I got mine 2 days ago and here are my impressions:
1.-Feels like a Dell. The quality of the Notebook is very close to the Dell XPS12XX. Almost the same color and everything. But at half the price. Definitely not as good as the quality of the IBM notebooks. For the price this is an EXCELLENT notebook. 2.-I ran the battery calibration and it tells me I have about 3:00 hours of use. I lower the screen brightness and throttle down the CPU. 3.-I wiped Windows XP and installed Windows Vista which gave it a score of 2.0 Aero runs and it's quite fast. 4.-I installed MacOSX and I was shocked to see how well everything ran. But you have to install a few drivers. The only thing is not working is the Modem!!. It feels faster than my MacBook! 5.-I hate the keyboard and the touchpad. But that's my personal opinion I am too used to my IBMs. 6.-Bad design for the location of the USB ports. They are all on the right hand side. 7.-Screen is nice and bright.
Don't forget people, a lot of the time a 12.1" is usually more expensive than 14/15" notebooks as everything needs to be smaller and more tightly built.
Plus consider the resolution of 1280x800 --- this is not an el-cheapo piece of glass there, a 12.1" screen packing that many pixels is not cheap. Plus 1GB DDR2 RAM, wireless, Dual Layer DVD burner, 100GB (!) hard drive, and it IS core duo. Sure, it isn't Core 2 but then again it's still far better than say a Pentium-M/Mobile Sempron/Celeron.
This isn't exactly wimpy on the specs side of things.
I'm not saying it's a good deal, that's just a comment. Many people who travel a lot value size and weight savings over screen real estate.
This is the same configuration as the T2370 Averatec that they had for Black Friday. Granted I stripped off Media center and installed Suse 10.0 but this is about the nicest laptop I have used, nice weight and screen is excellent. I was astounded that the graphics card would drive my Dell 2005. Wireless support in linux is poor but easily fixed with a linksys wusb54. It is much easier to travel with and after 1 month I have to give it a 5 star rating. If you have seen my other posts , you know I will find something to nitpick. I will find a couple of things to nitpick about the Core 2 statement. 1. If you run a 32 bit application EM64T is going to lock down to IA32 because EM64T lacks a true 64 bit compatibility mode. "If you have a 64-bit Celeron D or Pentium 4 and Windows 64, 32-bit software will run just fine, however it will run under compatibility mode, meaning they will “see” the CPU as a regular Intel IA32 engine. If you use “heavy” applications and are thinking of moving to 64-bit computing to have more than 4 GB RAM available, keep in mind that you will need new 64-bit version of your software, or they will still access only 4 GB RAM, thus not solving your problem."EM64T/IA32 Same thing happens with Core 2 as this issue with EM64T isn't fixed.
2. Intel has some compiler issues with Vista which is designed for AMD64 not EM64T. Nice paper from Supercomputing 2006 last month in Tampa (the DARPA/IEEE sponsored convention, credentials require proof that you know what is going on). "The divergence of AMD and Intel x86 implementations has created certain "challenges" for compiler vendors. Application developers would like to deliver a single binary that can execute optimally on both architectures"HPCWire The only reason for buying Core 2 duo over this is you have an ego. Core 2 on a laptop offers no usable benefits.

I must admit I haven't heard of Everex.
Nsdp, you seem to have a handle on these things, what do you think of the brand?
Also, do you think that it's preferable to wait a while to get a laptop that is released post-Vista?

My friend use to work for Everex but FIC bought them over now. You can see the Everex/FIC building off Hwy 880 in Fremont, CA. FIC makes decent stuff definitely better than ECS.

I have owned and used 15.4" laptops for years and just purchased my first 12.1" Toshiba. At first I thought it was a step down, but HOW WRONG!!! The smaller size is wonderful and I would not want to go back except for certain uses.
Most 12.1" lappys are around $1k. This seems like a good deal with no rebates to hassle with.
1 month is early to judge overall quality but I prefer it over my old Dell Latitude, screen image is good and the linux drivers for the nvidia card are better than the ATI 200 linux drivers. I got mine for $599 and turned back media center. Still at this price I prefer it to the Dell E1505 my neighbor got for the same price as this. The only downside on mine is the battery and this one has a better battery. The overall fell of the laptop is good and solid. If I remember correctly there are really only 3 Laptop builders in Taiwan so it is hard to tell if there really is any significant differences. Many times I have had Buyer's Remorse but not this time.

I consider it a useful benefit to be able to develop and test the 64 bit version of my software on my laptop instead of waiting to get home and test it on my desktop. It's especially a hassle when I'm visiting a customer and have to make a new build. It's embarrassing not to be able to test it out first and have the customer test it for me on their 64 bit machines. But I guess that's just my ego talking.
I really would like to buy a laptop soon, definitely a 12.1" also. My USB ports are not working so well on my old Dell 700m... The only problem I have right now is that I am waiting for Vista to show up out of the box. Any idea when that might happen? I can't see purchasing one without it right now when (hopefully) shortly it will be preloaded. I don't want to deal with any mess of upgrading to it from another OS.

If you can get both XP and VISTA, why choose get VISTA only?I'm running Vista on trial mode (30 days before having to enter a key). I am about to put WinXP back on my laptop because Vista is driving me nuts. Everything is just harder to get to if you know what you're doing with computers. It reminds me of the days when Win98 went to WinMe.

It's $25 cheaper now....btw, I've had this for a few days now and it's working out great. Battery lasts me over 3 hours and the glossy screen doesn't have to much glare....
Anyone know which model wireless card is in this? I would like to update the one year old driver and there are more current ones on Ralinktech.com but not sure which one to use...
For those of you who got the everex, can you tell me who was the maker of the display panel? You can check under control panels, system, hardware profiles, display and look at the device ID. THX

Any help would be appreciated. It's probably being managed by the Ralink Wireless Utility. If you see it in your system tray, right click on it and click "Use zero configuration as configuration utility", or you could just use the Ralink Wireless Utility to specify your key.
