Low-cost SunPass device on sale June 29 SunPass transponders, normally sold at $25, will be available for $8.36 on June 29. The passes will be sold between noon and 5 p.m. in the lobby of Commissioner Sally A. Heyman's district office at 1100 NE 163rd St. (North Miami Beach)
Commissioner Heyman and Miami-Dade Expressway Authority teamed up to offer the lower price as part of the MDX's outreach activities as they open new extensions and improvements of State Road 836.
There will be a limited number of passes at the site and only cash will be accepted. Each person is limited to purchasing two passes.
Anyone interested in knowing more about the SunPass promotion should call the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority at 305-637-3277.
This is probably because FL is looking into replacing the current, bulky transponders with the new stickers that do the same thing. the stickers are permanent, however, where the transponders can be removed.
Too bad it's in Miami - I have two cars, and while it's not difficult to take the one transponder out of one car and put it in another (I have one of the newer gray ones with suction cups), I seem to forget to do that a lot.
Interestingly, the website http://www.sunpass.com/purchase.cfm says the following:
"We're sorry, the special sale is now over as this MDX promotion was limited to the first 13,000 transponders purchased."
How can they be sold out on Jun 22, when the sale doesn't start until Jun 29?

I live in Orlando too (well Oviedo to be precise) and I have been holding off buying one for my wife's car as she rarely uses the toll roads. The fact that you get no credit for the $25 you have to lay out for these things is ridiculous. I would have jumped all over this, but I guess the Miami folks get to benefit, and we don't

There are no stickers that can do what a transponder does. The transponder is an active device that listens to the request from the booth. Upon receiving that request, it fully powers up and transmits it's unique code. A short time after, it resumes a low power sleep mode until the next tool approaches.
I think you must be confusing these stickers with simple barcodes that get you through your neighborhood guard gate.

Do you not get discounts on the toll in Orlando? Here in Tampa we usually get .25 off, and I think there's a couple of ones where you get .50 off. If you drive the toll roads a lot, it's worth it between that and not having to remember change every day.

it's a sticker with a miniature transponder in it, so it is a sticker that can do what a transponder does.

I don't think many of us could call up the mayor of our city and tell him to have discounted sunpasses ready for us next week! NMB is a "unique" group.

I would have jumped all over this, but I guess the Miami folks get to benefit, and we don't And the best part of the $25 charge is the fact that for years, the Expressway Authority gave them away for free in Central Florida. Luckily we got two at that time (when they were the old bumper ones), then when they changed to new style that are universal, they just sent us new ones for free.

edita: spellingAlthough the article referenced by robotprom, seems to indicate you still can use the old ones, the stickers will just be an alternative (for now anyway). I wonder if you could just stick it to a piece of plastic and lay it on the dash instead of permanantly affixing to the windshield?

to paraphrase a famous Florida bumper sticker: we don't care how you do it up north.

There are some tolls where you get 25c or 50c reductions, but I think those are on the turnpike, where the fee is already something like $2.00. The ones in and around Orlando do not have the discount

Since we have some sunpass users here, have any of you heard of the transponders being used for speed enfocement? I have a friend who is a TSA agent and, while not directly involved in Sunpass operations, he says they are beginning to test for speeders using the system. By recording your time from reader to reader, an average speed can be calculated. He says the only missing piece is to snap a photo of you driving so it will hold up in court if you contest it! That is why the cameras are now being installed pointing at you (instead of just at the rear license plate) at the booths. Scary stuff.

i went today to the commissioner's office around 2pm. what a sweaty hot day! to my surprise, i see this line of 50 people trailing out the door. i wasn't expecting this event to be so popular. it was hard to find parking in that little lot, so i just parked on the side of the road like a few people did. the lane was moving at a fair speed and i think i was there for maybe 15 to 20 minutes (including transaction time). i went by myself and the crowd was friendly. there were definitely officers around to keep watch. if you did not have cash on you or could not wait in line, you can opt for a voucher which you can get in the next door over. there's a lady sitting by the door with a clipboard and she'll take down your name and give you a voucher in which you include with a check or money order of $8.36 + $0.41 stamp to mail to MDX who will then mail you a sunpass. one voucher can claim up to 2 sunpasses, and you can still pay the $8.36 price tag for each sunpass. if i wasn't already in line and stubborn in nature, i would've just gotten a voucher and left (it's the same thing, only $0.41 more for the stamp and 2-3 weeks for delivery to your home). yup. oh yah, and they don't take down your name if you pay in cash in person, at least that's what happened when i was there. you just go in, tell them how many you want, pay up, the lady writes you a receipt and you get your change and number of transponder. very simple. the whole transaction only takes like one minute.
p.s. seeing how only the june 29 date seem to be the most advertised date around, i would expect lines of people. be wary!

NJ had done that in the early days of EZ Pass but was ordered to stop cause I don't think it was holding up in court.

so, was it the sticker or transponder version? would be much better if it was the transponder so you could move it from car to car

They are the Transponder version, not sticker. However, i got there today at 12:30pm and the lines was horrible. it was about 300 ppl in an infinite line. You could get the voucher only if you have gotten a ticket and still waiting in line. So, no luck for me. I was told this was advertised on the newspaper so if you really want it...Try to get there before the door opens. good luck.
