Fry's has Myguide Typhoon 3240 GPS for $249.99. Outpost price is still $349.

wow. if I had known this one will drop 100 in price. I would have gotten this one instead of 3050 from outpost.

Also have many others. Maybe best value (I base this on eBay prices, though I don't recommend any for resale; Just noting what market value prices are) might be the Sony NV-U70.

4554307 Navone 4500 GPS 549.99
4864980 Navman ICN 750 In-Car Portable Navigation 499.99
4796609 Myguide Typhoon 3240 GPS 249.99 (as noted by OP)
4302285 Lowrance Iway 500C Handheld GPS 579.99 - 100 MIR = 479.99
4768209 Sony NV-U70 Portable Car Navigation 349.99
4603098 Navman ICN 550 GPS 329.99

my order for the 3050 last time was backordered so i cancelled it. Went to fry's today and picked this bad boy up and looks and feels pretty damn good so far. im impressed!

btw... i also saw 4 of the 3050's from last week returned, open box. anyone have any experience with the 3240 to share? things to check? things to look out for? thanks

Frys in atlanta only had open boxed units.. Bought 1,, well bought one = no gps lock,,, bought #2== DOA... Number 3 seems to be working!!! Kinda hard to read hwy numbers on the display..

I also see this one in the TX ad.

Clarion NICE P200 system.
$800 - $400 instant off = $400.

Crutchfield has it for $800.

Clarion can also store movies, MP3 and pics on it. It is GPS as well as in car entertainment system.

No SD Card slot for the Sony NV-U70, so if you're planning on using it outside of US then you might have some issues.

hi, i grabbed one open box but the software doesn't look anything like the screenshots on the website. Did anyone here bought one and did yours have the new software? thanks much.

Cat,
I just returned from Fry's in Downers Grove, IL.
I too, picked up an open box unit.
I paid $212.49.

The CD's I got are...
1) The application CD has a white label reading 3200 GO W/Active Sync 3.7.1, User Manual.

2) is a black label CD reading MYGUIDE 3240 GO NAVIGATION SOFTWARE.

Hope this helps.

BTW, Is this suppose to come with a SD Card??
My unit has what looks like an all black dummy card (no exposed circuitry) No label or anything ????????

I actually like my Magellan Roadmate 300 more. I tested both unit (side by side) on my way home entering identical routes. I hate the way the 3240 displays the street names when you slow down but when you speed up, they are invisible. And, my Roadmate was actually more direct. The 3240 passed up the tollway and gave me a few wrong directions when I was withing a mile from home.

This might be a no-go in the Bay Area. The Frys in Fremont had it for $349 still.

Thanks, you just saved me a trip to Frys

Thanks for the info Jes, $212 is a really good deal. I paid $249 plus tax at a fry's in Concord (near San Francisco). All I got was a Black CD. Don't really need active sync so missing the other cd is not a problem. However, GUI layout of the one I got is not a intuitive as the screenshots on the web site. I especially hate the keyboard layout. The screenshot shows qwerty, mine is just abcdefg.... so I am pretty sure I am not running the latest software. It doesn't come with a card though. Mine had the dummy slot filler too.

As for the post about the Fremont Fry's. I went there too and the guy gave me a line about how the $249 is for open box only blah blah blah. Anyway, didn't want to argue since he said he didn't have any left anyway.

This is San Jose Mercury News Friday ad, suppose to be good at all Bay Area Fry's until 9/19. Did you ring it up at the checkout counter?

Cat,
I agree. My unit layout does not resemble the screenshots from the Myguide website either.
I hoped this one would play photo's like the other Myguide gps.

I did find out that the unit does not come with a working SD card.
The one that comes with it is a dummy card so that nothing falls into the SD slot.

I might just return mine as I really like my Roadmate 300.

Just my two cents.

Jes

Cat and Jes1 -
I too got an open box one from Fry's (oxnard) for $249.

The software does NOT match the website. I think we have MyGuide 5.5 and the website shows 6.0.

I am pretty happy, but this is my first GPS and I am easy to please.
I was going to give a call to customer service to check into updating the software.

NO SD card w/ mine. NO big deal cuz they are super cheap anyways.

Software isn't perfect, but it seems to get me from A to B. I don't like the POI search, as there is no way to enter the city/zip of the POI. So you have to do a lot of scrolling. The voice directions are nice, no spoken street names but you can clearly see the name on the top of the screen and the lady gives you a lot of warning before a turn.

I mostly worry about updating the maps. The support on the web seems quite poor.

Any one else have opinions???
-B

Brian,
Please make sure you keep us informed if you call regarding a software update.
My software reads... MyGuide Mapmaker V3.3.01

What does everyone elses read?????

TIA,

Jes

When I install the software on the cd it says Mapmaker 3.2.1. I am more concern about getting the Myguide 6.0 instead of the one we have now. Not sure if it's user upgradeable or do we have to send it back. Usually for gps we get free update for one year but the website sure is lacking in information.

