14k white gold snake chain -- 18 inch @ amazon

$119.00 (9.1 grams) = $13.08 gram.

there is no 14k white gold, the 14k white gold is colored yellow gold, not the white gold you think.

To Shua2162,
Your statement, (if I understand what you are trying to say here), is incorrect. This chain is not "colored" in any way, it is the normal mix of pure gold and alloys that is characterized as "white gold" everywhere. The only difference between this and yellow gold is the predominance of nickel, zinc and copper with which the gold is alloyed versus the mixture of silver, copper and zinc which results in "yellow gold." Both yellow and white gold contain the same percentage of pure gold per kt. You should stick to commenting on that with which you are familiar or you will mislead other FW'ers...and I'm sure that isn't your intention.

OH and green for OP, this deal is excellent, about a third of the cost of similar items I've seen lately.

Thanks, OP. The fact that your deal was rated red by three posters and green by only one at the time I am writing this is a sad commentary on the mindset of too many fatwallet posters. This gold is priced just above melt value. If you think this is not a hot deal, in this instance you really are foolish (as we all are at times). Insofar as white gold not being 14k gold, this is simply more nonsense. The color of a gold alloy is determined by the metals it is alloyed with. 14k yellow gold is usually alloyed with copper and silver. 14k white gold is most commonly alloyed with zinc and/or nickel. The proportion of elemental gold in each is the same, 14/24ths, or 58.33%. While I am not a fan of Amazon, this necklace is being sold at a price below what it would cost to manufacture and market this piece today (even with gold having dropped to just above 630).
Again, thanks OP. Pay no attention to the threadcrappers and keep up the good work.

Edit: I see Sness beat me to it. Thanks, Sness. Composition of my reply took me a while because I was trying to reply in a polite fashion to what I perceived as mean-spirited (or ignorant) evaluations. The problem with such nonsense is that it discourages people from posting, harming the Fatwallet community.

White Gold: White gold is an alloy of gold and at least one white metal, such as silver or palladium. Like yellow gold, white gold is measured in Karats.

Its properties vary depending on the metals and proportions used. As a result, white gold alloys can be used for different purposes; while a nickel alloy is hard, strong and therefore good for rings and pins, white gold-palladium alloys are soft, pliable and great for white gold gemstone settings. The highest quality white gold is usually at least 18 karat, and made up of gold and palladium, and sometimes even trace levels of platinum for weight and durability, although this often requires specialised goldsmiths.

Whilst some higher quality white gold alloys retain their shine and lustre, most will be coated with a very thin layer of rhodium. This will give the naturally more dull white gold a shine comparable to platinum or silver. Often white gold will require cleaning, or re-coating of rhodium at a later date.

At today's gold prices ($638.80 today, or ~$22.53/gram), this is a decent deal for the gold price alone.

Thanks OP, in for two. This will be a huge brownie point winner for my Mother In Law next Xmas, seen these at 4 times the price. VERY VERY HOT! The threadcrappers are cuckoo. Sness posted what I was thinking, this is normal 14K white gold, have no clue what that guy in the 1st post here was going on about..weird.

Agreed, Christmas. We all appreciate someone taking the time to point out inaccuracies in a way that both encourages helpful commentary and discourages FWer's from making uninformed statements as if they were factual. The point is to clarify and give credit where credit is due and isn't to belittle the poster.

P.S. GMTA, LOL!

Other White Gold Chain

What do you guys think about this, a little bit thicker. Could you get away with wearing this without a pendant?

Well...the chain reportedly weighs 9.1 grams and is 14KT. Based on an estimated price for pure gold of $645/oz., I calculate the melt value of the chain to be ~$121.60 so one could make $2.50 per chain (assuming it costs nothing to melt or resell the gold.

I'm not a goldsmith so anyone care to check my math?

$80 /5.8 = $13.79 /g

Are these for men or women?

They're OOS, but meant for women...unless a guy doesn't mind wearing a very "thin" chain around his neck. They're great for use with a pendant on a woman.

good price for 14k

a bit off topic but where is a good place to get 18k gold necklace/bracelet?

This item is currently not available.

Anyone knows where I can find some chain with cross for guy?
