Just bought 5 Black & Decker Cordless Drills 18 volt with Radio Charger on Clearance for $9.75 at Lowe's Champaign IL. Not sure if this is local or national?? YMMV

the question is whether the price came up automatically when scanned or if the cashier had to override the price

I found an item in the paint dept. that was 90% off and bought them out - and actually could have used more of it.

Other local stores were still full price. Next closest store that had it on clearance was about 40 miles away.

Can anyone explain their clearance strategy?

They are on clearance at most stores. The individual stores usually don't start blowing them out until their getting close to inventory time. My local store (long beach, ca)has these on clearance for 19.99. The manager will give it to you for 9.99(75% off, I know because I just did this for my kid) if you prod him. When it gets closer to inventory time these will be 75% off. If any are left the weekend before inventory, you could usually pick them up for 90% off. My store is doing inventory in about 3-4 weeks. A big YYMM at your store.