Well, my unit just bit the dust.
I was using the Sync software and was unable to connect. So, I turned the GPS off and back on. It then took me to a Wince menu with various options. Not knowing what to do, I simply pressed the reset button on the side and it cut off. Now, it lights up for a moment when you power it on using the off/on bottom and no display.

Boy, do I really like my Roadmate 300 now!

Nope, didn't do that, the card was at the GPS and another shopper asked if there were any GPS on sale. The salesman pointed to the Myguide 3050, which was priced at $299 and said that was the one, but they were out of stock. So I guess two people got duped!

Brian, Jes, Cat,

I picked up a unit at the Fry's in Tempe, AZ and was able to score a brand new one that wasn't opened or returned. However, it's the same deal as all of yours... seems to be running some older firmware than the Myguide 6.0 shown on the website. It's missing advertised features such Photoviewer, 4 games, and the cool looking interface. I emailed tech support about it late friday night so hopefully they'll email me back tomorrow. Brian, please let me know if you do call in and get an answer from them. I'll post if i find anything out. Thanks!

By the way... does anyone know how to list the itinerary once you've planned a route (such as showing ALL turns/directions to take rather than just what's coming up next)?? My friend has the Myguide 3050 and that has the Itinerary feature but i can't seem to find it on the 3240. Please let me know!

My main gripe is with the road name search... if i type river drive i get no results, However it i type river dr. it finds it.... HUMMM ALso is it possible to search POI's???

I just found out my unit was switched and returned.
I though the WinCe label on the bottom of the unit looked worn. Since I didn't see a serial # label on the box, I assumed it was the original unit. Well, just now I noticed the serial on the inner side of the box.
The serial numbers don't match.

D*mn! D*mn! D*mn! D*mn!

And, I spent about $15.00 in gas and tolls to get to the store yesterday.

I'm pissed!!!

Hi all, I got an email back regarding the old firmware and this is what I got.

"The one shown on the www.myguidegps.com website is the European model with
the new firmware the US model has the older software."

I will try to get more info but since he didn't offer to get me the new firmware I am thinking the prospect is not good. Will probably have to return this unit if I can't get an upgrade.

The way I get around that is to just type in "river" and pick the right one in the search results. Works better then try to guess if the database contains "drive" or "dr" or some other variations.

Sorry to hear that Jes. Athough I am not surprised since this is Fry's. At least you only went to one. I went to three of them before I found mine and I may just return it anyway.

Just letting you know that upgrading the 3240 to the latest software makes it identical to the
3050.

So might as well buy the 3050 cuz there is no difference.

thanks for the info on the upgrade cat. Hopefully they'll give us some options here cuz i actually kind of like the unit... it'd be a shame to lose out on all the other features.

I kinda like the internal antenna of the 3240 and the built-in flash rom for the maps. That leave the SD slot for other things. On the 3050 I've heard some people have had problems with the SD card and since the maps are on the card that will leave the GPS useless until you can get a new card. A few minor hardware differences but I'd rather have the 3240 instead of the 3050 if I can get the new software. On that note, I've heard back from tech support and they're looking into getting us the new firmware. Lets hope for some good news.

I just sent off an email to tech support too, asking where the advertised features were. I'm hoping that the more people that show interest in getting their 3240 upgraded, the better. Kinda silly that the $100 cheaper model has newer software on it.

So, if everyone here spent a couple minutes on an email to tech support, it might improve our chances of getting a firmware upgrade. I sent mine to the USA address:

Cat - that's great! i really do hope they can get us the new firmware! please keep all of us posted on this if you find anything out!

Russ - Good thinkin, i sent them an email a couple days ago but havent heard back yet. Hopefully they'll give more info to Cat since they seem to responding. In the mean time, i'll email them again tomorrow or the next day if i havent received a reply

In order to upgrade it to the latest software, you will need the same 3050 SD card to be always inserted in order for it to work.

Just like the 3050.

wow, that would kinda suck. but you do make a good point since it'd be the same firmware as the 3050. hopefully we'll hear from tech support soon.

I don't think that is the case though. for that to be true the assumption has to be that the firmware for myguide 6.0 is much larger than the built-in 64mb rom. even if it's much larger, since it only requires 270mb for the us west maps, that still leaves over 200mb on the flash memory for use. I based this on the fact that the 3050 has 32mb rom and 64mb flash. the maps and software for the 3050 reside on the SD card. and since SD is just a removeable version of flash memory, there is no reason why you can't load the software on the built-in flash memory of the 3240. I am not an expert though. Just my opinion.

e-mail sent... waiting....waiting....

OK, to settle all this back and forth between the 3050 or 3240, I went out and bought a 3050 and set both up on my dash for a side by side comparison. It's just a quick observation so here it is:
Hardware:
Screen...3240 is brighter, 3050 has more colors, nicer looking (for practical purposes I am leaning toward the 3240, easier to see in sunlight).
Size.....same, 3240 has an internal antenna so it's a plus.
Controls...3050 is better here since it has external controls for volume and zoom.
Speaker... 3240 is louder, female voice. 3050 is not as loud, male voice.

