Unless you are standing right next to the "tech" (and I use that term EXTREMELY loosely) you won't be able to see if he sends you on your way with a

double gasket (old gasket from oil filter still attached plus new gasket on oil filter),
over/under torqued oil pan bolt
stripped oil pan bolt
cross threaded oil pan bolt
over/under torqued oil filter

ucbedge said:Thanks for this informative video! Last time I took my car to one of these places (a Valvoline facility), they tampered with my spark plugs and wiring w/o asking me, which resulted in the car mis-firing so bad I had to take it to my *regular* mechanic to get it fixed. I threatened to sue them, so they ended up giving me my $$$ back. And this is just for an oil change - crazy stuff! When I got to one of these quick oil change places I tell what I don't want them to do (e.g. don't touch my air filter) and I stand there in the service bay and watch them the whole time.

With adult supervision its pretty hard for them to screw up a straight oil change unless they cross-thread the oil drain plug or filter.

Thanks OP for the coupon!

Edit: ninjarico, I posted at the same time. I agree its still possible for them to screw up, even with you staring at them but at least it eliminates many of the obvious problems (like forgetting to put oil in or put the drain plug back)

I had a friend of mine went in for oil change at Jiffy Lube and he decided to do one of those engine flushes (I guess you can say he got suckered into it). However, when they were done with it, he noticed the "Check Engine" light was on. The tech just told him that it should go away by driving for a few miles. When he got home and looked at the service paper he got from them, there was a quick scribble at the bottom of the sheet that said "Check Engine Light was on when customer dropped off the car" which was a Pure LIE!!

He right away got on the phone and went down to the place and spoke to the manager and the Tech (if you can call him that) who worked on the car and they refunded his money and apologized and gave him a coupon for a free oil change.

I do not know whether he used the free oil change, but he decided to do his own oil change from then on.

THANKS OP! Just got back from the Somerset location (NJ), great service at a fabulous price! This was my cars first oil change so I was not worried about pressure to get other work done (Brand new Pontiac G6, decent car, fabulous price, its such a bargain! ~$14,500 for a new 2007 "value leader")

--- with this deal --- you can use the free oil change as the engine flush --- drive 1k and have them change it again

I used to go to Jiffy Lube, but the prices in my area have doubled. They used to be cheap but not any more. Plus they always charged more for my 1997 ford explorer which I could'nt understand because it still takes 5 quarts of oil like most other cars and it has nothing to grease??? It is a scam. My husband takes his van to Monro Muffler for $17.99 and they do a 30 point inspection of your vehicle and brakes for that price which is great and you don't need an appontment either. The only problem now is my husbands van just blew up this morning so I guess no more oil changes for it! Oh well. Shop around for your oil changes because there is always a better deal out there.

Not to be an ass but do you see the glaring inconsistency with your post? (unless of course it blew up from an RPG or something and not engine failure)

Ouch, $44!!!

If you are going to pay for oil changes anyway, check coupons on the local auto dealership's webpages. I can get $15 oil changes at a local Chevy dealership if I choose. Unless you live in the boonies, check the websites of the many dealerships around you.

Oh, wait, do FWers use coupons?

momov said:Jiffy Lube sucks!I had a coupon so I went to one of these places for an oil change. There menu of services also listed 'radiator flush and fill' for a pretty good price. I asked quite specifically if they do a DRAIN and fill or a FLUSH and fill and the guy up front (manager?) assured me that it was a FLUSH and fill. While my car was still in the queue for the oil change I was talking to "mechanic" and I asked about the "flush and fill" -- How many times do you flush? What additive do you use? -- and he didn't know anything about flushing the radiator; all he knew was drain and fill. I got the oil change only and never went back.

Got my oil changed at a local Jiffy Lube 3 weeks ago during the "crazy tuesday" oil change deal. The "mechanic" (for lack of a better name) did not tighten the nut on the bottom of my oil pan all the way back on and was dripping oil for 2 weeks until my check oil idiot light came on... Just a heads up to make sure you check the work they perform..

Most shops that change oil will accept competitors' coupons upon request, so it pays to ask even if there's not a sign.

That video is incredible. I thought it was just going to be a small deal but the extent of the cheating and overbilling at so many JiffyLube locations has made a believer out of me. I will never go there. Although the reputation of car dealers is hardly stellar as far as repairs are concerned, at least they have a bit more at risk (like losing a customer who might otherwise come back for other repairs or even to buy a new vehicle) that might make them more reluctant to scam people. If JiffyLube scams you, they have nothing to lose except $30 bucks here and there from people who actually catch on and then don't come back.

It would be an idiot to go there after watching this investigation video. Thank for posting

--- every auto franchise out there that offers the $12.99 or $14.99 or $19.99 oil changes --- could possibly subject you to fraud --- these are blatant loss leaders

--- but just like every other deal in FW --- if you are smart --- you benefit from these deals ---

--- go there when they are not busy --- tell the guy --- Oil change ONLY --- and stand there and WATCH --- it is not that hard to do

Jiffy Lube's response shows --- they want you to watch --- from KNBC

"TO ease those concerns, Jiffy Lube says it's installing video cameras in 31 Los Angeles area stores so customers can make sure repairs are really getting done."

so AGAIN ----> thanks OP ---> if I needed two oil changes and there was a Jiffy Lube near me --- I would take the fifty dollar synthetic change times two --- GREAT FIND!

If a guy shoots you once hunting together on purpose, then later he claims he fixed sights on gun and he won't shoot ya now. do you go hunting with him again and walk in front of him, With him holding gun?

that's what I thought. same with "crooked once, etc..." well ya know how it goes. when someone or biz loses trust, they don't deserve to do business.

alert mods

yeah this is a old ploy by jiffy lube to get you to come in and 99 percent of the time, they will find something else wrong with your car. so expect to pay for more than a oil change when you leave there.

alert mods

Wow $44 for an oil change? Compares I pay $99 for 6 oil changes in my local Toyota dealer, I am pretty happy then. Plus, if they don't get it done with in 45 minutes, the next one is free. The dealer just changed its policy from 30 minutes to 45. So far I only had 1 free. The oil change includes 30 pt inspection, wipe and break fluid refill, etc.
