Well no. You see this is the reason I posted the Dry Loop option. Dry Loop allows you to have DSL without having the telephone service. You can then use VOIP service like SunRocket or Vonage or whatever else you like.
I already have a Verizon phone plan.
I'm hoping I can add dry loop DSL for $5 or $10.
You would only need dry loop if you do not plan on keeping your telephone service with Verizon.
The online test didn't show a dry loop plan.
The online chat CSR told me I'd have to call.
She gave me a number but wouldn't you know, my knee hit the power button before I could cut and paste it.

I got in on a $14.99 plan last summer that expires in August. I've got 2 questions,
1)Can I just sign up now and have them start the contract from Aug. to next Aug at $14.99
No.

2)Who owns the modem after my 1st year contract?
Well Verizon of course, however, in my case they told me not to bother returning the modem. I have no idea why.I'd like to dump this 6100 and get the Versalink 327w. I don't want to find out that Verizon wants the 6100 back after my contract is over. Do they usually ask for the modem back after the contract has been completed?

I am planning to setup a slingbox at home while subscribing this 768 kbps service at second home. Is this speed sufficient enough for watching streaming video from slingbox connection while browsing web?

Depending on how your got on your plan when signing up initially.
The last promotion was "FREE MODEM" with up to 8 filters. You only paid shipping and handling of $19~~. So modem is yours.

That's ridiculous!
If I had phone service from someone else, I could get dry loop DSL for $5.
If I already have Verizon's phone service, I have to pay $14.99 for DSL Internet.

For those who Verizon has told it's impossible to have DSL without phone service,
a POTS line consists of 4-wires. The plain old telephone uses the two of those wires. It is possible to switch between what uses which two wires. More often than not, the telephone uses the two inner wires. You can use your phone line for DSL WITHOUT phone service. You can use the phone line to connect/network anything throughout your house that will work over a wire of this gauge/composite.

Seems Dell is offering this with a $50 rebate, if you go thru Dell. FW only has $20 Cash Back going thru this thread link.

Great deal, OP!

Question: I live in an old apartment building (maybe built in the 1940s), and I've never used the telephone or cable wiring. Heck, I dont even know if it works!

Whats the set-up for this service like? Does Verizon send somebody out and wire your place up? Has anybody else had a situation where bad wiring in their apartment building caused them problems?

Thanks!

I did the first year at $14.99 but they would only give me $17.99 after that....
and they don't care if you say you'll go with someone else.

Yeah, when I did it a year ago they offered $100 rebate.

I had a 1year contract at 14.95 which is ending. The best I could get out of them was 19.99, they wouldnt give me the 14.95 even after being transfered to the cancellation dept. They were ready to drop it, they dont care at all. They say the 14.95 is only for NEW new customers. If anyone is able to talk their way into the 14.95 PM me I would like to know how. FYI - it was 21.95/month if i renewed online, so somehow I saved a couple bucks over the phone.

When you sign up for any Verizon service they will offer you an option of purchasing "wiring insurance" for your home. It used to be around a $1 per month, not sure how much it is now. If you buy that then the wiring inside your apartment will be their responsibility. I'm not sure if this insurance is cancellable. You'll probably have to ask. Another thing you'd want to ask when you call them is if Dry Loop DSL is available to you. As I mentioned before Dry Loop DSL means getting the DSL service without their telephone service. If it is available you can consider yourself lucky. Here in Los Angeles I was paying $30 a month after taxes and fees for the Verizon telephone service, plus whatever they were charging for DSL. The surcharge for Dry Loop appears to vary between $5 and $10 per month, depending on the area.
If you are worried about the wiring and you buy that insurance, then the installer when he or she comes out, is supposed to take care of it. I of course highly recommend that you ask Verizon all of this over the phone when, or before, you place your order just to confirm that what I'm saying in fact applies in your area.

Good Luck.
EG

I found this thread that mentions getting the $50 rebate but I can't figure out how to get it. When you go to the rebate form it only mentions the $100 rebate for 1.5M and 3M residential DSL service. This would be an excellent deal if I could get the $50 rebate.

I disagree - I think its an excellent price for a entry level high-speed modem. Most people don't need FIOS / cable speed.

Also, even though it was once available for $15, they required a phone line and quickly raised the price to $18 then $22

A lot of people still paying $10 month for dial-up. Like my in-laws.

Moved into Condo and starting with nothing. Was set to go with Century for cable, high speed internet, and phone line for 90.00 a month. Don't use tv a lot, won't get the movie channels which is fine with me. 3 meg for internet, and phone line (which I don't really need can use cell) is supposed to be free local and long distance. 1 yr. guaranteed price. Should I be checking something or someplace else? Need quick advice. I just called and cannot get Verizon in this area.

Well I don't know about Verizon being a "good company". It took me 4 months to cancel my dsl account. I would call the cancel line and they would just hang up on me. So I talked to billing four times and they could never get any one in the cancel deptartment. Finally someone in billing put a cancel on my account and eventrally my DSL was cancelled. it sucked to pay for DSL at a place I didn't live at for 3 monthes.