Performance:
Since the hardware is the same for both models, I am attributing any performance differences to the software...
Routing is similar with some quirks...The 3240 routes directly from where I am to the destination. The 3050 routes with intermediate cities in between. For example, I routed from Santa Clara to Oakland. The 3240 showed the dest. as Oakland whereas the 3050 showed Milpitas, Fremont, Hayward, San Leandro, Oakland sequentially as I passed through each city. So the 3050 will tell me to keep left whenever I reach the city limit. A little annoying but not a deal breaker.
I went off route a few times to test the rerouting capability and the 3050 wins hands down. Rerouting takes less than a block most of the time. The 3240 takes a little longer and it does not announce that it's rerouting so it gets a little confusing.
The 3240 will tell you to take a turn before and right at the intersection, the 3050 gives you direction before and at 100 ft or so to the intersection. It will not tell you again at the intersection.
Both have excellent receivers. I get 8-11 sat most of the time (6-7 on the bottom deck of the bay bridge).

I'd have to duplicate this one problem later but it seems the 3050 will not go off road. I went into a mall for lunch and it would stop tracking at the end of the road and refused to follow me into the parking lot. The 3240 will follow me even though it just show a large space. I'll have to see if it's a setting or something. Might be a problem for my friend who wants to also use it on his boat. He just need to see his position relative to the Delta waterways but if it won't leave the road it's useless for him.

Conclusion? If we can't get the upgraded software for the 3240 I would have to recommend to return the 3240 and get the 3050. If we can upgrade then it's a closer call. I like the built-in antenna and memory and the usb port of the 3240. But the external controls of the 3050 is pretty nice too. The 3050 has a TMC input for live traffic info also although I prob would never use it, just letting you guys know.

Oh, I forgot to mention the 3050 comes with maps of Canada whereas the 3240 doesn't. This might be a deciding factor for some.

Forgot again Not GPS related but the 3050 also play video and pictures in addition to mp3. A few games are preloaded. I tried them but I am not a gamer so it wasn't a deal maker for me.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Skipping 89 Messages...

Thanks to GreenDeal and the guys at GPSPassion for the following post.

I have IGuidance working properly (except for a few bugs in the software) on the MIO 310X which uses the Navteq maps. Here are the step by step instructions for you to follow (incase I missed something PM me):

1) You need to make sure that your MIO is hacked and has Activesync Enabled with either your laptop or pc from where you will be doing the iGuidance installation.

2) Install the iGuidance Software on your laptop or PC and make sure you select the following options when installing:
Pocket PC (Selected)
Laptop (Not needed)
MapLoader (Already Selected)
UMPC or AutoPC (Not needed)

And install is under the “\\Storage” card option.

3) After the software is installed on your PC/Laptop you will get a prompt on your MIO about selecting the folder to continue the install. Here simply select the default folder the install has selected and hit okay.

4) After the installation is complete you need the following dll files:
aygshell.dll
note_prj.dll
mfcce300.dll
doclist.dll

5) Click on this link: http://www.teaser.fr/~vdisanzo/xania/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=36&func=fileinfo&filecatid=16&parent=category

And download “Packdllxania.zip” and from this zip extract

aygshell.dll & note_prj.dll

6) Next Click on this link: http://www.teaser.fr/~vdisanzo/xania/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=36&func=fileinfo&filecatid=128&parent=category

And download “Packdll2006.zip” and from this zip extract

mfcce300.dll

7) Finally (Thanks Delta901) go to this link:
http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Cupertino/2039/

On this page (if you don’t know Chinese) search for the following text "MultiByteCabEnabler(WindowsMobile5 PPC—p) 2006/05/29" and download the file right ABOVE that:
Here is the direct link to that zip:
http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Cupertino/2039/dummydll.zip

From “Dummydll.zip” under the ARM folder (NOT THE MIPS FOLDER) extract:

doclist.dll

8) Now place those 4 dll’s in the “\\Storage Card\\iNav iGuidance\\” folder and do a soft reset.

You can access iGuidance from either the Programs directory or directly access the installation folder under Windows Explorer and double click iguidanceQVGA.exe.

9) To enable the software to use the MIO GPS receiver you need to make sure that you change the Communication Port to “COM2” and the Baud rate to 4800.

10) Please make sure that your taskbar is set to “Auto hide” because without that the menu for the last change will not be visible since it sits right behind the Windows Taskbar

TIPS and FYI:

Please note that the “Route List” Functionality (turn by turn itinerary) will freeze your MIO and you will need to do a soft reset.

To view the phone number of the POI you selected since it is hidden behind the iGuidance buttons change the Display Option to use any one of the three available 3D options (Thanks to G-T)
