JohnGreen said:hawaiian2002 said:Why is TiVo so popular when I can get a similar setup from my cable or satellite company for less? The cable company does not charge anything upfront and charges $10 per month for the 8300HD. Dish is $50 upfront after rebate and $6 per month for the vip622. Both are dual tuner HD dvrs. Capacity may be less on the 8300HD.TiVo's services are far superior to the standard dvr (unless you have Cox cable- soon you'll be able to rent Series 3 tivos).
Some people like the extras like the music and pictures options, tivo2go (download/archive and burn shows to dvd), unbox, share home videos with family/friends, the ability to record and watch shows via the internet, wishlists, etc. A TiVo is easier to use than a standard dvr, and I find the fast forward/rewind/pause/play is smoother and more exact on TiVo.
As far as i know, TIVO2GO is not available on the Series 3. |

On costco website it says not compatible with satellite.
i.e. "- Note: Not compatible with satellite. Also supports basic cable (non-HD) and analog antenna (non-HD)"
so it will not work with DISH or directtv? Wanted to confirm before i jump in. |

ok, so two last questions...is the eSATA connection usable for a hard drive upgrade, or do i have to crack open the case and install a new (internal) SATA drive myself? also, what are the USB ports on the back used for?
i'm *this* close to convincing myself Tivo3 is the way to go after YEARS of loyal ReplayTV use...if it had "multi-room viewing" out of the box, it'd be a no brainer...i've heard the "we're working on it" line before...anyone remember the ReplayTV 45xx and 5xxx compatability issue? i really don't want to get burned by buying 2 x Tivo3 and have them never be able to talk to each other.

Both will be available in the future, according to the FAQ.
Using the TiVo with satellite in the future, however, will not be supported. |

UltiPlayer said:Seems like a great deal for a TiVo 3.
I currently have a TiVo 1 & 2 w/ lifetime service, & a 2nd TiVo 2 paying $7/mo for it. Want to shift to the HD DVR's, otherwise I'd just stay w/ my current setup because TiVo rocks.
However, I'm also wondering if TiVo 3 is worth the considerable cost difference compared to my TWC HD8300 DVR w/ 2 tuners built in. .
I don't know what the price is on your two HD DVR units, but since you already have multiple tivos, couldn't you use MSD on the series 3 as well? I think the current limit for the number of Tivos you can run with the multi service discount is 4? Am I mistaken about this? |

Will the TiVoToGo™ feature and Multi-Room Viewing be available on the Series3 HD? As always, TiVo's goal is to make available as many of the Emmy® award-winning TiVo service features as possible on all of our hardware platforms. The TiVo Series3 HD DVR is designed to enable additional service features to be activited by a software download when additional features become available. We expect that a version of TiVoToGo and Multi-Room Viewing features will be made available for the TiVo Series3 HD DVR in the future. Because TiVo worked directly with Cable Television Laboratories Inc. (CableLabs®) to enable the recording of digital standard definition and high definition channels with the TiVo Series3 HD box, this product has unique requirements with respect to such digital channels. TiVo is working with CableLabs and our own engineering team on enabling Multi-Room Viewing and other technologies relating to moving certain digital content around the home environment. |

Sturmie said:ok, so two last questions...is the eSATA connection usable for a hard drive upgrade, or do i have to crack open the case and install a new (internal) SATA drive myself? also, what are the USB ports on the back used for? Yes, you can upgrade the TiVo by adding an external SATA hard drive.
Equipment 1. TiVo Series3 (and remote, duh) running 8.1.1 software 2. eSATA enclosure + drive with eSATA cable or SATA drive with external power source and eSATA to SATA cable
Directions This is a fairly easy procedure, so we'll run through the steps.
1. Power down your TiVo.
2. Connect your eSATA gear. If you're going to use a straight up bare drive (which we don't suggest), make sure you've got some kind of power source for it.
3. Turn on your drive, and while you're powering on your TiVo, hold down the pause button. Make sure you keep your remote aimed at your TiVo the whole time!
4. Keep holding it. The front panel lights turn off, then the orange LED will light up. Now you can go ahead and let go of the pause button; then punch in "62" on your remote. (Apparently this maneuver is called "kickstart 62".)
5. You'll then reboot, and some bidness starts happening.
6. Boom, now you've got more space!

This ought to be good. I've never heard of such a deal.
Actually, there is a deal for TiVo software to be downloaded to generic Comcast DVRs for a small additional monthly charge. |

I would wait two weeks to take advantage of this offer? Why?
American Express launches their Wishlist on June 3. I am told they will again offer 25% off Amazon.com coupons (up to $150 value). The week of June 3, you should be able to get the Series3 from Amazon.com for $455 before the rebate, and $255 after the TiVo rebate. |

Yep it was announced a long time ago. Stil on schedule.
Here is something from the last TiVo confrence call in March:
Operator
Thank you. (Operator Instructions). Our first question today is from Daniel Ernst from Hudson Square Research.
Daniel Ernst - Hudson Square Research
Good evening. Thanks for taking the call. For my one question, you indicated that your first market with Comcast would be rolling out in the very near future. Can you give us a sense of how many markets Comcast plans to roll out over the course of fiscal '08? Thank you.
Tom Rogers
Hi, this is Tom. Comcast has made clear that they'll start with an initial market, which is a large market they have identified. It's a sizeable market and they'll continue to roll in additional markets from there.
As I said, the engineering trials were successfully completed in January and the tech trials started on time in February, and if things continue to run as we expect them to, there is every expectation that Comcast will be able to launch in that initial sizeable market some time this spring. Beyond that, we aren’t able to announce what Comcast's roll plans are, but over the course of the year the expectation is that much of the Comcast base will have TiVo available to it." |

Comcast and TiVo demonstrate integrated DVR service at CES
As mentioned, Cox is also on board.
Unfortunately, I don't think I can wait until Cox gets around to it.. if the Series 3 hits $299, I'm buying. |

Dont hold your breath. CableLabs has been pretty much blocking so much stuff like this i wouldnt hold much hope that they will give TiVo a thumbs up on these technologies. I suggest reading AVSForums which has plenty of info on Cablelabs and what theyve been up to in this respect.
Microsoft was "Working" on Vista but that took over 5 years to be released and with reduced functionality. Dont mix Marketing Spin and Standard Comprehension. For now this is vaporware! |
