University Computers is selling the Sony VAIO BX640 (1.66C2D/512mb/60gb/Combo/14") for $599 or $799 after

$600 if you trade-in a Sony VAIO
or
$400 if you trade-in any other laptop

They also have a very good deal on the Sony VAIO SZ340 (1.66C2D/512mb/60gb/Combo/13.3" screen/1" thin/6 hours batt life) that ends up being either $739 or $939 after the trade-in rebate.

I know there are other Sony VAIO Trade-In threads on Fatwallet (like the offer from UBMicro), but I didn't see any from these deals from University Computers or with the new Core 2 Duo Processor. They can get you an educational price (they're very lenient in offering the Sony Educational prices to customers even if they are not educationally affiliated) on ANY Sony VAIO by emailing them at sales@bu.edu - they're usually very competitive with their pricing. For instance, an SZ model (not listed on their website but a special order) came down to be $1039 after the Sony trade-in with a 1.83C2D/100GB/512mb/dvdrw/camera/mic/bluetooth/fingerprint. They usually get back to you within 24 hours when you email them.

I hope this helps people in the market for a new laptop.

6.2 lbs for a 14.1" lappy. Kinda heavy.

is the trade in only valid for the bx model?

NOT hot at all. Lots of places sell that laptop for $1200 ($600AR), look at pricegrabber

It's suspicious....

If I found out any old laptop and trade in for $600, it's impossible, otherwise, we just buy
some old sony laptops for hundered from fleabay, than we can make a lot of money on this promotion.

Like op said, there another monstersized thread about the trade-in here

You can't just make a whole lot of money on the promotion because it works like a rebate, you have to buy a new sony laptop (off of their required list) with the cheapest being the bx series. Also, it's limited to one trade-in per purchase.

edit: although ~700ish isn't bad for the sz series, but I'm wondering if they have any bx540's sitting around. Oh, and I'm still skimming their page but are you saying you can get an even lower price if you're academically affiliated?

Very interesting indeed. Thanks for taking the time to put together this post, it is definitely worth checking out.

Just got an email this morning from Sony Style...

says purchase any of their Sony VAIO computers from 10/26-06 to 3/15/07 and get free upgrade to Windows Vista operating system when it becomes available.

Further research shows upgrade is free only on limited systems, and other systems cost either $45 or $75 to upgrade. Complete details available through link below :

Can anyone tell me if the screen on BX640 is matte or glossy?
Does sony sell anything with a matte screen??

There is a 65 page thread discussing BX series and VAIO Trade-up's, Do you need another thread ???

Tradeup Thread

The BX640 has the glossy X-brite screen from Sony.

Yes, and if you don't think so don't read or post in it. I get very tired of people criticizing other's that do the work to post something they believe is of value. I find old threads get stale and it is posts like this (with new info, by the way)that get me interested in something I wouldn't otherwise pay attention to.

Oh yeah, it should also be noted that the Sony VAIO BX640 discussed here comes with XP Professional. A very decent deal overall.

Thanks again op.

As much as I like my Thinkpad, im thinking about selling it for an SZ. Now I just have to find a crappy notebook to trade.

VGN-SZ320P/B has $150 MIR at CC this week.

So, it is $1970 before MIR and Tax.

final Cost: $1819-$600 (upgrade, sony old laptop)=$1219+tax..

if you use gcs (20% off from dp), it is another ~$370 saving..+FatCash..,total saving is about $400 here.

finaly cost is $819+tax on $1970, about $1K. is it a good deal? any 10% off coupon? Thanks.

any laptop deals from the stores like Sears, cc, Staples, etc (where we can buy from dp for a discount price) since it make the $600 tradein price into $720 (you pay only $480 for $600 value) in fact..

that's a great price from page computes. any other good prices for SZ?

has any1 actually receive a Sony laptop from this site yet? It kind of smells fishy

You guys might want to look at the original thread and see whether this seller is authorized by Sony before jumping in...

Here's an SZ that just became available at Costco... Not cheap, though.

"They also have a very good deal on the Sony VAIO SZ340 (1.66C2D/512mb/60gb/Combo/13.3" screen/1" thin/6 hours batt life) that ends up being either $739 or $939 after the trade-in rebate."

Their SZ is REALLY Overpriced!! And it's the most basic model.

The SZ is a series with prices ranging from $1200 to $2500. I don't know how you could generalize about the whole series.

Is this at the store or online? I don't see it online.

price way too high

Wish the SZ series laptops were available for $1000 like they were from OD clearance 6 months ago.
