Warning: This game is for the true trekkies...Do not buy if you are not a STAR TREK fan I agree. I'm a trekkie and this game is amazing. Great Star Trek Game.
I own this game (but I paid $59.99 for it) and this is a great price, but I have to note that it is an OK game - very challenging controls and keeping track of everything. I read a review right after it came out that said that you will have to have the manual close all the time. After playing it I will have to agree with that.
On the plus side the attention to detail is awesome and if you are either a Trekkie OR a Trekker you will find this game worth it just to experience it. The gameplay is challenging but it DOES work.
For a trekkie, the eye-candy in ST:Legacy is a bit disappointing. The ships are beautifully rendered, but when a destroyed ship explodes, it breaks into 10 polygonal pieces, which looks really fake and 1980's technology (like TRON).
Also, I am not sure why there is a 4-ship limit in ST Legacy, when older 3D games like StarTrek Armada (anybody remember that game?) allowed you to command dozens of starships at the same time. At least those ships exploded into more than just 10 polygons...

At least those ships exploded into more than just 10 polygons... I still have Armada 1 and 2...which are great games! From what I've read, Legacy can be partly considered Armada 3. I haven't purchased Legacy yet, but from what I've read, the reason for a limit of only four ships is to make it feel more real as each ship should be valuable and not just a disposable ship that can be rebuilt in seconds. True, I think its more fun flying 10 dozen starships toward an enemy starbase, but in the Star Trek world, thats not how they do it, and they wanted to recreate that in this game.

after playing it for awhile, this got to be sort of an interesting game (but them i'm a star trek fan). still, graphics were subpar especially on explosions, physics were lame (bouncing off planets and other ships) and missions were generally uninteresting. could have done so much better...worth playing only if a trekkie.
