I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this dvd player! So far I have hooked up my friends, BIL and now my parents with it.
The USB port rocks! Plug in a thumb drive and you are ready to roll. If you are a bit more daring you can format an external powered hard drive as FAT32 and play a TON of things.
Also, there is a code for this and it can be set to REGION 0. This was the initial selling factor for me but the USB is icing on the cake. Once you go USB you'll never go back. LOL

Payam81 said: Monkeybiz said: Will these upconvert over component? My HDMI is tied up with HD DVR. I have the 642 but like the USB. My 360 won't do DivX.
Nope. Technically they say Component doesnt have the necessary bandwith but in reality I think its copy protection that they want to preserve. Technically you are right but Xbox upscales over VGA until the HDCP kicks in. I think I'll try it, anything to get Divx quality porn to work. Thanks, I shop a lot at phillips outlet.
hopkins07 said: no optical output Doesn't Digital coaxial out give you Dolby Surround? Or are you going for DTS? I don't thing I'd notice the diff. Also I think you HAVE to use FAT32 USB HDD, my X360 might do that too. Just thinking out loud, it's a good deal alright.

Thanks OP.
I have been waiting for a good deal on this DVD player.
I tried this after I got from CC, and I ended up returning it. The image quality was not great even through HDMI. It failed to read some of my dvi files.

is this player better than the $39 one from CC that is posted now? If so, why?

Digital coaxial out will play DTS, the optical out is just slightly better at it.
Thanks, but I made the mistake of logging into my account now it won't let me do employee code. How do you refresh page without cookie? But my promotional code isn't working still..
HOLIDAYS-2006
is that it? Nevermind, I had a space in it at the front, all is well, good deal. Thanks.

Yes NewGuy, I sold my buddy on it he likes it for the USB and HDMI both of which are absent on the 642. I hear upconverting really works and it sure beats spending millions on Blue Ray players and disks.
I managed to register as an employee now, no problem. </blockquote>

Dumb newbie question. Do any of these upscaling DVD players make sense for someone like me, who has a good ol non-HD TV?
This is a great player! upconversion works like magic and the USB port really rocks!! I just ordered my 2nd, and this is going to replace my crappy Sony DreamSystem along with the Panasonic receiver I got.
Do you have any interest in watching foreign dvds (those which are not in Region 1) or watching files from a thumb drive? Those are two big reasons which non-techies choose this player. The previous models like the 642 and the 727 could be made region-free but they don't have the usb port, which is mighty sweet.

Thanks OP. Green for you. Almost bought it today at RitzCamera.com for $64.70 (shiped, after GCO). Glad I waited...

is this crippled by a lack of an eject button on the remote?

What makes you say that? My experience has been that digital coax is always better than optical.ok both of you, what are your basis?

Big Green for OP! I was lucky and got the Home Depot 32" HDTV last week and now i'm finding myself having to upgrade my accessories as well! Sweet price if this does everything it says it does.

I thought upscalar just change the DVD format and doesn't improve quality; also most HDTV have better built-in scaler so it's pretty much useless
someone correct me if I am wrong but I saw this comment on old fatwallet thread, which is the reason I didn't buy that player.
Sturmie said: has anyone tried to get to the link recently? i bought 4-5 of these in the past from the Philips site and was trying to show someone what i got, but it's saying i have an "invalid employee ID" now .
Today, I just got another DVP5982/37 for $59.25 shipped!!!
