Dell is offering a sweet deal to whom bought the XPS 700. Upgrade to the new mobo when it comes out on the XPS 800 later this year + optionally 25% off quad core CPUs when bouch from the Dell accessories and periphearal web site. Note the on-site installation is included. Upgradign the mobo will most likely encopass the upgrade of the memory stick (677 to 800 or more) and the OS. Reinstall etc. which means most likely Vista.
Now if you check the Dell outlet store you can notice that they have XPS 700 going starting at $1129. You can buy a 10% off XPS outlet systems from eBay for $10.
The nice part the upgraded system will to all accounts equivalent to new XPS 800 machine. Or so that is what the BIOS will say, that's the way the system will identify itself and will be warranted and serviced. I'm suggesting that Dell will realize that having to upgrade the system one by one on-site will not be sensical and will happen to swap 700s for 800s
I think it's a good play but don't know how many 700s are left in the outlet.
that is simply not true. Xps costumers could upgrade to vista home premium for $10

This upgrade could not be applicable for them as well.

This upgrade could not be applicable for them as well. How do XPS customers upgrade to Vista for $10? I got a mailer from Dell offering me Vista for the low, low price of MSRP, and I bought an XPS 700 brand new.
Besides Vista (which personally I dont' want right now) what do poeple think of the deal?
I am looking for a desktop to be used as a media center. The coupon in the OP does not work, but they are available on eBay for @$10.
Lots of 700s in inventory all 1129 or 1199 (refurb vs previously ordered new)

Motherboard exchange at no cost Later this year, we will offer XPS 700 customers the option to exchange their original motherboard for Dell’s next-generation XPS gaming motherboard. We will make the motherboard and the installation available to these customers at no charge. To streamline the process, all motherboard exchanges will be done by Dell-authorized onsite service technicians. Since both motherboard exchange options involve a next-generation product, there are some details I can’t discuss at this point. We will share more information later this year—appreciate your patience. In that same timeframe, XPS 710 customers will also have the option to purchase a parts bundle that includes an upgrade to Dell’s next-generation motherboard as well as installation service. Pricing has not yet been determined.
YES. That's the whole point of this deal. The free upgrade. The only condition is to own an XPS 700. Don't get a XPS 710 because those are excluded from the free upgrade.
Again, the outlet has a limited number of systems so this deal will not last a long time...

this is hot-my kid has been bugging me for the quad core and this is a way in that will save at least $1K
I wanted to add a bonus here. If you beg customer support after buying an XPS 700 they are allowed to issue a $200 bonus per system with a maximum of $300/year per account.
This is YMMV but if you read the posts you can notice how all the XPS customers are talking about their $200 voucher. Someone has not received them yet, but... Dell admited is still working on the backlog.
