Same for me. I am on the < $12 limited basic plan, the DVR rents for $13 a month now but C0mcast requires you to be on a "digital tier" to rent one - which is TON more money per month than I pay now.

Of course, I am still undecided if I am going to get a S3 now or not - but for sure I am not getting the C0mcast DVR.

All the locals in HD are included with limited basic (and are available in clear QAM as well).

Of course. That's why I bought the S3s to record the local HD channels.

Please clarify.. So the HD locals come from Comcast, not through an OTA antenna? If so, I might look into that as well! I may not even need the cablecards afterall...

Yes, through Comcast. OTA does not work well for my location. You still need CableCards to get TiVo guide data. In my area, 1st card is free, and 2nd card is $1.50.

I don't know why *YOU* couldn't buy it from them, but anyone else could

Just kidding, they are an authorized source so the rebate will be good, they have it for $599.99 and free shipping, tax only in MI and FL (I think, you should double check).

I placed my order with them yesterday, and they shipped it out immediately from Michigan and I'll have it today. That's with the free ground shipping option! Makes Circuit City's customer service look terrible in comparison.

Yeah, even if CC pricematched, I'd still get hit with Tax and the added aggravation of actually going to CC and speaking to someone there. I'll buy mine from TivoCommunity now. Thanks

In most areas, yes this is true - C0mcast provides the locals in clear QAM as part of the most basic package. The series has a "bug" in it - you can't map QAM channels to guide data. The guide data in my area may say the NBC affiliate is on channel 112, but there is no way to tell the s3 that 112 = 93.4 on clear QAM. No way, except to get and rent cablecards. If you put up an OTA then you can get quide data for the HD channels, but not from the clear QAM without the cablecards. Now that the price is "reasonable" it does life a huge roadblock to getting an S3 - C0mcast used to charge $5 each per month to rent them.

Thanks for the info. I have ordered Comcast basic for now. They will be installing on Saturday. When I move in about a month, I will upgrade to full digital with CableCards. The local HD stations will be good enough for the time being.

Without cablecards on a series 3 you can't get season passes for shows off of clear QAM cable. You CAN record shows, but only in manual mode (e.g. channel 93-4 at 7:00pm on Tuesday for 1 hour). Once you get cablecards, then you can do recordings as normal. Comcast should allow you to have cablecards now on limited basic, the first one (here) is free and the 2nd one is < $2 per month IIRC.
