I just tuned both the Sceptre and Vizio with the Avia DVD last night, and they both looked much better, but I still like the Vizio 37" more.

I finally decided last night that I am for sure taking the Sceptre back. The deciding factors for me to go with the Vizio over the Sceptre are:

1. Vizio handles full 1366x768 when hooked up through the VGA to my laptop, Sceptre only does 1024x? I think.
2. I like the picture on Vizio more.
3. Vizio has a universal remote.
4. Vizio is $200 cheaper.

The hardest part about this decision was giving up 5" of screen, but to be honest, even side-by-side the size difference wasn't that noticeable, and the picture quality made up for this.

For everyone who got a Sceptre, I don't think it is a bad product. I just liked the other more.

**edit - I am not using the QAM tuner, only OTA stuff so far.

Does this TV have a matte or glossy screen?
I am very tempted to grab it @ 42" and with QAM

Matte screen, but piano (glossy) frames.

This is definitely a good deal when you considering Costco's return policy and the product's spec. Costco also has Vizio 42" for $999. However, Vizio's spec isn't quite close to that of Sceptre in terms of contrast ratio. I don't know how the Olevia got the green, but I think this Costco's price for Sceptre is just right (or slightly better than others). As you know, (pricewise) Costco is just right for most of their products, that's why I love costco and as you mentioned their return policy is still the best among all the retailers in the world. I would get this set definitely if I am ready to buy it. But I would also consider buying a Samsung 40" LCD model 4041D bundled with a Harmony 680 remote for $999 w/ FS and No Tax from Vanns if they still have this deal. If you don't know who made the pannel for Sceptre's 42" I would definitely go with the Samsung one simply because you most likely wouldn't go wrong with leading company's product. FYI Samsung makes Sony's pannels and Sony either makes their's own or buys pannels ONLY from Samsung just because Samsung's quality is proven.

I am debating between the $800 37" Vizio and this deal. I wish this were in-store so I could compare.

BTW, the $999 Vizio 42" is a Plasma - at least at the Costco by me. The 42" LCD Vizio is $1199.

I have my 42" in the bedroom and boy it's big (and bright)!

I almost wish I would have gotten a 32 or 37" for the bedroom....

HD looks AWESOME, the SD PQ is so-so (like most LCD's).

Not to say anything in this evaluation is wrong but when putting a 37" next to a 42" display, the 37" will always look sharper.

if without the $300 off for the sceptre, would most of everyone go with the vizio 42" lcd at $1199? would you all agree that the vizio name is better than the sceptre? i'm only asking because i bought the sceptre but is now having second thoughts due to a couple factors. (1 dead pixel that's becoming annoying to me, speaker lacks bass, price will drop even more the longer i wait, etc.)

i looked at my local sam's club, which does NOT have the 42 gallavia line but does have the 47" for ~$1700 sitting next to a $2700 sony bravia. the sony look very good but i think the vizio does very well, especially for being $1000 less. so, i'm considering returning the sceptre and wait for the 42" vizio to go on sale. any comments???

without the $300 off, yes, vizio would be better.

Most onboard speakers lack bass, infact they usually suck! Even a cheapa$$ "theater in a box" would be better.

Has anyone who got one of these had problems with the remote sensor? I have to be 3 inches away from the TV for it to recognize the remote (and yes I changed batteries, tried other remotes, etc). I'm just wondering if this is a common problem.

Everything else works fine. I think the picture is pretty good. It's still on sale and would be an extremely hot deal if only my remote worked half-way decently.

how does this compare to Syntax olevia 342i? I know no tuner but what about the rest?

You may want to check if the IrD port from the remote is covered by a very thin piece of plastic.

Thanks. It was and I did notice and remove that before I tried out the remote. Like I said it's not the remote because my universal remotes have the same problem.. I have to be within inches of it for it to sense it. It needs to go back but I've just been too lazy and hoping for a better deal in the meanwhile..
