Wow, that still makes this deal very HOT. According the benchmark I see above the 2MB extra cache doesn't make that much of a diff. Green for you, OP.

Benchmarks are subjective. If you're a light user, you might not be able to tell the difference. But it does make a significant difference for a lot of users.

does the intel heatsink & fan good?? and is it quiet? plz let me know as rumor said intel heatsink & fan are very quiet & efficient. anybody think this E6400 will blow my Pentium D 805 away (runing at 4.0Ghz now)

My penitum D 805 is extremely fast, compare to my P4 2.8ghz HT.....
any suggestion?? upgrade now or later until the e6300 drop to $100.....

Benchmark shows that the stock heatsink/fan is horrible at overclocking compared to other brands.

http://anandtech.com/casecooling/showdoc.aspx?i=2932&p=6

stock heatsink overclocks a x6800 to 2.9, while other heatsinks overclocks to 3.7-3.9 ghz on C2D. Yes Intel heatsinks are very efficient compared to AMD retail HSF.

Nah.. You misread that part.
2.9 is original clock speed.
With stock HSF, it went up to 3.73 GHz. (look at Intel Retail HSF)

I know that the deal is dead already for the e6400, but i'm wondering if the e6600 hundred is worth it for $100 more ? I'm trying to decide between the two. I'm planning to use it for a htppc, I currently have bad axe2 and x1950 pro. I have read on avsforum that the minimum is e6600 if you want to do hd, blue ray and even more if you are using ati video card. I'm planning to OC which ever i decided to get I just got to hear it from the pro. Thanks in advance.

The max. overclocking frequency for the two is theoretically the same (why overclock in an HTPC though?) The only difference is that E6400 has a fixed mem. multiplier (x8, I think) and therefore your memory might be the limiting factor in overclocking (still, you should be able to get above 3GHz easily). In my opinion E6600 is not worth extra $100.

I have read on avsforum that you would need at least E6600 for decoding blue ray.

That's complete bull cr%p:

1) >90% CPU cannot decode blue ray format? -- how stupid is that?
2) you can *almost always* overclock (easily!) any of E4300, E6300, E6400 to 3GHz, at which point they'll leave E6600 (running at stock speed) in the dust.

I have one on hold, but can't decide if I want to pick it up or not. For one, the HSF I was planning to use (CoolerMaster Hyper 6 (KHC-V81)) should be sufficient, but I don't think I have a mount that fits socket 775. The HSF works on amd 754/939 and intel 478, so I would assume that there would be some adapter plate/bracket - but then I might as well buy another HSF.

I would just wait for the price drops in April, but I just picked up a refurb board from Newegg and need to test it out. I've found out some bad stuff about this board though, so I may just send it back and wait...

Anybody figure out what is meant by Microcenter's description of the processor being "Private Label Intel Processor"-trying to figure out why they were able to offer the chips so cheap (below current list prices). When you search for cpu's on Microcenter, they have the regular intel chips at higher prices and these at lower prices (of course the 6400 at the lower price is out of stock).

I thought the prices that Intel puts out are the same for everybody buying in bulk, let's say 1000+ units. Maybe a very large buyer like Dell might still get some advertising $$ that effectively subsidizes the chips, but it would seem that somebody is taking a loss on these because no other vendor has/had the chips for that low of a price.

Thoughts?

Intel has stopped making the E6300/E6400 line and reintroducing it with 4mb L2 cache for the same price. They will be called E6320 and E6420. Once they come out E6300 and E6400 procs will be obsolete and prices will drop faster than Jimmy Hoffa and his Cement shoes

FYI, Prices of the E6600 and E6700 are also scheduled to be slashed a significant amount, it pays to wait a bit

Obsolete? Hmmmm.... I just don't think so...

GWBush said:The consensus from the various board I read is that the Zalman 9700 is over priced for its performance, louder than it should be, and does not hit the OC potential of other HSF in the same price range or those even in lower price bracket. Looks like Zalman got lazy resting on their laurels this round... Consensus is the Tuniq 120 being the winner ATM although I'm hard-pressed to find a good deal on it as everywhere I looked it's ~$59.99, way too much to pay for a HFS IMHO.

A cheaper (and from what I've read, better than the Zalman) HSF is the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, which goes in and out of stock for around $30 at a few places - EWiz, ChiefValue, PerformancePC - except Newegg where its about $70!

I got my order in, but then was notified via email that it was oos. Anyone think the order will be fulfilled? Did anyone get their order in and get it shipped?

Just got off the phone from MC rep. He stated that they would know something mid week. Either they will buy product from another vendor, or buy directly from Intel. I asked, "So this order will be honored?" and the Rep said, "Yes".

It seems like MC got slammed with this deal Right now the e6400 is listed on their website for $238. I hope I do get it at the lower price.

Damn, just got an email from MC that my order was cancelled. I was among the earlier ones to order it last week well...maybe i should wait till April

I think that's just what they call OEM versions (non retail ones).

Anyone else had their order canceled due to insufficient stock? The CSR lady politely told me that it was a very popular product and that they ran out of it. Am I the only one so far to have gotten the cancellation email? Anyone received the proc yet?

I called again to check to see if it is cancel (not home right now to check email). The Rep said that the item is still on backorder. Didn't say it had been canceled. Did state that eventually (30 days) the item will be canceled if they can not fulfill the order. My feeling is that it most likely will be canceled. I said that they currently have the retail version on their website for $220. Why can't they just fulfill the open orders with this product?

alert mods

Probably because what we were ordering is the OEM version and not the retail, and if they gave us retail ones they'd lose money?

I'm waiting as well to see if my backorder gets filled. If you get a cancellation, you might be able to call back in and ask them to reinstate the order. Thats worked for me in the past with Microcenter. There's just some automated systems that can bounce some orders at times.
