This isn't new - it's been on the TivoComunity forums for a while now.
The Series3 is still too expensive for my blood, especially since I simply download all the HD widescreen content I want using BitTorrent, then play it on my modded Xbox running XBMC. Cost = free. I won't even consider the Series3 until it's less than $200, and I won't pay more than $6.95/month for the service. Period.
Please change thread title. I saw this and thought it meant I could actually upgrade my box for $199. Instead, this is just to change lifetime service to a new box, which I still have to pay for in full.
I still can't believe Tivo has the nerve to charge $200 to change lifetime service into. . . lifetime service. For $700, lifetime service should be included. I'll stick with my SD Tivo and an HD cable DVR.

Yeah, fooled me with the title as well. I only paid $150 and $199 for my lifetime subscriptions back around 7 years ago.
Guess I got my moneys worth out of them at this point...
Dont see much reason to do this when you can go with directv, get the Tivo for free, and pay $5 a month for the Tivo service on as many receivers as you want.

Only if he was downloading premium HD content. Many HD channels are free over the air, Mr. Sarcastic.

Tivo <> DVR. DirecTV no longer sells the HD Tivo, they now how an HD DVR. The bad news is no Tivo UI, the good news is it gets the locals in HD off the sat. A real D* HD Tivo you have to put up an antenna of some type and pick up the locals in HD over the air. FYI, I see places selling for $1,100 or more (for new ones) which is MORE than they sold for when they came out!
Here you can get limited basic for $8-12 per month and get the locals in clear QAM and "Tivo" them if you have a S3 Tivo. No antennas, Tivo interface, etc.
The OP does deserve red, because I did this deal back in September (I went with Circuit City coupons).
He may have gotten green if he was one of the folks at the end of December who passed the word that the deal was extended to January.
However, for all "the haters" in this thread, have you actually seen and/or used one? If not, you have no idea what you are talking about. It's that simple. It's like when the first Tivo came out and everybody said "but I have a VCR!"
Lastly, Tivo itself is an amazing company when it comes to customer service. When I called in September, I had a dead S1 in my closet and was using a S2. Since the S1 had life, I had the S2 at a service discount. When I signed up with this deal, they moved the life to the S3, but they gladly offered (as in I didn't even think to ask, she did this on her own) to put the free year on the S2 instead of the S1 since I had mentioned that I don't use the S1 any more.
The 32 hours is nothing tho, so within two weeks I had slapped a 500 gigger in there...

Wait a minute -- I don't see any Tivo haters here. I have 2 Tivo's, which I love. But that doesn't mean I'm stupid enough to pay $700 for an HD Tivo-- the user interface may be light years ahead of my cablevision DVR, but its not worth $700. Especially considering a huge feature of Tivo over generic DVR's, namely the TivoToGo, is disabled on the HD Tivo.
Why do Tivo fanatics freak out at even the slightest criticism of their beloved product? I agree, Tivo's are great, but the company's business model stinks. Maybe if Tivo customers started acting a little more rationally, we would get price points that are not ridiculous.
We have three Tivos, just make sure a lifetime subscription is right for you. "Lifetime" refers to the life of the Tivo box, not your lifetime. If you are like me, I got our Tivos FAR or even made money on the boxes. Warranty is for only one year, if it dies after that, THAT is the lifetime of your subscription. For me it is easier and cheaper to go month to month and then mod the box after one year when it is mine free and clear.
