OK, just got back from OD. was talking to the manager and was told that all the XP pcs have to go and cant be sold after the 31st. Only Vista will be sold after that date. He said they will be clearanced to sell but he didnt have the prices yet. He thinks they may have another extra 200 rebate but wasnt sure how they will do it yet, but they are going to be clearanced. YMMV to what stores have, which isnt much mostly the highend notebooks. this was for his district and he think nationally. Possible other stores have this same arrangement.
here are the skus that were left at the two stores
NOTE: on the below links, a nice trick is to goto the OD website, goto your cart, select instore pickup, select the store you want to check then click the links below. if none available, select delivery only to reset back, then select instore pickup and try it again at a different store
I am looking for a laptop, so appreciate the heads-up. Gotta ask though, does this "officially" belong in HD... or Deal Discussion forum?

May or not be what the OP is referring to, but just visited the local OD in Arlington TX and it has marked virtually all of their laptops down - about 12 models from HP, Toshiba and Sony. Only about 3 Sonys didn't have a discount applied. I didn't see anything to get excited about. The discount appeared to me to be
MSRP under $750 = $100 off $750 to $1000 = $150 off over $1000 = $200 off

some stores already sold most xp laptop. some still left the display mode. worth to keep watch.
The Laptops can be sold after the 31st. That manager pulled that out of his butt OD is trying to sell out everything because everything else will be EXTREMELY difficult to sell when sitting next to a brand new system with the new standard next too it.
They will get more aggressive towards that date but to be honest most computer retailers will be doing the same thing.
talked to the other store manager same story, pull all desktop and laptop from the back and wait instructions. they have to be sold by the 31st. havent looked at the weekly specials but the guys were commenting that the Toshiba laptop that in this weeks ad for 499 AR can be upgraded to Core Duo for 75 bucks. dont have the specifics though
Did he say that they won't be on sale until the 30th or might it start early? Since that's a Tuesday it's just a strange day to start a sale. And will it be advertised eventually?
Except that none of those are budget systems. I'm hoping a $500-%600 laptop goes on Clearance for $300-$400. That's what my wife needs.

they said get them out in display, everything they had in lookup get it out for clearance. have no idea when though
cheeto said: Any desktops bought this month get a discount on the vista upgrade right? I think for media center it is free?
I brought the Gateway GT5224 with 19 inch widescreen ($679 deal last week or so) and the Vista upgrade was $9.95 for shipping but free otherwise. The site indicated XP media center 2005 PCs get the Premium Home version as an upgrade.
Just another comment... The Gateway Desktop system I got wasn't on display but since it was on ad I asked anyway. My local OD had only two desktop systems on display last week and about 5 laptops. When I asked about the Gateway system though they had two "in back".
I went to the store to pick it up and the manager indicated that they had more inventory, much not on display that they hadn't put out but he didn't elaborate why. I guess this clearance might be the reason. However it could mean that there may be more systems for grabs that just won't be on display if they are holding the shelves clear for the newer Vista systems.
I was at my local OD today looking for desktops. Not one laptop or desktop to be had. I asked and they said waiting for Vista. I'm puzzled because my last two HP machines purchase last month have the free express Vista upgrade included. And I'm in no hurry to go Vista until I see the DRM and patches. Guess people are clueless and don't care if they pay full retail.
One of the OD store near my place marked down 6 laptops today: Sony C140G/B down to $900-$150 rebate; Gateway Tablet Cx2726 down to $750-$100 rebate; don't remember about others but those two are the hottest. Pulled the trigger on the Sony C140G. These are laptop on display though (last one).

$150 rebate already available on the following laptops.
So do we know what day these will get the additional discounts? It seems that OD usually does some clearance sales on Thurs-Sat ads. Anyone can confirm that actual dates?

Cx2726 : call to local store they still mark at $899.
I am in no hurry for Vista. The digital rights management is Draconian, from what I have heard. Also, certain parts of your PC may not function if Vista thinks that you are doing something you shouldn't be doing in relation to digital rights management. Also, it is going to be more difficult to find freeware in my opinion, because Vista will not allow just any application to run on it. From what I understand, Microsoft will have to be paid money by software developers in order to get the technical ability to run anything on Vista.
I want to be able to do what I want with my PC. If I want a HD DVD or Blu-Ray, I will buy one as a stand-alone unit, most likely. But I don't want Hollywood's or Microsoft's fingers inside of my machine, messing with my hardware functionallity. I'll let the brave Guinea Pigs go first with Vista, I think.

Offtopic:
Read article in PC agazine which reads: "Top 10 reasons NOT to upgrade to VISTA."
According to them, home users should wait almost a year after the launch to get a stable version. Lot of things to be worked out and let other gunie pigs go first.
I think am happy with XP and will stay with it. FREE Vista upgrade I will get that am going to sell.

FWIW, I was in St*ples yesterday looking to buy a new desktop. I remarked on the puny selection, and the salesperson told me to wait until next week, that all the electronics stores would have good deals because of Vista coming out. Since he was willing to bypass a sale to tell me that, I'm taking his advice and waiting.
guys, that all I know. I manager was unsure himself, but this sale is going to happen soon, thats why I didnt post it in DD.
