If you are not familiar, the R4 (Revolution) is a Slot-1 device (meaning it fits in the smaller slot of the Nintendo DS). It takes a MicroSD card and can be used for Homebrew and all types of applications, like playing video and music.

Other applications are possible as well, but this is not the place to discuss piracy. I do not believe the mods will tolerate it, so please do not discuss it, or the thread will be removed.

It can be purchased here from Sky2k.com. I recieved mine a week ago, and it is my second successful purchase from them. The first purchase (a different item) shipped from Canada, and this most recent purchase shipped from Asia (so obviously they take a bit to be received).

Also, $6 can be saved if the Chinese version is bought. It can be used with US games, but you have to use the Chinese firmware. There is a very easy fix that requires soldering one point to change it to be able to use the USA firmware, that can be read about
here.

This device is one of the cheapest solutions out there, and recieved an OUTSTANDING review here.

In the box comes a second casing for the device. It comes in the white cartridge, and by removing one screw, you can put it in the black casing (to match whichever color DS you have). It also comes with a little case that holds these two cartridges (or two games). It also comes with a MicroSD (aka TransFlash) USB reader, and a mini CD with the software necessary, and some good applications to use, including MoonShell and a program to shrink ROMs.

And here is a forum dedicated to this device.

Its kinda like those "glass shops" that sell what is blatantly for using drugs. Its legal in and of itself, and while there are technically legal uses for it, you buy it to do illegal things.

$40+shipping.

It works great. I'm watching Final Fantasy VI on the DS now.

SO, just what sort of "things" do people use these for? I read the review at GBAtemp and I still don't quite understand WHY one would get this?

I'm sorta "afraid" to get it because it looks like I'd have ONE MORE device (in addition to my Windows XP & Windows Mobile devices, for example) to "take care of" IF you know what I mean!

There are plenty of legal things this can do. I own one, its great, I can watch video and listen to MP3/ACC on it. I use the miniSD in my camera and review the pictures through the interface of the DS.

Note: This isn't a realy hot deal, this is the average price.

$20 shipping. My site is cheaper...

As long as people are allowed to discuss stuff like GUNS here on FW, there really should be no question about the discussion of things like this.

Do you know of a hotter deal including shipping?

Been looking for one of those and...

You sold me! Ordered one, standard shipping. Express, which I would have liked was $27...No thanks.

Can't wait!

I got a M3 DS Simply here:
Real Hot Stuff
They also have the R4 which is pretty much the exact same thing.

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in...I have the m3 lite and love it! One advantage it has over this model I believe is you can play backups *cough* of your GBA games as well as your DS games...

http://www.modchipstore.com/R4-DS-R4DS-Slot-1-solution-homebrew-backups-microsd-16424.html

51.60 with DHL shipping (it came in less then 2 days, much faster then UPS imho)

Ok, that's more shipped, but not much more to get it a lot faster.

Note, however, that you can get the chinese version from where I posted which can be used fine, or modified to be the american version.

I bought this from gameyeeeah a few days ago, it's en rout toe me Not only is it cheaper to buy it there than at sky2k, gameyeeeah also have much better feedback than sky2k on resellerratings.com

It is NOT $20 shipping. I am quite certian of this because I just place an order for this exact item 4 days ago. It was something like $5 shipping. That makes it cehaper than the OP's deal, not more expensive.

It's only $20 if you buy over $50 (kind of bizarre, but that's the way it works).

Why red this post? They have high 9 resellerratings. I'm ordering from them. Green for this guy.

Okay, Okay...I shot myself in the foot. I would rather order it elsewhere where they have faster shipping.

So, stupid question that I can't find the answer to...How do I cancel this order at "Sky2k?"

still deciding which i wanan get for my ds lite. I think playing GBA games is a big bonus over the M4

When i add it to my cart at gameyeeeah, it changes to $89!

Yes that's true. If you're using a slot 1 solution, then you'll only be able to play the backups *cough* of your DS games.

Any pointers on modding it to the english version?

I've glanced at these thing for awhile, never quite ordering one. I was assuming you have to be a teckgeek to use them on the ds. am I wrong?

Actually its alot easier now then the previous generation. This like the m3 simply is a one step solution. All you need to do is insert a microsd card for storage and place it in the ds. The older units like supercard /m3 required a passkey and then a bulkier cartridge that held the memory (sd, compact flash, etc). This unit has the passkey (circumvents the ds bootup and allows you to boot from the memory card) built in. I have an m3 minisd and I am able to place 45 games (backups of course) on a 2 gig minisd). You will need to update the firmware to play all the latest backups.

Email them?

I hadn't ever had to cancel.

The M3-Lite I have is easy to use...you have one cartridge that holds your microSD card which goes in the GBA slot, and a passkey that goes in the DS game slot, and you're good to go. The M3 comes with software that is used to write games to the SD cards, and there's a cool wiki site here which keeps track of which backups are currently working and with what settings:

I got an M3/Passkey combo from divineo

Divineo

Basically, if you're a DS owner I would STRONGLY recommend one of these...one of the best game-related purchases I've ever made =)

To mod it, take the one screw off (it's a tiny screw, but it is made to be taken apart, because it comes with a second shell (so you can make the color of the cart match your DS) to expose the bare card. Then locate the correct jumper and short them out (preferrably with a permanent solution like solder).

Pictures and a discussion of doing this are discussed here.

Note that you don't really need to do that, just run the Chinese firmware... it still runs American games/programs.

I got a Chinese and American one. I haven't messed with the Chinese one. I'll have to try it later and see how it really goes. If I have issues, I'll just mod it to be the American version.

Note that modding it allows it to use the American firmware, it doesn't automatically make it the American version. And the firmware isn't really firmware, its more of an OS, because it consists of files that are copied over to the card from the CD.

See, what I linked originally is the same thing, but you don't need TWO items, instead it does all that you mentioned using only the first slot.

It also doubles as a passkey, incase you also want to use a card in SLOT2 for other apps that must be run there or just for more storage (as big MicroSD cards are expensive still).

Note that the M3 Simply and the R4 are exactly the same card. It is discussed here. You can actually turn one into the other (by shorting or unshorting bridges). However, the consensus is that it is best to stay as an R4 because they are the makers of the hardware and firmware. Their firmware releases are earlier than the M3 Simply unit.

Ya...I know, just to clarify...when I said I would strongly recommend one of these, I meant any of these flash card DS solutions. I have gotten great value out of mine, and I'm sure this R4 flash card is a good value as well. I agree, go for this one if you don't need the ability to play GBA backups

I was thinking about getting a DS, and I would like to be able to play my GBA backups as well. I have a flash card for my GBA. Will that work in the DS so that I can get this R4 thing?

Ya, your GBA flash card should work fine even without the R4...I believe you'd just start the DS and then select GBA mode to run your GBA flash card, or you could boot with the R4 in and switch to GBA mode I think

You may consider spending the extra dough and getting an M3-lite though, because then you'd only need 1 microSD card instead of 2 flash cards, and I'm guessing your GBA flash card will stick out pretty far on the bottom of the DS Lite...

these are only around $25USD in HK and in China..
$40 for this ????? way overprice....

this makes me want to get a ds. what video formats does it support and what do they look like on the screen?

$40 is actually a good deal for one of these. Try finding me one of these for $25 in the US. There's just no way.

If I had to guess, it is because that the DSLite is so much superior to the DS that there really isn't any quesiton in most people's mind as to which is better hence you got red for asking the question that may be obvious to most. If I had to guess...
