Based on this AT&T website, it said AT&T Wi-Fi Basic is FREE to AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet Pro or Elite and AT&T FastAccess® DSL Xtreme or Xtreme 6.0 customers, no ordering required.
Usually, the setting for places like McDonald's is SSID: attwifi
In most cases, there is no need to install any special AT&T Wifi software unless you want the locator database on your machine. Here are the steps I got to get it to work at a local McDonalds.
* I have Pro service (2.5 to 3.0 MB down) - I did not register on the website beforhand
Go to the WiFi location Turn on your wireless scanner on your device Connect to 'attwifi' Open your web browser to any webpage -- it will auto redirect to a login page Click the AT&T Wifi link on the page (at McDonalds it is near the bottom center) Enter your login and password (this is your primary email address with SBC -- it is also listed on most bills and password -- it is the same login and password used on Yahoo Mail for example for your primary address -- I am not sure if secondary addresses work). You will be validated and sent to some sort of start page. Just go to any other URL to start browsing.
VPNs appear to work, but there are some blocked ports in the fine print.

wifi was for 1.99 a month for all att dsl subcriber so you could go to barnes and noble and many other places and use the hotspot to conect to the internet
now its free starting july first for pro and elite subscriber... wifi is also available at McDonalds too
Fine print in the second link: *Subscription service is currently not available in Connecticut. AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet U-verse Enabled customers receive AT&T Wi-Fi Basic Subscriptions free of charge.

Yeah, good deal since I've been paying that $1.99 per month.
It is a great option for those having ATT/SBC DSL. Almost all McDonalds, Barnes & Nobles, UPS Stores, Airports (e.g both Chicagoland), some Hospitals!, most Wyndham/Holiday Inn and a bunch of other Hotel chains and even Cosi restaurants offer this!
Driving around Chicagoland, I have never been more than a few minutes away from a free HotSpot Good speeds too

so if you have dsl pro or elite..call att and get the wifi for free
I assume this does not include Premium Roaming Location? (meaning extra charge)
And looks like any location other than McDonald and Barnes & Noble are Premium Roaming Location.
free basic wifi... barnes and noble McDonalds a a lot of more locations... www.attwifi.com has a locator for free wifi

HHmm..I called ATT today, and the rep said there is no promotion on the Wifi. He tried looking in his system, and he doesn't see the thing about free wifi for dsl subscribers.

- there is not much UPS Stores around places like California and New York (using couple big states as example) that offer wifi. If they do, it is likely Premium roaming location which I understand you need to pay extra. - Again if you do a search in those couple big states, most airports only have "Premium roaming" which is not free. - almost all Inn/hotels are Premium roaming, again, not free from what I understand. - for hospital, which is not a lot of them have this and how often you go to hospital to go online? - for all other location, if you check, most if not all of them are Premium roaming.
