by total GREEN or total AVERAGE. |

Kudos to you Tim and your staff for being mature enough to KNOW when you have made a mistake AND being adult enough to admit it!
Good to have the "Not Interested" button integrated into the OLD SYSTEM.
Thanks to all. |

This does not deserve praise. It deserves admonishment at most.
Note that we never did hear a reason why it was changed in the first place. |

I think the "not interested" function will be great.
So no matter how painful the last 24 hours have been, something positive has come out of this! |

What about the rating power...? Will everyone have a power of 1? |

Thank you!!
As an aside, why not have color represent how a user rates a posting, and the size of the bar represent how the communinity feels? |

Do members have to post if they are going to red flag something?
Have you implemented a way to stop members who only vote negative, or members who are interested in 'hiding' good deals through using negative votes?
LOVE the 'not interested', very, very helpful. |

I shall quote from the email that requested the change. (no, it wasn't me that wrote it, but as president/ceo, it is my ultimate responsibility)
Here's some rationale.
Eliminate the option to vote negative. * Eliminates fights and confusion brought on by users negging each other. * Prevents users from trying to hide great deals by negging them. * Ends voting abuse as we know it.
Set default ratings filter to All Messages. * Less confusion about "missing/hidden" posts. * With 24/7 moderation we don't need to leave post-hiding in the hands of our community.
Q - How will I filter the messages I don't want to see? A - The ratings system was never intended for individual filtering (my negative will take this below average for MY personal filtering... which inadvertently affects the whole community). Filters can still be set to see only what the community deems are good/better/best posts.
Q - How can I "leave my negative mark" on a post now? A - There are a myriad of reasons a post may be viewed as negative. From now on either move on, mod alert inappropriate posts, or comment in the thread why something is "bad/negative."
we made a mistake, we learned from it and it won't happen again. |

This would be a great enhancement. If the FW team can do it, awesome! However, I will still be happy if they just keep the good ol' +/- system.
Thanks for listening to our feedbacks, FW staffs! |

Just wanted to say thanks. You know, I never knew how dependent I was on the rating system until I reflected on the honest hopelessness I felt after I couldn't refresh the page enough times to get the bars back. It was an honest effort, but the only thing keeping me at distance from SD is their inadequate thumbs up thumbs down system. |
