BlkBimM3r said:last time I ordered a Customize to order laptop from OD shipping was about $40. The base config of $399 is a bit underconfigured for me, so if I were to take all the upgrade options (1gb ram, 80gb HDD, processor upgrade, DVD burner, and Vista Premium) thats almost $200 more w/ shipping and CA sales tax it would be almost $700. Does it come w/ BrightView? Not a bad deal after the upgrades.
i'd say it's a lousy idea; do you need any of those upgrades? i think you're being pretty silly just slamming all the upgrades on |

that's right; you don't need the upgrades, unless you absolutely need a dvdrw portably or some such (and you don't unless you know you do), this is a very nice config for a $400 lappy, very nice
with tax and shipping you're looking at upwards of $475 i imagine, but still a good deal; ESPECIALLY with no rebates, and tax on only $400 |

killme2 said:I own two Compaq laptops. The motherboard on the first one broke. I spent $40 to see if it can be fixed, it couldn't. Spent $250 on a new motherboard and installed it myself. Laptop now works again.
There was an error in the manual, which resulted in me paying a professional to service my laptop. I contacted HP about it and sent proof and they reimbursed me for the cost. I was very happy.
They are expensive to fix so I get extended warranties and replace my laptops every 2 years with new models.
i had two v2000z's that both had screen problems, so yeah i know the feeling, watch your warranty |

Might be a silly question, but can you just drop a Core2Duo in here? ie is the right socket and will the BIOS support it?

Well, that's not even the case when someone pick up my order - There were NO LAPTOPS available in any of the local stores and warehouses when the sale went on.
clearanceman said:lemond said:I am still bittered about not getting my President's day sale - They "somehow" let the order throught for local pick up but only find out there weren't any, and none within 50 miles
That's because they don't hold anything. If someone comes in to buy your pick up order before you pick it up, they will sell it. At least that has always been my experience. |

I don't see why not. This Compaq and the HP DV series are all basically the same machines. People have upped their DVs with a Core 2 Duo. They all say it's not worth it though since it's a hassle to get to the CPU and the speed increase is marginal. But if you need 64 bits, it's an option. But chances are you can order it with the Core 2 Duo upgrade so why not do that. It'll be cheaper than buying one aftermarket, installing it and then selling the Core Duo. I think it costs $125 to up it to a Core 2 Duo. |

should ship within 25 days since it's HP (based on my past experiences with CTO orders from OD) If you order early, you might get it within 2 weeks definately not as fast as Dell |

Gizzle said:My only question is, is this base compaq going to run extremely slow with 512mb of ram and vista? Is the upgrade to 1gb worth it if your buying it for a kid going off to college and dont have time, or live in the same state, to upgrade seperately?
Also is the upgrade to vista premium the way to go? And for my 3rd only question, is upgrading the processor really a big upgrade if all the kid is going to use it for is surfing the internet, using it for college, email, aim, watching videos, etc.
Thanks
Increasing RAM is the most direct route to performance improvement. The more the better.
But failing that, Vista offers an alternative some users have found helpful:
You might already own, or be able easily to borrow, a key drive. If so, try using Vista's ReadyBoost capability. ReadyBoost is a HDD caching feature which can improve thruput by mirroring HDD data on the key drive. YMMV with this approach, but it's worth a try.
Note ReadyBoost is a feature of Vista ONLY, all versions. But it is not available with other operating systems. |
