I selfishly listed this deal in an effort to help determine if it's "hot or not". I really need a new desktop. Please tell me if this is a good deal, or a steaming pile. Thanks

Thanks If you don't know if a deal is hot or not, list it under deal discussion and ask for opinions. Hot deals is for when you know it is a hot deal. I think this is a warm deal. But why not wait for a free Vista upgrade since that will be available soon? Or wait for Black Friday next month. There will be plenty of hot deals then. And I mean the more expensive but quality systems you can order online, not the cheap deals on slightly-outdated systems that will require you to sleep next to a store enterance to get.
I would say this is warm compared to everything else out there right now. You could get it down to $550 AR if you can find an officemax $50 of $200 which Office Depot will honor. You can pay $70 more ($669) at Dell for the same system configuration (code 6V620-DDCWBA3) with a smaller 160G hard drive and better graphics card. I'm no fan of dealing with Dell, especially if you have a problem.
I'm in the same boat but I think I will hold out until black friday or after. I'm guessing the deals will start to get hotter. Also, the lenovo system has onboard graphics, and the Dell does not. If you think you will ever want to upgrade to better graphics, don't get this lenovo system.

Frankly, I don't see the sense in buying a Windows PC right now. Why not wait a little while until Microsoft caves in to the manufacturers and provides a free Vista upgrade with a new PC purchase this fall. I predict this offer will begin on or around November 15, so there's not much longer to wait. Even if MS fails to deliver on the free upgrade offer, you should still sit tight and wait for Vista because I suspect the upgrade from XP to Vista ain't gonna be very fun for most users.

There's a million reasons some don't want to wait. #1 XP is rock solid (so is win 2k to many of us), so why wait for a new OS? #2 some people really "need" a new machine right now. (7 years old he said!!!) #3 DX 10 is going to be a huge upgrade and many people are not going to want a 1000w power supply to support their new DX 10 video card.
PhatWhallet, This IBM deal is a good one. Everyone wines and moans about the Snell super deals, but I'll tell you that my company now has about 80% IBMs and they are ROCK solid. Ours are all P4 systems, but I doubt there's much quality difference between the Intel and the AMD systems made by Lenovo. They have a well designed screwless case that's easy to get into and easy to change the HDD. Don't expect much in the way of upgradeability though unless they've changed the design of the case. There's no real extra HDD mounting locations, but the cases I have allow for a 2nd 5.25" (CD/DVD) drive. There are 2 3.5" mounts so if you opt for no floppy you could probably mount a 2nd drive in it's location, but with a floppy mounted you'd have the 2nd drive stacked on top of the floppy with no room between the 2. You'd have a serious heat problem with the drive mounted that way so you should avoid it.
I just bought this system after considerable research. It came with the promise of a Vista upgrade for the cost of the media (about $10). I priced the Mobo, CPU, and Memory as being worth $300-350 and the monitor at $241. Dell didn't beat this price when I tried it. The base price without monitor on the Lenovo site was $699.
2.00 GHz, 1 MB cache, 738726U 7387-26U 699 1024 MB memory(10), 250 GB HDD, Windows XP-Home, DVD Recordable, Modem, External speakers, USB Memory Card Reader, Corel Small Business Center
Anyway, I have 14 days to return it. I was concerned that it only has two pci slots. The only disturbing thing I read was about some DOA experiences with this system. Also, OD stinks when it comes to price matches or using the competitions coupons on their stuff and most of their coupons exclude tech. I plan to upgrade the power supply, add one or more additional hard drives, add a DVD ROM, and pull the modem to leave room for useful cards on the PCI slots. I might add a second video adaptor to the PCI-E slot (I think I noticed this slot when I opened the case). The monitor, Vista upgrade, OK speakers included, 250gb SATA hard drive, and five open drive bays made this deal seem good to me. If you don't like the case, just move everything into the FAR Ultra Wizard case from Fry's.
