Yea, that was my mistake.

In this case, what's the best course of action? Buy domain from GoDaddy and then get the hosting elsewhere like HostPC? Will there be any problems in transferring the domain?

What do you guys think?

rated:
promotion codes to hell? you can get there for free if you try - no purchase required.

domains for free?? please tell.

solidfusion said: stisev said: Hi FW users,

I desperately need help regarding domains & hosting. I apologize if it seems newbish, but I'm not that good at this stuff.

I need to register a .COM domain name and get some hosting in the process. The site will see VERY little traffic, so price and stability is more of a concern than features. Can anyone recommend decent hosting that has no "gotcha" fees?

Also, I want to get the domain name so that it is mine and no one elses. What happened before is that I subscribed with Dreamhost with 777 coupon and at the end of the 1rst year, they wanted to charge me 120 a year. I waited until the domain expired and someone in China snagged it and registered it (it was some obscure name, so it looks like they were monitoring it). I want to be the owner the site and not the company who's hosting it.

Can anyone suggest the best course of action for me? Sorry for the long post

I suggest going with GoDaddy for the domain name, and some other host for features that will fit your development needs. You can purchase them both through GoDaddy if you'd like because they keep the accounts seperate.

Actually, you could've just transferred that domain out of Dreamhost. I signed up for the same deal and after the year I transferred my domain over to registerfly and now am using stargate. As for hosting, HostPC is good. They run alot of specials so if you can wait.....

I tried! I tried! Oh boy, how I tried like crazy.

Dreamhost said that it was on "hold" with the registrar after my domain expired and that I'd need to wait for it to expire completely to get it. Well, we all know how that went.

Thanks op, just saved $2 on a renewal.

Anyone know if this works for renewals? I'm tired of going through the process only to find out that it's not valid on renewals. It's rare to find a coupon that works on .us domains.

Update: Wow, it really works on .us renewals.

rated:
i've never registered a .US with GoDaddy, so I had no idea. thanks for checking the promo code.

rated:
BTW, they seem to have stopped including this in the 2nd post here, but GoDaddy gets you 12% back through FatCash! I just renewed my .us domain for 5 years at $6 per year, less the 12% FC. It's the cheapest I have seen for .us renewals, and I've been happy with GoDaddy.

I also picked up a .info domain to play with for 99c (just one year). The discount code did not take an extra 25% off on that.

Oh, and the 12% is a special amount for their Mothers Day CashBack sale. What a great gift for mom -- her own domain!!! It's better than jewelry or flowers!!!

Right, after it has expired you are screwed, you cannot transfer it. If you had done so before it expired, it should have worked.

I got stuck that way with RegisterFly the first year I had my domain. One day, my email's not getting delivered and I noticed they had changed the MX to point to their own server instead of where I was sending it. I did not get any renewal notices from them despite their claim that they had sent them (and I was getting their advertising). I had no choice but to renew with them to unlock my domain, but I then transferred to GoDaddy later that year.

thanks op just bought 2 domains and saved $4

The 25% off code supposedly expires today. I highly recommend it if you've been trying to renew a domain because as I've already said here, my experience using GoDaddy codes for renewals (and especially .us renewals) has been complete failure until this one.

still working today. worked on a .org and .com renewal. hopefully will combine with the 12% FatCash!

is working for me. My 2 renewals and 1 new domain purchase price dropped down to $6.93/yr with this coupon code.

aero1 said: not a good deal. they charge you full price and since you can always get 20% off of go daddy right from GoDaddy itself it is pointless to use one of these CashBack programsDo you have a clue how these programs work? You can use coupons with them AND get the Cash Back. Although I will admit that my GoDaddy purchase has not shown up yet at FatCash. But given that I got 25% off, it's not the end of the world if it does not show up for some reason.

Unless you're talking about some other type of site to get 20% back.

rated:
Does anyone know how long it takes for GoDaddy to report FatCash? I made some orders weeks ago to take advantage of the 12% CashBack and no sign of any being reported. I know it can take several weeks for any of the stores...but just curious to hear what your waiting time has been.

That is true, that is why you have to transfer BEFORE it expires. You don't lose any time if you transfer before the expiration. Once it is on hold, good luck getting it back. The registrars used to courtesy hold it for you and let you renew it for normal cost, but then they realized how much they could make on holding them hostage and charging outrageous fees to "recover" your domain.. they probably sold it to the peeps in China.

I found pod59 and blu59 to work

pod59 = 10% off hosting
blu59 = 10% off everything else

confirmed 7/2/07

P.S. can we please take all the confirmed code and merge them into the first pages posting. It would be so much easier then going through the entire thread. That would be great if an admin can do it.

Nice job finding the codes guys.

Just put them in the quick summary. The OP should be responsible enough to pull them out of there and put them in the first post, but if he/she isn't.. they are right there on the first page.

So what's the trick to getting any of these to work? I've tried flushing cookies/files to create a new account and the discount is acknowledged on the checkout page . . . but shows up as "0".

Are they monitoring each cart with TRACE? Because I accidentally used CATALOG1 (a 20 dollar discount, not 20 percent, which is the minimum that I need) . . . and now none of these work.
