Please go easy on this. My first post.
Just saw on TV and wanted to share as I myself would like my phone bills to go down. But did not try yet. WWW.G3telecom.com is offering rates at 9c/min to india and to many other countries. I find this better than reliance though I did not try quality. According to them no hidden charges or monthly fees. Maybe will give it a try during this festive season.
Happy festive season to all

Local access numbers required, toll-free available at 1.5 cents more per minute.

they are good. I am using last two weeks. No hiddden charges and call quality is good. Lets see how it goes.

I thought yahoo chat offers the same price.

What about Skype?

Skype is expensive, Yahoo is 9.9 cents per minute.

How about Startec.com..They offer 10cents to india, 4.5 cents in us and 7 cents within your state. You can use pin number (which they will provide when u switch )for calls to be made from a phone other than ur home phone, and you get billed on a single bill (together with your home phone usage and calls made from any other phone using the pin). Same rates whether u use home phone or any other phone including your cell. ..Quality is great..Never had a single dropped call/any trouble.

Do you need to switch your long distance carrier in order to use Startec ?
I am pretty happy with my current LD provider (3 cents / minute) and don't want to change that.

Don't know why calling India is so expensive. calling China only costs 2 cents, some compamy even offer it for free.

Must be better process technology and competition between companies within the country

indian taxes

In Year 2000, it used to cost 55 cents a minute. Now it has come down to less than 10 cents. Give few more years to Indian govt. and we might see 2-3 cents a minute calls to India while calling rest of the world would be free. Just my opinion.

try pingo.com. Link

I think HP offers calling to India for free.
I know that everytime I phone their 800 help line, I wind up talking to someone there!

IMHO, Talkloop.com is a much better choice than startec, esp. if you want to use the same provider for calling within the US. 2c within US, 1.69c to Canada and 11.5 to India (some places 10.5). Lots of local access numbers, excellent call quality. Most importantly, startec requires switching LD provider, talkloop doesn't. Have had it for >1 year, ever since the demise of bigoZoo.

Monopoly of VSNL over voice Gateway. Used to be all govt monopoly now its Tata. every call to Indian landlines must pay a share to VSNL.

They even try to control VOIP service - like Vonage, which does not make sense. Vonage to Vonage has nothing to do with their landlines.

G3 has good service - they are also good in giving $5 referal calling cards out. I had some problem dialing to Canada from USA (its a Canada based company) but worked perfectly for India.

how is the call quality in pingo.com have u tried this for sometime now ?

www.sargamdirect.com has a new Diamond card for 8.33c/min to all India. No fees or anything and 1-min rounding. Just tried it yesterday. Seems ok. Local access numbers reqd. If you call from a cell phone (LD included) you can use any access number.

Is there a tax like reliance? If not, I'll probably give it a try ..

Call quality is pretty good. They also have a $5 bonus if you sign-up now with $20 or more.

I have used them for the last weeks. There was one issue where I was charged for a call that was never connected (charged me $7.xx for what their system identified as a 1 hour 30min + call) but it was resolved quickly after I called them.

Does pingo charge tax like reliance?

Oh no. PINGO charges an account maintenance fee and uses VOIP. From their website:

Where's the small print? Are there any connection or disconnection fees with Pingo?

The fees other than the per-minute charges are a 98 cents USD per month account maintenance fee, and a mandated payphone surcharge of 65 cents USD for calls made from payphones and certain other public phones in the US, and up to 99 cents USD in other countries. Some calls placed from mobile phones outside the United States may incur an additional per-minute fee, which will be disclosed on the RateFinder. Please click here for Pingo's detailed terms and conditions.

How does Pingo provide such low calling rates?

iBasis, the parent company of Pingo, is one of the largest carriers of international phone calls in the world, routing millions of minutes of calls every day for major phone companies around the world, as well as for some of the other providers of prepaid calling cards who don't have networks of their own. With an extremely efficient internet-based VoIP network, and constant effort to develop and negotiate the best connections all over the world, iBasis provides an inexpensive alternative for landline and wireless users to place domestic and international calls at the lowest rates per minute.

reliance used to charge tax but not anymore. Denominations of $5 and above can be purchased.

Primus right now has 9.9c, but you need to switch your long distance carrier (so you will have taxes). I used to have their service before switching over to voip. I am now using reliane when I am away and voipcheap.com when I am at home. Voipcheap costs about 9.1c/min (after considering currency conversion, as first €10 euro costed me $13.07 and gave me 2hr and 10min of calling). I will give g3telecom a try after my current credit with voipcheap is over. Thanks OP.

Pingo charges only 8c/min with 1 minute rounding. Thats what I am using these days. Its just like reliance but they dont have any postpaid programs.

just refilled couple of daysback on reliance. they did charge me tax. they sent an email regarding lower prices for festival season.. all crap. same old prices..

a friend just mentioned if reliance card is registered in CA you dont get taxed. Not sure how far it is true. I am in NY so cant do it. . But for CA guys it'll definitely be good.

You are comparing pingo with reliance, so I assume quality is at least acceptable. Can you comment about the 98c montly maintenance fees that they charge? Is it charged unconditionally or conditional to usage? Thanks.

I enquired about the drop in prices by sending them an email. They wrote back saying the reduction during the festive season was not for India but for other countries. Very Strange.
Also, you should enquire. No tax is charged anymore. At least I dont pay tax

Yes, this is true at least for CA

Reliance hasn't charged me any tax since August.

how come I am charged tax even last week?
what state r u in?

I have been a regular user of reliance ..but lately i have been using amantel and could not be happier (they have lowered their rate to 8 cents per minute now)

I am using Talkloop.com, it's the best calling card I have used so far. Their website is very professional and provides real-time information on your calls. Your calls will show up within seconds. It costs 10cents, but the qualify is good and connects all the time.

Can you point to the name of the particular card that you have been using at http://www.amantel.com/search.asp ?

Yesterday I tried Pingo $5 free card. Seems pretty good. But lost communication with ndia while driving on the free way a couple of times. That did not happen with reliance. But nothing to complain about.

That could just be your cellphone service. What is this $5 free card? Is there a trial?

Been using pingo for abt 2 weeks..Cal quality is good enough for the price..there are lot of coupons for pingo which makes the initiral use really cheap..like 7 of 20 or 25 GC for signup..

Do a search on fatwallet for pingo..

Skipping 37 Messages...

I have been using www.teliage.com for the past three months and I can say their service is better than reliance india. It works just like reliance - u can setup multiple phone numbers for pinless dialing. You can also setup shortcuts for frequently called numbers. They charge around 8.4c/min during day time and 7.4c for offpeak hours (I think its 12AM to 7AM CST).
