I was shopping for a 2007 Volvo XC90 and came across this deal. It's definitely hot and we're going to pull the trigger on this one. NOTE: No, I do not work at a car dealership or work for Volvo.
Volvo Overseas Delivery Program (more info here) The regular OSD deal is: Purchase a Volvo (normally 8% below MSRP), get a free trip (airfare for 2 on SAS, 1 night hotel @ Radisson SAS) to Sweden to pick up your car, use it to drive in Europe and it's shipped back free to the dealership where you bought it. That's just OK, right? (details of what you get
What's makes this deal HOT is the fact that they are trying to get rid of the 2007 models to make way for the 2008s. So, for the XC90, they are including the Climate Package ($675), Premium Package ($2995) and Metallic Paint ($475) AT NO EXTRA COST! That's a total $4145 in savings.
For the 2007 XC90 (osd price list for 2008), it will be slightly cheaper than the 2008 price list. For 3.2 AWD, it's $35,135 before the usual taxes/fees. BUT that comes with the extra packages mentioned above PLUS a trip to Sweden (Gothenburg). Crazy, but some people have just stayed 1 day to sign the papers and flew back afterwards.
BTW, I've shopped around a ton of dealers in and out of state, via CarzDirect, via Costco, and this has to be the best deal so far.
The only downside that I can see is that it will take 8 - 12 weeks after your trip to have your car. But we can wait!
If you're looking for a Volvo at massive discount and have sometime to travel, check it out!
Update - 6/11/07 We found a local dealer that offered to do this for $1000 less than the "fixed" OSD price. So for a 2007 XC90 AWD in a titanium metallic paint with climate, premium and versatility packages, normally $37,385, we got it for $36,385 before taxes/fees!
So we are going to Sweden next month... Woo hoo!!!
Update - 7/21/07 We just completed our European trip to pick up the XC90. Before heading to Volvo's headqueaters in Gothenburg, Sweden, we were able to kick it in Paris for 5 days. We did, however, needed to pay for the airfare from Paris to Gothenburg, Sweden, but it was only $341/pp.
Doesn't BMW have a similar program as well? I wonder what their overseas delivery program includes.

A lot of European car mfrs have this program, because it's a win/win for everybody's finances. They've been doing this for years.

Yes BMW and Mercedes also have similar programs too. You can go the www.bmwusa.com and search for European delivery option. The Plus point, You can drive your new Beamer on AutoBahn and then retrun it to the factory and they will deliver it to the BMW dealership nearest to you.
I wonder someday I will get my 6-series and drive it on AutoBahn!!
I have a video of the XC90 being crash tested. They put it on a sled and roll it at 45 mph. The thing rolls 9 times and is remarkably intact. In fact, the windowshield didn't even break until the 5th roll.
This is an awesomely safe SUV. Worth it at twice the price.

Sounds like a good deal, but here's a couple of things to consider:
Invoice and Edmunds.com TMV run about 5-6% below MSRP compared to the 8% discount. The depreciation from a 2007 model plus the added 2-3 months of depreciation on the shipment make that part of the equation even less desireable.
Free vacation and added bonus features at no cost are hot IF you need/want them.
OP if you havent pulled the trigger on this yet, id suggest you do a google search for a volvo forum to make sure youre getting the best deal. I am doing this now with a BMW 335i and im getting the car for 1000 dollars over invoice which is a total savings of just under 18% of the US MSRP. Now, BMW doesnt give you a free flight or hotel which is going to cost me about ~750 plus hotel (im going in the off season). You do get a 2 for 1 flight on Lufthansa. You also get free insurance for 30 days.

it's a typical thing for euro car (if you ever buy euro car)... basically you order it, they make it, and they sent you to europe to pick it up, you can drive around there with your car, and drop it off at one of their place (all over europe), fly back and they'll ship your car to the US (when you have the car built make sure to select the wheel on the side that you'll use, which is opposite of the side in europe).
what you're saving is car rental cost, in this case you're saving a bit more on the upgrades, it's like they're throwing upgrades in for free. It's good if you need a car and also going on vacation at europe, other wise it sounds good but doesn't apply for alot of people.

You aren't ever going to get a brand new loaded BMW X5, Mercedes ML, Lexus RX, Acura MDX, or even a BMW X3 for $35,000. While the XC90 may not be the sportiest or the most luxurious SUV in this segment its still one of my favorites nonetheless. Its very stylish, comfortable, and extremely safe.
You'd be a fool not to look at this deal if you are shopping for a luxury SUV.

volvo makes decent car, no doubt, but so does alot of other company, cars these days are very high standard compare to the old days, the differences between brands are just personal choice, if a machine is to test their performance, at equally price their rating is gonna be pretty similar.
again this deal applies when
1) you need an new SUV 2) you like euro car (this particular car) 3) you wanna go for a vacation
Yep..several weeks ago some of my friends told me they are doing this. They love the convertible. They'll be staying for a bit longer than the freebie 1 night though. Good deal!

I wonder someday I will get my 6-series and drive it on AutoBahn!!Picked up a 1986 VW Jetta GLi in Nov. 1985 at the factory in Wolfsburg. Cranked it out to 120 mph on the German Autobahn; not too bad for a 1.8L / 102HP 4 banger. Big Mercs and Bimmers passed me as if I was going 35 mph.
Spent 16 days traveling by train and car. Drove the car for 12 days and ~2000 miles. The car entered it's 10th country when it was offloaded at the Port of Wilmington, DE. How many US people can say that they drove their car in Lichtenstein?
Didn't get any freebie airfare or hotel stay, but still did the trip on the cheap. Anybody remember People Express?

WOW?? really?? so you mean that if i DONT need a new European styled SUV and i dont want to go on vaction - i shouldnt go to Sweden to buy one???
(when you have the car built make sure to select the wheel on the side that you'll use, which is opposite of the side in europe).
I am pretty sure German's drive on the same side as Americans. It is really just Britain and some of her previous colonies or highly influenced countries that drive on the right.
Park it at the grocery stores and sleep in it! Like the Pontiac Aztek commercials! Car already helps pay for itself.

The deal on European delivery has been around for years but what makes this post different is the OP explains that several options ($4k worth) are now thrown in as well. Although I looked at the XC90 when it came out, I would not buy one now based on the track record it has had. It seems on the Volvo forums, "XC90 & lemon law" are used in the same paragraphs more than I have ever seen on car forums! While many claim they have had severe transmission problems, an overwhelming amount of people agree that "water in the doors" is an accepted issue on the XC90 and abnormal tire wear (severe cupping) is normal.
While you can find horror stories about any car from Lexus to Kia, the Volvo XC90 seems to be ranking up near the top from current owners. I'd do some real research on the new ones as the free $4k in extras might just be the dealers way of unloading a model thats got real issues.

We purchased European delivery in 1992 without going to Sweden. Someone else took delivery arranged by dealer and shipped here. If you look around you can get same bargain here.

Great thread! Thanks OP. I am going to be an expat in Europe for 2 years starting in August, so wondering if I can buy my car, use it in Europe, and have it shipped over 2 years later? Will check out bimmerfest.com also.
